I am saddened to hear of this loss. And expanding on what Brian sais, I always thought of him as a guy who made me realize and remember that Katrina's damage was still an issue that needs to be dealt with in an ongoing way. And if we forgot he reminded us.

Note his wife's question on the blog about who is our lawyer? I know my husband would feel the same confusion about paperwork, wills, insurance, and even daily bills, and have started work on a kind of guide for him just in case.

Wow. I only knew him in the virtual sense and I feel a loss. I'm so very, very so to those of you who knew him for real.

I can only repeat what Dorothy and Danny said. How many years has it been? - two or three? (or 4 or 5?) - thinking back, he gave us a connection to the slow-motion catastrophe in New Orleans....and thinking further back, he had just bought a house there, when Katrina started heading for the neighborhood- and he never changed the plan

It is funny how this internet thing works; most people swim along in the vastness of it, and naturally end up frequenting only a small part, netted together with others that share this or that patch of it.

And Ashley's death is felt where it would not have been, and the effect is real and not 'virtual'; and (as always, with death) it is deeply surprising

Yeah, I have a house full of people and when we got back from the airpost last night and I logged on, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I too thought I'd get to meet Ashley one day and have a pop with him. Damn.

I gasped out loud when I opened nancynall.com this morning - such awful news! My sincere condolences to Ashley's family, and to you, Nancy. I know he was a true and good friend. This place won't be the same without him.

What a kick in the nuts. I've read and commented on his blog for a long time. I'd really come to like the cranky so and so. We need more people like him. People who are filled with genuine outrage. I, for one, will really miss him. I wish I had had the opportunity to have a cigar and a few pops with him.

I am stunned at this terrible news. We will miss him but I'm sure you will miss him more. My condolences on the loss of your friend.

I was too shy to tease him about rockin' the llama's ass. Now I wish I had.
