It’s been a taxing day. Cold, blowy, and the family room is still a mess, so I’m living more in the bedroom and it seems to be a sign of age that I hate having my routine messed up.

In a recent televised news conference and interview, Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young said he’s concerned about a white van “snatching” young girls to sell their organs. But Baltimore Police say they have no reports of any such incidents.
Young’s source, according to an interview with WBAL, is social media.
“We’re getting reports of somebody in a white van trying to snatch up young girls for human trafficking and for selling body parts, I’m told. So we have to be careful because there’s so much evil going on, not just in the city of Baltimore, but around the country,” he said. “It’s all over Facebook.”
Police spokesman Matt Jablow said the department is “aware of the posts on social media, but we do not have any reports of actual incidents.”
Why do I even come to work in the morning, if this is the way a big-city mayor gets his information? I ask you.

Princess Anne was trending on Twitter this morning, and my first thought was “awwww, no…” but it turns out she’s perfectly healthy, and in her right mind. Mom tried to beckon her over to greet the American President and his spouse, and she waved her off to stay off to one side, away from the receiving line where brother Chuck looked profoundly weary.
Keep in mind Princess Anne is the member of the royal family who was the victim of an attempted kidnapping where she was told to get out of her car by a guy with a gun, to whom she said “Not bloody likely.”

Dr Robinson’s successor has huge (huge!) shoes to fill, and I’ve no doubt that some genuinely marvelous candidates are already right here . We had a fantastic day in Paris. Got together with my designer friend from Chicago who lives here now with his French husband and their 2 kids. We spent the whole day with him and he showed us some cool places we’ve never been.
Tonight, in just a few minutes we’re going to a concert at a nearby chapel. It’s Bach for piano.
Tomorrow is the big strike, should be interesting. My friend says we will have the city to ourselves except for protesters. We shall see. Hope it’s over by Saturday when we take the train down to Avignon.

So I was wrong, our concert tonight in Paris was Chopin on piano not Bach. It was by an amazing young Russian woman Elizaveta Frolova and you heard it here folks this young woman is going places. She made Chopin sound like I’ve never heard it before. I was crying. Wow.

Tuesday marked 40 years since the tragedy in Cincinnati which left 11 kids dead. WLW-AM-700 has had some conversations broadcast with a studio host and some people connected to some survivors. Early next year The Who are returning to Cincinnati at a different venue to sort of give back something, albeit it so late. Of the 11 dead that night, 3 were from Finneytown, nearby, and the profits from the new concert shall be going to that school. Pete Townshend told the people organizing the future show how that night in 1979 changed him forever…he already was a drug and alcohol abuser but after that night he began draining bottles of brandy in one night. Roger Daltrey said he has felt bad about it every day. Some of the band members have contacted relatives of the dead kids and expressed condolences…it was nothing to do with The Who of course, just horribly negligent crowd control and stubbornness of venue chiefs who refused to recognize a disaster in the making. They were told to open the doors but responded they were short of ticket-takers and refused. I never liked The Who but never forgot that night.
I have enjoyed Netflix , receiving it filtered through my BluRay player. Two days ago they cut that technology out completely. The new set-top boxes have apps I guess so I was going to take all 3 in and switch them out, but my wife balked as she had too many favorites DVR’d, so I got a 4K Amazon Fire Stick and just installed it…it took like five minutes, it has Alexa, and now I should be able to pare down my cable bill. I have Amazon Prime now so hopefully I can watch that show you folks raved about, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I don’t know a damn thing about it yet.

David C, I believe King Crimson destroyed a Mellotron onstage for similar reasons. And you can find video online of a Yes concert in 74 or so at Queens Park Rangers’ soccer stadium, electrical power was shaky and the keyboards kept going out of tune. Probably including, since Patrick Moraz was in the band then, a Vako Orchestron, which worked off optical disks… even weirder than a Mellotron.

