In which I am doctor-shamed.

Guys! I’m feeling much better! After a week of misery, I finally dragged myself off to the doctor, and told her about the ears and the sore throat and the fever and the non-arc of this affliction, so it must be an infection and I need some serious meds and oh my I feel terrible and–

“Your right ear looks normal.”

Well, the pain is mostly on the left side, and–

“Your left ear is fine, too.”

But, but, fever! And pain! In my ears! I’m a swimmer!

“I’ll just do a strep test, then.”

You know the end of this story. The test was negative. My ears were fine. Diagnosis: “Viral blah-blah.” Her words.

“Don’t put that on the internet or anything.”

I wouldn’t dream of it.

The next day, the very next day, I was much improved. Enough that I headed out for a quick dinner with a friend, and posed in my boss Mike Tyson T-shirt in front of one of Midtown Detroit’s dwindling number of corner stores:

This time next year it’ll be an artisanal paper store, or something. Just you wait.

But now the hour is growing late, and I want to go to bed. A couple quick links:

This was on Slate Plus, and I’m not a member, but I was able to open it: Is Trump experiencing cognitive decline? Yet another examination of the StatNews piece a couple weeks back.

Obstruction of justice and the world of hurt to come.

Let’s hope the weekend heals me fully. Have a good one, all.

Glad you’re on the mend. You must have magical powers, though, cuz I could not open the Slate article. The other link made me positively salivate with anticipation. I’d love it if Trump brings himself down because of his tweeting – he’s going to bury himself with his own words, and the simplicity of that is a beautiful thing.

I met the dog we’re going to adopt yesterday morning. Boy HOWDY did she smell. She’s getting groomed Monday, spayed Tuesday and we bring her home Wednesday. I’m hopeful we can make a success of this. She’s a little skittish, they told me, so I know this is going to be a challenge. Having owned dogs for almost 38 years I think we should handle this all right, but who knows? In the meantime I’m Google puppy kibble and am astounded at the prices of so many of these grain-free ones. Anyone have any recommendations? For now I’m thinking maybe Eukanuba, although I don’t think it’s grain-free.

(It’s early – Trump’s tweeting had nothing to do with Josh Marshall’s article. I think I meant Trump’s mouth in general – blabbing to people about firing Comey and why – and then his interview on t.v. two days later – it’s his own words that, in my mind, are going to help bring him down. That’s what I meant to say.)

Dorothy, Eukanuba is great. It makes dogs shit pink marshmallows that turn to dust in sunlight and have a nonoffensive odor even when fresh, so you’ll never have sludgy fudge on your shoe or be sitting down to dinner and wondering why everything smells like ass.

Not only did VP My Pants lawyer up with a high priced attorney, he’s no doubt paying for using money raised by his newly formed PAC: http://www.businessinsider.com/mike-pence-pac-president-trump-2017-5.

Trump’s approval rating continues to fall and I know his approval numbers are skewed by the senior citizen crowd like my parents who watch Fox News all day and have never owned a computer so have no idea whatsoever what Twitter even is. When Trump’s tweets verge on nonsense, it means nothing to them. They have no context for it. But he’s a Republican so they believe they have to support him or the country will veer into communism. In many ways, it really is that simple.

Just finished reading the Patty Hearst book. What a story! I was alive at the time, but was only 10-12 so there were many things I’d forgotten and many I never knew. I’d always believed the brainwashing story, but no longer. The odd thing is I rewatched one of her John Waters appearances and now she comes off disturbing and weird instead of quirky and cute. Of course, this means it’s even more appropriate for her to be in a Waters’ cast.

Civility is a cudgel the Republicans only drag out when they’re on the ropes. Your president boasts about grabbing pussy. That’s beyond simple vylgarity: It’s criminal.

Steve Scalise spoke to groups who were behind the radicalization of Dylan Roof. He collected money from them. Don’t preach to me about civility when there are commenters out here who advocate torture, who dismiss structural racism and civic inequality, and who rolled over for our petty mobbed up tyrant like the good little corporate cyphers they were born to be. Scared shitless. Not an ounce of guts.

Cooz and I are products of the South, so we know all about civility as a cudgel. Civility is used in the South as a way of shutting people up (especially women) and of not talking about the stampede of elephants in the room. People who are in church every time the doors open, would never let a curse word pass their lips, and would always be unfailingly polite, can also be perfectly content with believing that black people are lesser.

Consider the fact that the Southern Baptist Convention this week had to be shamed into passing a resolution condemning the alt-right. I doubt an uncivil word was ever said in derailing the original resolution, but it never made it out of committee.

