In an echo of Sherri’s post at the end of the last thread, it looks like Il Douche is finally having the big meltdown people were anticipating a year ago. He’s also trying to weasel out of the debates without looking like a big coward. I remember when Ross Perot started delaminating in ’92. I guess it’s gonna be like that. Only yuge.

Hooray about flossing! I rarely do it because my I-needed-braces-in-my-youth-but-didn’t-get-them teeth are very close together resulting in broken or stuck floss. So, I tend to avoid flossing and now I can avoid guilt about it!

First it’s the Fire Marshals being against him, next thing you know he’ll claim that Hillary’s against him.

Mr. Khan was supposed to get under Trump’s skin and he did that 200%. Trump has slammed to many people and gotten away with it but the Khan’s have such a solemn dignity that nothing Trump says can touch them. Any sane person would have changed the subject and moved on.

Today we make a mad dash back to Detroit to vote in the primary. Weather looks good but there’s so much construction around Detroit that getting into town can be difficult.

Oh let’s please change the subject from big chunks of food stuck in teeth if you don’t mind! For some reason that is making me kind of queasy when I read those words.

I’m auditioning for a play in three weeks. There are just three parts – husband, wife and their son. Husband is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. I’m kind of young for the part (they’re supposed to be married 50 years, and I’m 58), but I’d be willing to dye my hair gray-er than it is. I ordered a copy of the script to read ahead of time – that’s how badly I want this part. (I’ve never done that before.) I ran into a guy I did a show with two years ago who wants to audition for it, too. I mailed him the script after I read it – it would be so great to do this show with him. Fingers crossed!

And the first Republican Congressman to say he absolutely can’t vote for Trump and instead he’s going to vote for Hillary is from the Great Empire State! Richard Hanna of Central New York. Here’s the top of the story from my old colleague in Syracuse, Mark Weiner (no relation to Anthony):

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna, a three-term Republican, said Tuesday he will vote for Hillary Clinton for president because Donald Trump is “unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country.”

Hanna becomes the first Republican member of Congress to publicly declare he will vote for Clinton in November.

Other GOP members of Congress have refused to endorse Trump, but until now none had promised to vote for his Democratic opponent.

Hanna announced his decision Tuesday morning in an op-ed and interview exclusive to Syracuse.com. The retiring congressman previously said he could never support Trump, but he had stopped short of backing Clinton.

I can deal with chunks-in-teeth talk, but last spring’s Ted Cruz tonsil stone discussions skeeved me badly.
    What IS that?
    “A booger.”
“A hunk of wet white snot?”

No…it was a smelly disgusting tonsil stone, an indication of rotting tonsil flesh, or worse.
Here’s a grab from the ‘nets:
“When this happens, the debris can become concentrated in white formations that occur in the pockets. Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, are formed when this trapped debris hardens, or calcifies. This tends to happen most often in people who have chronic inflammation in their tonsils or repeated bouts of tonsillitis.”
Hah…just when you thought you’d never have to remember that night ever again.

A Twitter user posted this review of one of Trump’s books, published in 1990. The reviewer, Michael Lewis, was remarkably precise in describing the deeply flawed personality we have all seen in the past year. Consider the paragraph below:

Mr. Trump’s relentless accumulation leads people often to mistake his motive for greed, when what drives the man seems to me to be more a pathological need for control. But control of what? Perhaps there was a time when he wanted to control his business; now he seems merely to want to control the opinion others hold of him. Mr. Trump has come to believe that if he nurtures his fame his business will follow. ”Success,” he writes, ”so often, is just a matter of perception.” That may explain why he goes berserk when a journalist tries to tinker with his image, but it still represents an odd and – it now seems – wrongheaded approach to commerce. The man whose first impulse after he buys a building is to change the facade has become nothing but a facade.

President Obama, in a press conference with the visiting president of Singapore, is putting the screws to Republicans, saying very explicitly that Trump is unfit to serve as president. Said that what is going on with Trump is not a normal policy disagreement, that he’d, of course, have been disappointed if McCain or Romney had won, but that he respected their knowledge of the world, of constitutional principles, and their basic decency. Said, “There comes a time when you can’t go on saying ‘I object strongly to what he says,’ but go on supporting him.”

Great to hear him speaking so forthrightly, but I fear that his doing so will make it harder for Republicans to defect.

The TV talkers are dumbfounded because Obama’s remarks about Trump were so blunt. Both were eloquent on why the TPP is important economically, on the interrelationship of trade and security issues, and on what it will mean to other leaders who have taken political risks to create this agreement if it is turned down.

Here’s the thing, Nance: Trump isn’t uniquely awful because he’s Trump. Yes, he’s a blabbermouthed, narcissistic, thin-skinned, moronic meathead. But…the awful thing is that, aside from that, he’s a Republican.

That is to say, he’s against civil rights, women not being property, equal prosperity at home and an absence of punitive violence abroad. His “positions” (those that aren’t utter nonsense, like the shitgibbonesque “border wall”) are bog-standard GOP positions, which is to say utterly Gilded Age punching-down punishment of anyone not in the two-yacht family.

