Is it just me? I have YET to meet a supporter who thinks Obama's The Messiah. Methinks they are a media creation, just like the Hill/Bill disunity meme or an operation chaos idea like the PUMAs.

Brian, I like your rewrite and Gustav's new name. Instead of the OT, though, maybe it's an alternate ending to the Left Behind books?

Brian, please....stop.

Do you honestly think our dear departed Ashley would think it's a fair exchange to endanger the lives of his NOLA brothers and sisters (again!) just to reduce McCain's newsworthiness, and remind people of hell?? I know Ashley only from his posts, here and on his blog, but I think not. He's spinning in his grave at your notion. And, it was three years ago, not two.

Edit - And it's not that the press says Barack thinks of himself as a messiah so much, it's his supporters who do. But I do think he thoroughly enjoys his rockstar status. Just sayin'...

Otherwise, I enjoy your posts.

Well, with all due respect and concern for all who find themselves in the path of the still-growing gulf storm, I cannot help but smile at the prospect of the rough justice that may well come to pass.

Tonight Obama will give a barn-burner of a speech to many tens of thousands of fired-up Americans, accepting the Democratic party's nomination, and commemorating Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" address....

and then our right-wing windbags will go into a full gale, spending the next days snarling that "he thinks he's God!! he thinks he's a Messiah!" -

and THEN - almost as if taken from the pages of the Old Testament - the winds will blow and the sea will become angry and Gustav might well blow the Republican convention coverage off of the front page (or at least below the fold!); or as the fellow on msnbc puts it - we could go into "split screen" mode!

Just what McCain (et al) wants; second banana status, plus graphic reminders of how "heck-of-a" horrible job the Republican-lead US government did, when the chips were down in New Orleans two summers ago.

And if THAT comes to pass, I will always think that Gustav's middle name is Ashley

But, to be fair, 44 probably really did seem young to Hyde by the time he was confronted by that "indiscretion."

Wending back to matters of politicians' hypocrisy, I remember the late Henry Hyde, of the Clinton impeachment House, who, when confronted with photographic evidence of his own earlier extramarital affair (courtesy of Larry Flynt), described it as "a youthful indiscretion." It had happened when he was 44.

I'm truly delighted that a major party has nominated an African-American as their candidate for President of the United States. Of course, the Democratic Party didn’t even admit black delegates to their conventions until 1936, while the GOP did so starting in 1888, actually putting a vote for Frederick Douglass on the record in that year.

As with the Chicago Cubs, one can argue they've been coasting on that preeminence for a century too long, and need to take step number two. Colin Powell in 2000 would have been great, but Alma said no.

Gasman, when you hear of my death, you can just pee in Lake Michigan to reach the same effect (actually, the game plan is ashes into the St. Joseph River, but it all ends up in the Big Sea Water). But i'm sure the Cheney family plot can use the nitrites in the sod -- gives you really, really green grass.

MichaelG,
ABQ is not much better because Sandia National Lab is there. It is the biggest single repository for nuclear warheads in our arsenal. Feds are as thick as fleas down here. Foreigners abound in Los Alamos, even ones from countries that not that long ago were the enemy. It is, however, kind of surreal to see many Russian born scientists here. As someone who came of age during the cold war, Russians would have been largely banned from Los Alamos. Now they work here freely.

I may be too paranoid, but I have been genuinely afraid to speak my mind here until very recently. My wife told one of the long time Los Alamos residents of my fears and this old timer said that I was right to be circumspect.

Canadian citizen Maher Arar was deported by the U.S. government, not to Canada - from whence his passport was issued, but to Syria, his country of birth. While in Syria he was tortured. This was but one instance in this pissing contest that Cheney has waged with Canada because Canada had the audacity to not do his bidding. Just one of the many reasons I am extremely motivated to see a Democrat in the Whitehouse.

I'll wish him a long and healthy life, but when he finally shakes this mortal coil, I fully intend to piss on Cheney's grave.
