Another crazy week.

Well, that was something, last night, wasn’t it? Unfortunately, when I look through my various news feeds and contacts, looking for evidence that even one MAGAt watched, I get crickets. There was a brief shower last night, followed by a double rainbow, and I see copious evidence that everyone ran outside to get a picture, but pay attention to Liz Cheney? Not much.

I didn’t see the whole thing in real time (Kate had a gig, a repro-rights fundraiser.) But I listened to as much of it as I could on the radio and reconstructed the parts I missed afterward. My favorite moment was Ivanka’s hostage video, which apparently put her back on a first-name-last-name basis with dear ol’ dad:

Yesterday was wild all around. One of the remaining five GOP gubernatorial hopefuls in the race was arrested on J6 charges. I’m confident this will put him way out in front of the field.

Whattaguy:

Earlier this year, he appeared at a meet-the-candidates forum, and told the crowd that they should pay attention to what’s going on in their polling place, and if they see something they don’t like, to just march over to the tabulator and yank the cord out of the wall. As the person who ran the tabulator the last couple elections, I would add: Don’t do that.

It seems there is plenty to talk about, and I have a podcast taping to prep for. (This prep involves taking a shower.) Carry on. And have a great weekend. Here’s a picture of a hummingbird perched in one of our backyard trees to get you feeling weekend-y.

Missed all the excitement last night save for a CBS News confab at the end to summarize/interpret what went down. With any luck this will motivate Dems to vote in the midterms, not that it will do any good in a state like Indiana.

My dominant emotions watching the hearings last night were sadness, embarrassment and nausea. How in dog’s name did our nation become so debased as to be divided in our view of the riots especially when the videos illustrate the thuggish, brutish, indefensible behavior of the traitors? Can you imagine how all this looks to other nations around the world? Putin, Xi, Orban, Erdogan and their ilk probably had to jack off twice last night just to relieve their euphoria. And the “la, la, la I can’t hear you” of the QOP turns my stomach into a vast pool of acid.

Maybe the rioters should’ve hung Mike Pence after all. Would that have had any effect on the MAGA cult. . .the public murder of the second-most powerful political figure in the nation? Or would those who hoisted the rope be hailed as heroes by the mouth-breathing loons?

Jeff Borden @ 3: Same emotions here. I posted on FB last night (I should know better) that I’m so sad that some people on my friends’ list see January 6th differently than I do.

this is the sole response from one of the few Conservative Right Wingers I still have on my list:

Aren’t they prosecuting the perps who engaged in the riot? Not sure how we see it differently. I didn’t watch this since I didn’t think the committee would disclose anything new.

When that is your viewpoint, nay your Identity, what can anyone say to convince you otherwise?

  6. Julie Robinson said on June 10, 2022 at 11:32 am

They disclosed a lot that was new as well as showing clips from interviews with Princess Ivanka and Billy Barr, as well as from the documentary filmmaker. Anyone else notice his opening remarks included that he was appearing because he’d been subpoenaed.

The committee has done their homework. The presentation was organized and compelling. They weren’t reading from paper but used Teleprompters in a natural way. Liz Cheney was impressive.

How can it not change minds? Fingers in ears saying la, la, la might have something to do with it. Most of my right-wing friends on Facebook have dropped me but I’ve noticed not a one of the remaining has said a thing.

I’m going to watch them all.

Deborah, forgive me if this has already been ruled out, but have you tried an antenna? We have one of those flat ones connected to each TV and get tolerable coverage.

Unfortunately, I don’t think murdering Pence would have changed many minds, including Pence’s. He still claims it was an honor to serve as VP to Trump and I have yet to hear him give anything but the most weeny, tepid denunciation of what went down on Jan 6. Watching what I could of the presentation last night (I am back in the hospital for more treatment), it was clear as a sunny summer day that if that mob had gotten to Pence, Mother would now be a widow.
But then, if you live in Indiana, none of this is a surprise.

