Like I wrote, step 2 can be a pain, but it isn't too bad and it is absolutely necessary because in order to be a good peer in a point-to-point (p2p) network, one has to be able to share parts of the files they download with other peers that need those parts. Wikipedia.org has a great primer on bitTorrent and that would be a great place to start for an overview of how it works.