So, I’m with Charlie Pierce: civility is about actions, not words. However, given that I do not possess the creativity nor the eloquence of Cooz, I will try to temper my use of swearing. I do, however, reserve my right to refer to the senior senator from Kentucky by what he is rather than by his name.

A week or two ago y’all really heaped it on Danny’s head about that couple he met at a restaurant and he ‘chuckled’ about some crap one of them said about Obama. I really don’t think he (Danny) deserved all the derision pointed at him. I also thought “What would I have done if I were in that position?” I would not want to make a scene in a restaurant and risk embarrassing myself or my spouse, but I do think I sure as hell would have stopped by their table and murmured a few choice words about their dumbass point of view on my way out of the place. Danny should be allowed to react the way he wants to react, and no one really should be telling one of us how we SHOULD have handled something, unless we are asked an opinion. We’ve all regretted things from time to time and who knows what Danny was feeling about that? We can disagree but we sure should not be pissing all over each other with insults. I thought this crowd was better than that.

Okay now I have that off my chest. Alex I was lazy and bought a 33 lb. bag of Eukanuba at Amazon today but it’s probably not going to arrive until after Nestle gets to our house Wednesday. Guess I’ll be stopping by Petco or one of those places Sunday. Mary we have a Costco membership but I swear every time we go there we spend waaaay more than we need to. My husband doesn’t know how to shop with a list and stick with it. Maybe once she’s grown and doesn’t need puppy food anymore, we’ll try the Costco food. We fed Augie and Husk Pedigree and they lived 13 and 11 years, so they were okay. We don’t really need to be overly concerned about the cost of this dog food now – all I want is for this stray to become used to us as soon as she can, and get healthy bones and skin after being on her own for 4-5 months.

Dorothy — I’ve fed Diamond brand to both my new dog and my dear departed bird dogs — they’ve probably got a grain free, but that’s never been an issue with my dogs. Diamond’s pretty no-frills, but my vet says it’s a solid brand. Of course, Hank also gets a backyard egg with his breakfast, and scraps, and lots of moldy cheese rinds, all of which do him just fine. The kitty now, I did have to go up a step brand-wise for her. She nearly froze to death before I got her, so in the fall she gets very fat, but she had a really crummy coat until I bought her fancier cat food. Now she’s sleek. Lumpy and funny looking still with only one ear and missing the tip of her tail, but sleek.

Of course, the false equivalency nonsense he was promoting two days ago was even worse, so there’s that… And he’s not shy about delivering an insult or two himself, when he feels like it, for whatever that’s worth. As this topic was expressly verboten by the Proprietress herself, I’ll leave it at that. Charles Pierce covers it much better in Sherri’s link @ 16 than I could, regardless.

Jakash, as explained several weeks ago, my “attitude” was not one of acceptance towards that Australian couple, but more along the lines of “wow, the shit people believe.”

And I don’t think you were around NNC back when Gabby Giffords was shot. The reaction was extremely knee-jerk, immediately blaming Sarah Palin and the “Right” for promoting a toxic environment of hate-filled political rhetoric. It was later found out that this was not true insofar as being a motivating factor for Jared Loughner. In fact, he seemed to have no affiliation with pop-culch politics and it was a classic case of paranoid schizophrenia. The same cannot be said for 66-year-old James Hodgkinson who was steeped in the progressive hate-rhetoric culture and motivated by it to his heinous act. So no “false-equivalency” at all. And that is the last thing I will say of this.

She’s a genuine hero, as far as I’m concerned. The article points out what many of us noted back at the time – that candidate Trump frequently pointed her out and used her name, while whipping his crowds into an ‘anti-meeeedia’ frenzy; again, and again.

A generation or two ago, war reporters (like Cronkite and Sevareide) rode in bombers and reported back what they experienced; and Ms Turr certainly earned her stripes, too.

But that day people were yelling at Danny made me feel very sad, and I had to let it all sink in before I could actually say something about it. I did not go back and re-read any of that day’s words before I posted here a few times today. It was more of a blue feeling I had, a disappointment that such hurtful things were being said when I think Danny was misunderstood, and no one stopped to ask him how he felt. Seemed (at the time) like everyone jumped to conclusions. I’ll shut up about it now. I was just trying to plea that we all try to remember we’re all human and have feelings and not be so quick to judge.

The world could do with a lot less finger pointing and blame and instead sit down with people whose opinions are different from their own, and at least try to be less judgmental. That goes for me, too. I’m awfully judgey about anyone I know who voted for Trump. I just don’t bring it up because I don’t want to lose (some) friendships. Convection oven on the lowest setting works for us when we’re making jerky. you could probably put a regular oven on 180 or so, crack the door, and rig a fan to blow through it.

