hey harry…when you say it’s too bad the spirit of the journal was crushed by the spirit of the sentinel, i can only conclude that you weren’t reading either paper from, say, 1985 until the two merged 10 years later. i worked at the sentinel, and during that decade it wasn’t “the hearst sentinel” at all. we were the redheaded stepchild of the journal company — underpaid, understaffed and underappreciated. but we were proud, we were scrappy, we covered the goddamn news, and we regularly kicked the journal’s ass.

haven’t seen the article in question and don’t particularly care to, but a former Journal photographer who later taught at Indiana U. was one of the two guiding lights of my misspent career in tv news, so I felt compelled to run my mouth to Romenesko on that topic. let’s see if it gets onto the page.

hmmm, two journalistic role models, one in Milwaukee and the other in Wichita. maybe that’s why I never made the big time.

too, too bad that, according to murphy, the spirit of the journal was crushed by the spirit of the sentinel — the hearst sentinel.

folks, back in the day, hearst was the rupert murdoch of his day.

i bet he smiles in hell when he thinks of that.