While I thought last night was a very powerful presentation, there is one concept that I find difficult to accept: That the march and subsequent insurrection on the Capitol was just one part of an orchestrated, complex plan to overturn the election that was planned in intricate detail by one Donald J. Trump. I don’t think he has the stamina and intelligence to think beyond his next meal.

Although I did think a couple of times during the broadcast that if he put half of the effort of overturning the election into fighting COVID he would have been re-elected.

I could see someone else trying to pull this off – Nixon, sure; Bush (via Cheney), OK; but this guy? The guy who makes Late Stage Reagan look like Roosevelt? I know he’s evil and if he stopped watching Fox News he’d have an extra 14 hours a day to work on something, but I don’t think Trump has the stamina or intelligence to plan anything more complex than his next bowel movement.

I love hummingbirds, we have lots of them in NM but they look different than your photo, Nancy. Ours are teeny tiny. I ordered 2 hummingbird feeders that are supposed to arrive today. We planted a lot of scarlet runner beans in the yard, they vine up nicely and have red flowers that attract the hummingbirds.

It’s going to be 92° here today, thankfully about 15% humidity. It actually rained yesterday evening for about 20 minutes, not great but better than nothing.

As I said in the previous comment thread I couldn’t get the TV to be on a non-cable channel. We have the Xfinity free flex too and I tried to watch NBC Peacock but all it did was give me the display that tells you what it is but I kept clicking and it wouldn’t start. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong, but it was fine watching it on CNN live on my laptop. I don’t watch regular TV, only streaming stuff, like Netflix and Apple+. We have cable in Chicago because it comes with with our monthly assessment, but I’m in NM for the summer. Maybe I’ll have it figured out by the next hearing date.

Julie, agreed. It was like it all came together for me….the plan was to gin up the MAGA crowd and pin the election overthrow on them, while making it look like it was just a spontaneous gathering that went bad. But there’s so much evidence of pre-planning and preparation, from the mob’s arrival before Trump’s speech telling them to go, to the weapons stored in Virginia hotel rooms…it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Just wrapped up Cub Day Camp, and once again I leave with some hope for the future. It won’t be easy, but neither is getting a barbed fish hook out of the back of someone’s head, or getting a few hundred people to sing a round successfully to a harmonious conclusion, let alone teaching nine year olds how to fold a US flag into a proper blue & white only showing triangle. Yet it all can be done, given time and patience and persistence.

President Biden is coming to Santa Fe tomorrow to meet with the governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham and others to assess the fire situation. NM is asking the Federal government to help with the cost of the major fires that are still burning, they’re still only 65% contained. They say they started because of a controlled burn by the US Forest service that got out of hand in January and then smoldered for months and came back to life in April, the US government needs to pony up to help restore buildings and landscapes that were destroyed. He’s going to be in Albuquerque first then come to Santa Fe. It would be cool to get to see him while he’s here but it’s so last minute, not sure how we will know where exactly he’ll be.

Liz Cheney was called “Churchillian” by Morning Joe commentators Friday morning. She was as convincing as the charge-readers in Israel when Eichmann was about to be hanged for war crimes. I was 11 and I remember that well.
Anyway, Ivanka’s stunning statement about her allegiance to Barr was amazing. The newly-released January 6 footage was damning, more-so than before by far. It’s so obvious that Trump should be tried for criminal sedition that now maybe Garland can step on the gas pedal. It is time. Any of you Hoosiers see Banks’ statement? He is defending Trump to the bitter end. A real fucking henchman.

Deborah, he’s there, and the last fire crews left as the first seasonal staff arrived May 24. They have had crews arrive for their 8 to 12 day backcountry treks since June 7, and he’s done three opening campfires (he’s there for the Activities & Events team at base camp), all at the rain location which they are very thankful for. There was still a fair amount of smoke in the air when he got there on the western horizon (Angel Fire area burn), but that’s just about gone now.