So I have no new outrage about Trump that isn’t tempered by my overall loathing of the renegade madness of the bizarre mashup of economic royalism and theocratic triumphalism that is the current GOP. I can watch the latest metastsization of the brain-cancer that has destroyed the higher functions of the GOP since Reagan conned it into submission and Gingrich fed it the monkey brains with the ruminative calm of an arsonist contemplating where to place the accelerant so as to ensure that the shitheap of a madhouse goes up quickly and thoroughly enough to roast as mano of the vile coterie of malicious gibbering loons inside as possible.

    the lead:

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is refusing to back House Speaker Paul D. Ryan in his upcoming primary election, saying in an interview Tuesday that he is “not quite there yet” in endorsing his party’s top-ranking elected official.

Trump also said he was not supporting Sen. John McCain in his primary in Arizona, and he singled out Sen. Kelly Ayotte as a weak and disloyal leader in New Hampshire, a state whose presidential primary Trump won handily.

With Ryan’s Wisconsin primary scheduled for next Tuesday, Trump praised the House speaker’s underdog opponent, Paul Nehlen, for running “a very good campaign.” Trump said that Ryan has sought his endorsement, but that as of now he is only “giving it very serious consideration.”

“I like Paul, but these are horrible times for our country,” Trump said. “We need very strong leadership. We need very, very strong leadership. And I’m just not quite there yet. I’m not quite there yet.”

on one hand, what good is an endorsement, anyway?

On the other, refusing to endorse (and once again – “punching down”, and burning bridges that he would otherwise need, in the event he is elected) pisses all over his own news-coverage.

We already know that shit-for-brains Sean Hannity and Oxy-Rush (et al) will instantly shift into conspiracy mode, right after HRC hands the Donald his over-sized head…and this will be another in their supporting case.

Donald can’t possibly be that stupid, right? (alienating the Speaker of the House, bodes ill for anyone who would be President of the United States)

Of course, this required that we find the theme songs for all three and play them at the dinner table.

This all came from an offhand remark one of us made about Kate’s Daisy Duke shorts.

Basically, all three shows are a variation on a farmer’s daughter joke.

    Brian – I was going to say I was a trifle too young – only 11 in ’68 – but I seem to recall that my parents thought that Hump was a fairly decent guy and couldn’t understand the hating. But, then they;

    1) had been young marrieds in California and still remembered Nixon’s dirty tricks (the infamous pink-paper leaflet among them) in his race against Helen Douglas. He was proud of loathing Nixon long before loathing Nixon was cool. But…

    2) also didn’t think much of the Kennedys, so the whole RFK-as-candidate left them kinda meh.

What I REALLY remember was their appalled hatred of Wallace and LeMay – “the bigot and the looney”, I remember my father calling them, between Wallace’s open racism and LeMay saying that he’d use nukes to win wars.

My sister and I set up our Halloween pumpkins in the backyard on election day, dubbed one “Wallace” and the other “LeMay” and pincushioned them with arrows with the old wooden bow my father had made back in the Thirties…

Trump can not let a challenge lie. When Cruz refused to endorse him at the RNC, Trump went on a tear the next day. He’s spent five days trying to browbeat a man of infinite dignity, He’s going after Paul Ryan for siding with the Khans. He’s going after fire marshals who are only doing their job. The man seems on the verge of mental breakdown.

Early reports on Rep Hanna’s refusal to vote Trump forgot to mention he’s retiring and so doesn’t have to worry about blowback. It’s easy to take a moral stance when there’s no downside…

Mind you, daisy dukes come from another TV show (Dukes of Hazzard) that I don’t think was related to the Beverly Hillbillies/Green Acres/Petticoat Junction. (I was especially disappointed that there wasn’t more about petticoats in that show.)

I was 7, in 1968, and my mom always loved “Hubie-bird”, as she called him. My dad was a Republican, but he was a huge Kennedy man – and I have no idea who he went for in ’68.

Another rock-solid belief in our house was: CBS News/Walter Cronkite = truth, period.

I suppose that was a fairly safe assumption, but thinking a bit further (and given the “Woo doggies” title here), our 3-channel B&W TV always showed us a North Carolina small town (Mayberry) with a marvelous, unarmed white sheriff, and no non-white people at all!

Indeed, Jed Clampett (spelling) takes the white-folks out of the backhills of Hooterville (or wherever) and plunks the former mudsills (with hearts of gold) into Beverly Hills – and again, if there’s any non-white folks anywhere, I don’t remember them.

So the world I grew up was the same place (more or less) as it is now, but our TV was pretty much non-stop untruths, punctuated by the occasional – jarring! – bit of actual reality (Morley Safer in Vietnam, or Dan Rather on the convention floor, getting punched, or post-MLK assasination riots).

By way of saying, yes – Trump’s rise is jarring, but not terribly new.