Re: the Who concert Dexter referenced @ 19. One of my fave sit-coms growing up, WKRP in Cincinnati, did an episode just a couple months later on that very subject, which occurred while they were in production during the show’s short run. I saw an interview with Hugh Wilson, the show creator, who said he had to fight with network execs just to get the idea of doing an episode on the subject approved. His point was, “We’re doing a show about a rock radio station in Cincinnati. How can we NOT talk about it?” The execs feared a sit-com would make light of the tragedy, but to his credit Wilson wanted to use the opportunity to speak out against “festival seating”–the very thing that led to the 11 dead concert-goers. I haven’t seen an episode of WKRP in probably decades so I really can’t say if the comedy holds up after all this time, but I do remember being impressed that a sit-com show runner–who could easily do 4 or 5 seasons of fluff comedy and then spend the rest of his days cashing fat royalty checks–would fight so hard to talk about social issues, in what was essentially real time, on network TV.

They say there are violent protests on the east side of Paris. Nothing is happening anywhere near where we are on the left bank. We saw some buses running today and everything we’ve heard so far is that our train on Saturday should be fine.
We went to the Louis Vuitton foundation (art museum) today in the the Bois de Boulogne to see an extensive exhibit about Charlotte Perriand, a French architect/interior/ furniture designer who is most famous for working with Corbusier. He got most of the credit for her work but of late it’s becoming clear that she was very talented and has been under appreciated and under credited. It was a very well done and informative exhibit. I didn’t realize that she died in 1999 at the age of 96 and worked until nearly the end of her life. We have some of the furniture she designed in our places in both Chicago and Abiquiu. After that excursion we took a taxi to the Hotel Lutetia where we spent our honeymoon nearly 20 years ago. We each got a martini at the bar and our bill came to the equivalent of $60, but it was totally worth it. Our olive garnish in our martini came with a toothpick with a tiny black feather at the end. Fancy.

I was impressed by the push-back from Nancy Pelosi when some reporter, obviously hoping for a gotcha quote, asked if he hates Il Trump. She was leaving the podium when he shouted that question and she went back and laid into him for good minute or more. As much as I felt she’s been soft on impeachment in the past she was canny enough to recognize a trick question when someone utters it. Good for her.

Definitely a bummer day in Paris. We walked in a steady rain to the Louvre but when we arrived there was a long line outside, we weren’t about to stand in the rain for who knows how long. We thought because of the strike there wouldn’t be a lot of people there. Wrong. So we walked (still in the rain) to Les Deux Maggots, another Cafe favorite and had a two hour lunch, taking our time drying out. I came back to the hotel after that, my husband has a meeting with a Parisian lawyer about our possible design job in the south of France. It wasn’t raining when I walked back to the hotel, but very damp air and cold. I’m about to go down and have a glass of wine in the cafe on the ground floor. At least we’re going to another concert tonight. Hopefully it won’t be raining then, but it’s supposed to. In fact it’s supposed to rain in Paris for the next week. We’ll be in the south where the temps will be in the 50s during the days and sunnier.
We got a car for our trip to Avignon tomorrow where we pick up the rental car we ordered months ago. We take that car to Le Thor which is about 30km away. The drive from Paris to Avignon is about 7 hours. The train would have been 4.

Since I’m sitting in the hotel room with nothing much to do I’ll tell you guys about a celebrity sighting we had here in Paris. The actor Tim Roth was sitting at a cafe with his wife of 27 years (I googled him), she’s a former fashion designer. Then I’m pretty sure I saw Candace Bergen walking on the street. She was married to the French director Louis Malle until he died. I know she has married again but she had a daughter with Malle and maybe spends a lot of time in France. She has gained weight since her Murphy Brown days but she’s stunning still.

I haven’t bothered to put up Christmas decorations for several years now. We rarely get company and I didn’t want to put forth all that work for just the two of us. But now that our granddaughter is almost 3, I wanted to decorate again. Well I had the day off today; I went to Cincinnati to do a little shopping and had lunch with my hubby. I got some groceries at Jungle Jim’s. Since I got home at 3:00 I’ve done maybe 1/3 of what I used to do for decorating and I’m beat! The fireplace looks really nice, and the artificial tree with all of our penguin ornaments is up. I have no stocking for Olivia so I might whip one up tomorrow on my sewing machine. Next weekend we’ll get a real tree and decorate that, so at least I’m splitting up the work. And two weeks from today O is coming for the weekend. Right this minute I just want someone to come in and make us some dinner.
Deborah I’ve been thinking of you there in Paris. The news this morning showed some confrontations and I was relieved you are not staying near that section of the city.