For those who don’t know, Philmont Scout Ranch has about 24,000 Scouts pass through each summer doing backcountry backpacking treks, plus around 3,000 adult advisors. There’s a two-sided Base Camp operation (for out-bound & in-bound crews) outside of Cimarron, where my son is, and a couple dozen staffed camps around the property doing everything from blacksmithing to pole climbing to rappelling to mine tours (two stabilized mine shafts they can enter). On a typical ten day trek a crew will visit four staffed camps with program and six campsites where they are on their own. All told, there’s a thousand staff present all summer, not counting the year round ranch employees.

Philmont when he & I went in 2013 had to shut down half the property and re-route treks for wildland fires approaching the ranch; it was 2018 they had to shut down the whole summer due to the Ute Park fires, and then 2020 they got shut down the whole summer by COVID. So they’ve had quite a time of it the last few years, but it’s rolling this summer!

Nevermind that. The important news this week, as we all learned from the Columbus Dispatch, was the release of strawberry-flavored Frostys.

As a long-time fan of Wendy’s and Dave Thomases (both the “SCTV” guy and the restaurant owner) I stopped last night and had one.

Friends, I am a bit of a nut for all kinds of ice cream, but I am sorry to report the strawberry-flavored Frosty is lousy. Very sickly sweet, and it’s uncanny how well they’ve made it taste almost nothing like a real strawberry.

My spicy chicken sandwich was reliably good, though.

  21. Julie Robinson said on June 11, 2022 at 11:37 am

Remember when Wendy’s actually had good food? Fake strawberry flavor is the worst. Wait, fake banana flavor is the worst.

I keep thinking about the hearings. Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney kept their calm demeanor the entire evening, despite the highly emotional and inflammatory subject manner. This kept it from devolving into a side show. Our area Representative Stephanie Murphy is on the committee, and though I wasn’t here yet to vote for her, I’m proud that she’s part of it.

We went to a great concert of movie music last night. It’s a community orchestra so my expectations were low but they are quite good, if not up to professional standards. But no pro symphony has 125 players, and what a sound they produced on the big numbers. It was a good palate cleanser.

Not feeling very retired this week, worked four full days at my occasional and irregular medical school practice patient gig. Watched and made notes on pretty much the same physical exam 47 times.

About the songs from a couple days ago… I will go with Hank Williams’ “Alone and Forsaken” and the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” One desperate, one optimistic.

  24. Jeff Gill said on June 11, 2022 at 5:35 pm

Bassett, sorry to hear that. Philmont is not a “safe” place in many ways, but the fatalities are most often, sadly, adult heart attacks, followed by lightning, then flash flooding . . . with bear attacks, which is what we all spend the most time trying to prevent on backcountry treks, a distant fourth. I don’t think they’ve had a bear attack, let alone a death, in many decades.

Update: I asked, and in 1986, 2001, & 2010 they had some serious bear attacks, not clear when the last fatality was but it’s been a long while. But there’s an average of two adults dying on the property each summer from cardiac issues, which between 7,000 ft altitude or above & exertion is probably an actuarial inevitability.

I think there were some scout deaths a while ago at Philmont related to flash flooding. It happened within the last decade since we’ve had a presence in NM if I remember correctly. I don’t think it was a fault of the program, just an out of the blue, wild, unexpected, natural occurrence. But I might be wrong about where it happened?

Cheney’s level demeanor was quite refreshing to witness – just watched the youtube of the Barr-etc-Ivanka testimonies – like a cool drink of water during our current rationality drought.

As for tasty strawberry items, Trader Joe’s Neopolitans (oreo-style vanilla and chocolate wafers with a strawberry cream filling available seasonally only) exude the most wonderful strawberry scent which I was able to smell more than 4 feet away at their sample table (pre-COVID, of course). My annual cookie purchase. 🙂

Deborah, it was 2015; happened right after I left there, in fact. But Philmont had two adult heart attacks before the end of July, and that’s a recurring problem . . . they increase the physical restrictions on adult advisors going into the backcountry, but that means it’s even harder to find volunteers to do so.

The flash flood death was a truly flukey event, but a stern reminder that even a tiny rivulet has to be considered a possible torrent if enough overnight rain falls. They camped thinking they were far enough away and higher than the extant stream, but a triple series of storms pushed it up almost 20 feet, washing out the whole crew and killing one Scout. Very sad situation for all concerned.

