   Love the title…here, so far, a bit of gardening and two long dog walks and the Indy 500 . Now a blast on the bicycle before the HBO show about the Florida 2000 election fiasco, starring Kevin Spacey. Also watched “Knocked Up” earlier, then off to a Chinese buffet….ho-hum…the water looked mah-vell-uss, dah-link!! Ciao!

   Very nice! I suppose the opposite of a bitter-gun-clinger is a joyful journalist/shootist! (Remind me to never get on your wrong side)

   Plan to sail out into the middle of the river to watch the Airplane races next weekend? I suspect this will be awesome, more so than car races. I doubt than anyone will be able to get close to the races without buying a ticket, unless they have a boat. Do can commerical events close down an entire river to precent spectators?

   Our weekend was sublime. We went to a lovely country wedding in Knox, PA, stayed at the Sheraton Four Points overnight in Cranberry, PA and then attended my family reunion on Sunday. Not as many attendees this year as in years past, but the smaller crowd was nice. We haven’t been to one in about 7 years so it was good to see cousins I haven’t seen in awhile. My mom reveled in being the oldest one there (she’ll be 86 in July).

   Yesterday we cooked ribs and burgers on the grill, made corn on the cob, deviled eggs and hot cheesy potatoes. And Mike tried grilling bok choy for the first time. It was outstanding! Yay for leftovers tonight!

   Looks like you had a nice holiday. Weather was gorgeous here, lots of yard work got done and I’m feeling it this morning. Went to a cook out Saturday afternoon and watched no political news this weekend. I am beyond caring who said what about anything, as this has turned into a fifth grade squabble.

   Sounds great, Dorothy. Sunday night, Pam decided that Monday, we should grill some burgers and brats, and invite whoever wanted to show up over – and then things built from there. Monday morning Pam tasked me with replacing the burner thing in the bottom of the gas grill. It is a very simple job, but with eleventy-seven fasteners and washers and gaskets and brackets. Plus, when I removed the old one, some mission-creep occurred when I decided to clean out the accumulated residue from several summers of sizzling meats….so that 90 minutes later, as I was finishing up, Pam asked me if we should get a bucket of chicken. This sailed right over my head, and I said that if she thought we would need the additional food, I’d saddle up and go get it.

   Whereupon she lowered her chin and said it looked like I’d never finish the grill job! Whereupon I said something like Wrongo! – I’m done! Whereupon we fired up the grill, which worked marvelously well, and then loaded burgers onto it, and then just when people began arriving and all was falling into place – we ran out of gas!!

   But in the end, it was a very pleasant day!

   I thought that only happened to us, Brian!! We’ve learned our lesson, though – we always check the tank or try to keep a spare around now. Old age pays off sometimes, ya know?

    Caught William Safire on C-SPAN this weekend, talking about his updated political dictionary. It was a very entertaining talk, and many of the “era’s key words— “élite,” “mainstream,” “real,” “values,” “patriotic,” “snob,” “liberal” were discussed; it was very entertaining and informative – especially coming from a wordsmith who had helped to popularize some of these, while in the Nixon White House with Pat Buchanan

    At the cookout Monday, my extended family and I eventually discussed politics, and our opinions are scattered across the spectrum. When the Limbaugh wing piped up, I reiterated (as always) how much of a phony that guy is (the great RWR could do no wrong at all, according to that gasbag, and yet Limbaugh never actually cast a vote for Ronald Reagan) – a surfer of current public opinion and a usurper of whatever the hell the ‘real’ conservative movement ever was. IN the other thread, Dorothy pointed out that getting older pays off sometimes – and one big benefit I’ve gained (while becoming an old guy) is learning how to concede all the extraneous stuff, and remain serene.

    Once the Limbaugh wing of the family said (at length) that we really need to be out of Iraq (after earlier deriding Obama as saying “change change change”), it was (gently) pointed out that – if we did nothing else BUT conduct an orderly exit from Iraq, THAT would be a pretty huge, positive, and worthwhile change! – enough to vote FOR Obama and against McCain….whereupon we learned that at least one of the Limbaugh wing doesn’t plan to vote for anyone!

    The house rule is, you can’t bitch if you won’t vote, and it was therefore time to head back into the house, and get a refill of icy cold Diet Coke, and some more of that southwestern dip and chips