Christmas decorating here anymore is a couple of white strands in the bushes outside. We don’t have the room or time or motivation to do much more than that.
Our next-door neighbors who usually lay it on too thick have done nothing so far this year, glory hallelujah. They have a tacky flashing reindeer-and-sleigh that steals the show and not in a good way, and this year it’s nowhere to be seen. Maybe it finally shorted out or something.
Eighteen shopping days until Christmas and I’m not going to do one damned bit of shopping this year unless it’s something I need like buttwipes or booze.

We’ve been doing less decorating every year and since we started going to Orlando for Christmas, only putting up a small tree. But we’re moving and then going to Orlando, so we pulled out an 18 inch tree and a wreath for outside and called it done. We gave up shopping years ago. Less is more and brings more joy. My new theme in life.

The lights have gotten less extensive and more and more of the knick knacks stay in the boxes each year. If I didn’t decorate at all, it would be weird, but I could do with about a tenth of it even so. Our tree is about to turn 30, and when we replace it I doubt it will be eight feet tall.

Apropos of nothing, but my wife and I watched the first 3 episodes of “Killing Eve” last night. It’s not often that I find myself in disagreement with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but this would be an instance. We thought it went from “willing suspension of disbelief” to “preposterous” right quick. Add in a few instances of unnecessary gruesomeness and I believe we’re out. Neither of us are particular fans of Sandra Oh, so that certainly doesn’t help. Uh, what are we missing?

We arrived in Avignon and got our previously ordered rental car, then had a dickens of a time figuring out the navigator. We gave up on the one in the car and used my iPhone. Then we laughed all the way to Le Thor at the female voice’s lousy French pronunciation of the street names.
We had a most excellent meal at The Bastide Rose where we’re staying. This is why I went ahead and lost a little more weight than I was initially planning. The woman who runs the place is a most interesting person, her son is the chef.
The weather here is marvelous, high 50s in the daytime but cold at night so good sleeping weather. Leaves are still on many of the trees, more like late fall. It’s an agricultural area, but the farm fields are very beautifully manicured even when dried and cut back. a lot of standing water around, they had heavy rains earlier in the week.
Later today we’re going to a nearby village which I can’t begin to spell the name of to visit their open air market to look for Christmas gifts.
Thanks for letting me know you are interested in the travelogue, it’s hard for me not to comment about it.

The mellotron concert was most interesting last night, four players and seven or eight mellotrons, including a double-keyboard version, in the round in a black-walled performance space which held maybe a couple hundred. Big hanging screens, three showing Sixties-style moving color blobs and the fourth a four-way split of cameras aimed at the back of the mellotrons so we could see the tapes moving.
The only music I recognized was one Philip Glass piece, and another sounded like it was going to morph into “Watcher of the Skies” and didn’t. A lot of it stimulated visual images – spy movie, cowboy movie, barren moonscape – and overall I had never seen anything quite like it. We went to the village of L’Isle Sur-La-Sorgue (I think I spelled it right) today for the open market, it was even better than it was in July, probably for Christmas shoppers. We found lots of cool Christmas gifts, almost all of our gift finding is done. I had no expectation that we would get it almost all done this early. Now we have to figure out how to package and mail from here. Hopefully the stuff will arrive to the recipients before Christmas.

Another stunning delicious meal here. Hard to believe it could be better tonight than last night.
Talking to the widow of Pierre Salinger who runs this property has been so interesting. One of the things she said was that Bobby Kennedy was assassinated while he was right next to her husband who was Kennedy’s campaign manager at the time (they weren’t married then). After that Salinger left the country to live in France, he couldn’t face the violence in the US anymore. She said that Jackie Kennedy married Onassis for the same reason, to get away from it all.
This woman has so many stories to tell, it’s amazing.
