My fellowship director referred to upmarket business attire as “power clothes.” He always wears power clothes, but of late, I have an allergy to them. I have a meeting with two editors in about an hour, normally a power-clothes occasion. They proposed we meet at a coffeehouse about two miles from my house.
“In summer, I try to enforce a no-drive zone for errands like this,” I said. “How would you feel if I wore shorts and arrived a little sweaty, but fully alert? I’ll be riding my bicycle.”
“I think that’s admirable,” she said.
Admirable! I think I’m onto something. T-shirts = the new power clothes.
So I have to get ready. In the meantime, Slate explains why in the battle between condoms and abstinence as a means to control STD transmission, the condoms are winning. (Hint: Because they work better.) However, what I noticed about it was that the anti-condom forces, who continue to insist, in the face of all the evidence, that you gents’d be better-off wrapping up in a few inches of mosquito net for all the good they do, is led by my ex-congressman.
Last month, biological warfare on Colombia, this month, science denial. Par for the course.
Back later. Make merry in the comments, if you wish.

I wish t-shirts worked as power dressing here. Unfortunately, I mostly live in dull but reasonably well mad Jones New York pantsuits. Two black jackets, three pairs of black pants, one tan jacket, one sage green jacket, many camisoles. Rotate elements as needed, add small tasteful accessories. Not that I’m a wild woman the rest of the time, but my work clothes are very boring.

Speaking of biking, anyone watching the Tour? I realize that it is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really dig this event.
It’s a shame that some of the top riders are out this year, especially the ones that got injured yesterday, but I can hardly wait until they get to the mountain stages. It would have been great to have seen Basso, Valverde and Ullrich in those stages. Oh, Vinikourov too. That dude is a real badass!
I don’t care who wins (whatever team or nationality does not matter to me), but I am very interested to see how the race strategy plays out between Phonak and Discovery and Landis and Hincapie, two former teamates.
Pedal til you puke! Cheers.

Danny my daughter got to see part of the Tour live in France 5 years ago when she visited a pen pal. She was captivated by it and now follows the events closely. You know Hincapie is a resident of Greenville, right? He’s been front page news the last day or two! Especially last week when he had the first yellow jersey of the Tour. I read this morning that he lost weight to make himself “more Lance-like” (my words, not his). He is 6’3″ and weighs around 159 or 160!!

I know, that is thin. It is a real fine balanicing act too, becasue during the tour, these guys lose even more weight despite 8000 calorie days.
Two months ago, Bicycling magazine had a feature on the favorite local riding routes of the pros. The first one featured was Floyd Landis who now lives real close to me and his route was one I am familiar with. Then, I turn the page and George’s route was in Greenville (basically from around Table Rock to Greenville and back) another area with which I am very familiar. Small world!

So – more proof that those people who come across as jerks on reality shows such as Survivor really are the jerks that they seem to be….this article starts out as black humor – but then there is a genuinely dark, foreboding reference about ‘family violence’ toward the end

an excerpt –
ATLANTA – A winner of the popular reality show “Survivor? was arrested Wednesday after allegedly shooting a puppy with an arrow. Brian Heidik, 38, was released on bond after being charged with battery and cruelty to animals.
and
“At about 3 a.m., his wife called to report that he was outside and that he had shot a puppy that was on his property with an arrow and planned to shoot another one,? Copeland said.
Maybe he was doing his Burt-Reynolds-in-Deliverance he-man schtick, eh?
