Great for Shelby Stouder!!! I raised my hand three times to ask questions when Christopher Guest was here last week. And then the newspaper used one of my questions (and his reply) in the paper the next day.

Say - regarding Dr Prokopowicz's presentation about his book Did Lincoln Own Slaves? - which will be in Grosse Pointe tonight -

Shelby and I attended Gerry's 'fireside chat' at Mitchell's Sunday evening, and it was very pleasant. Many familiar faces from the Lincoln Museum were there, along with many other people. The setting was comfortable and informal, with easy chairs and sofas set around a fireplace, which had been nicely stoked (presumeably NIPSCO has something to do with the always-perfect fire there, but we digress!).

As Gerry warmed to his subject, we all listened intently, and Shelby leaned over and whispered that she had a question to ask, and wondered if that would be OK. I whispered back that he would take questions at the end, and that she could indeed ask her question then.

When Dr Prokopowicz finished his talk, Shelby sat quietly - and I wondered if her question had been answered during the lecture, or whether the thought of asking a question suddenly didn't seem like a good idea to her.....but the apple doesn't fall far from the tree - and soon enough her hand went up. (I was braced for anything!)....and she asked whether the Todds and the Lincolns disagreed about slavery! (She asked a great question! Woo Hoo!!) - which Gerry thanked her for, before delivering a humorous and informative answer.

Grandma Stouder asked us to buy her a copy of the book, so we were going to buy two - but I made the tactical error of spending the 10 minutes we had before the lecture looking at other books, rather than snapping up Gerry's book from the impressive pile of them that the store had......and they sold out!! But I did manage to get the last copy - so Grandma Stouder will be happy.

It was a very pleasant outing, and Shelby and I were back home again just before 8. (she also selected a book aimed at younger readers about Barack Obama - which I found to be quite good, too)