Breville’s top of the line toaster over has a “dehydrate” setting, believe it or not. Of course it’s $400. The next time I build a kitchen I’m considering making a home for one of those. We already use the toaster oven more than the standard one.

Is there a Gander Mountain or Cabela’s near you? Either one should have a dehydrator on the shelf.

Any home and farm type store should have a dehydrator too. Here they’re Mill’s Fleet+Farm. When I lived in Michigan it was Family Farm and Home. Most places seem to have something like that.

Thanks for the ideas, folks! We have both farm stores and hunting stores around here. It hadn’t occurred to me that people use these gizmos to make jerky. Duh. The search continues anew this morning.

The garlic scapes are all very tender and curly right now, not gone to seed yet, so I’m going to snip them all. The cilantro, which came back from last year, are all beginning to bolt with the hot weather, so I’m going to harvest that today as well and use it in a salsa, along with the scapes, to take to a party tonight.

Already there are peppers a-poppin’ and even some tomatoes, though not mature yet. It’s been a good year so far for the garden.

Gander Mountain is closing their store in the Fort, according to a sign I saw on Lima Rd earlier in the week. So Alex, you might get a good buy there, or they might be out completely.

Went to the farm stores and the hunting stores and it was still a big bust. Went to Gander Mountain, which is having a going-out-of-business sale, and the place was packed with zombie-eyed hillbillies and smelled like reefer. But no food dehydrators there, only spare shelves for a model they used to sell.

So shopping online for one now before I go spray weedkiller on my gravel and call it a day.

It’s 91 in Abiquiu right now, going up to 96, the humidity is 9%, yesterday was 5%. There are 2 major fires that are sending a lot of smoke our way. It’s that time of year. I read that Phoenix was expecting to get up to 120 today, I hope Scout is faring ok through that. The monsoon season is supposed to start in a week or two, cooling rains will be welcome.

No wonder Trumpers hate Shakespeare. Sonnet 157 really has it in for him:

Lo in the White house when the faint blue light
Spills on the carpeting from the big screen
The orange daubed and wattled human shite
    lofts his outerborough goombah scream

And having cleared the greasy chicken tub
His jowls aslick and quivering in wrath
A staffer that has drawn the shortest nub
Whispers “it is time, sir, for your bath.”

It’s then with withering pitch the blob replies
In the voice and manner of Wayne Newton
“I wanna milkshake and some dirty fries!
Go get ‘em now, before I phone up Putin.”

“I’m going to fucking fuck up this TV.
Jesus wept when he was crucified like me.”

    And so…Fathers’ Day
Dad missed a train connection trying to get to Florida (Pensacola Naval Air Station) and his brother George busted the old Auburn car from northern Indiana to Cincinnati where Dad ran like crazy and grabbed the last car and made his train . And I had to run to catch a train after a rented bicycle flatted out in Chicago. 1981…so much alike. Dad was stationed at Alameda Naval Air Station and was manifested to head to the Pacific on the USS Franklin . Mysteriously, a toothache sent him to sick bay in California and the Franklin sustained Kamikaze attacks and many were killed. And I was carrying orders for nine days awaiting air transpo to the Central Highlands to assume duty as a medic with the 196th Light Infantry Bde. (23rd Infanty Div) but the monsoons kept scrubbing my flights, my orders expired, and finally I was put on a C-119 which crashed in the blinding monsoon weather…some casualties ;I was OK, area too “hot” for truck rescue for three days and finally a jeep came for me and another medic, and so, I made it to Cam Ranh Bay then eventually to Nha Trang where I hooked up for general medic work and also as a part time Dust-Off Helicopter Ambulance Medic.
So Dad missed a great chance to die via Kamikaze attack but for a toothache, and I missed the worst firebase attack in the entire Vietnam war, FSB (Firebase Mary Ann…March, 1971) because of monsoons grounding all transpo flights to the Central Highlands for nine days…Dad and me, two peas in a pod, two D (death)-dodgers…two slackers. Me and Dad. Happy Fathers’ Day, every child.
    Dad lived to age 86.

Interesting Neil Steinberg piece in the Sun-Times today, with a Ft. Wayne connection, to boot. “A crumpled photo, and a daughter’s search for the father she never met.”

“‘She gave me some shirts and this box to bring the baby home in — a white, rectangular-shaped box with a little soft pad in it. Babies born in Madison, Tennessee, at that time came home in these boxes.’ They went to get her in their 1966 Ford Fairlane and were introduced to a baby with black hair that stuck straight up. ‘She looked like a bird that had been pushed out of the nest…'”

With a photo that documents the truth of both of those observations…