I was just looking over “today in nn.c history”… front story from 2006 was about a 12-year-old boy whose parents had been grooming him to become a major-league pitcher… “if his arm holds out,” indeed.

Here’s the original NYT story, paywalled of course: https://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/sports/playmagazine/04baseball.html?ei=5070&en=407058ab00fcc882&ex=1150257600&pagewanted=all

Turned out, as far as I could tell from a little Googling, that he played in college for a couple different directional schools and that was it. Would be interesting to hear from him now.

I was never much good at sports, but I remember playing casual pickup baseball games in the neighborhood fifty-plus years ago, and I don’t know the last time I saw one… seems like kids have to play in leagues and be organized now, and if you don’t make the travel team, you’re done.

I’ve been told that rec league baseball and softball are still alive here but just barely. If you haven’t played in a travel league, you get zero consideration at the high school level. Travel ball didn’t exist when I was playing baseball. I was good enough to make the team as a 9th grader in high school though. My parents could have never afforded gallivanting all over the area to let me play baseball. I had a .180 batting average as a freshman so the coach and I agreed that maybe I was at the end of my baseball career. People chasing scholarships and pro careers for their kids are pretty close to delusional.

Broke a vertebrae while wrestling on a Sunday morning (church going family but sports generally tops church in these cases). He’s ok, no paralysis but can no longer wrestle. I had several people say how sad it was because he would absolutely have gotten a college scholarship. He was in 6th grade when it happened. He’s barely making it through high school now.
I also have several cousins who had kids majorly into sports. One was on something like 4 soccer teams in middle school and barely made it to graduation. He flunked out of high school.

For most, that huge scholarship is a pipe dream.

Icarus, summer is delightful in Northern New Mexico. Today’s high will be 93° but at 10% humidity it’s not bad, especially in the shade, and that’s about as hot as it ever gets during the summer. Santa Fe has an elevation of 7,200 ft and Abiquiu where our cabin is, it’s 6,500 ft. The altitude makes a big difference. And the low humidity makes it much nicer than hot, humid Chicago. And it always cools way off at night, like mid to upper 50s, sometimes it gets into the low 60s at night. Sleeping is divine with the windows open, ceiling fans on, cool fresh dry breezes. We don’t have AC because it’s really not necessary. And in the summer when it gets hot during the day you can drive up to the ski basin area where it’s 20° cooler than in the city. Winter however is cold in Northern NM but the sun is out almost every day, even when it gets down in the teens and single digits at night it’s a dry cold, so it isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as Chicago’s damp, freezing winters. It does snow in northern NM, sometimes a lot, again because of the altitude. I try to be in NM in the winter and summer and Chicago in fall and spring. It doesn’t always work out that way but I try.

edit: the national forests are still closed because of the fires, so we can’t drive up to the cooler mountain areas right now.

High school basketball, and it was a huge deal there even for Indiana, started with competitive league games in the fifth grade and the weeding-out process began. If you decided in the ninth or tenth grade that you wanted to take a shot at basketball it was difficult to even get a tryout. Won a lot of games, though, so that was OK.

She had high hopes for her second son and he just graduated from a small college in Central Ohio, where he holds the record for RBI’s in one game. Still, he’s not going to be the rich pro player she envisioned when they were chasing the dream on all those travel teams he was a member of.

Our next door neighbor here has a son who holds the home run record at Purdue, he played a couple of years in the low minors but he’s a successful electrical engineer, I haven’t learned yet if they did the entire travel team bit but suspect it to be so.

We were a basketball school, and I loved it, and played on school teams from 5th grade through 2 years of varsity play. We were the last class before consolidation demolished our school into dust, so the coach only had 3 seniors on the varsity and made us all bench warmers, to get more experience for the players following him to the new school where he had already won the job, so my senior year was bitter, and I only scored 124 points on the varsity. Baseball, a different story, I batted 4th and played centerfield and held my own against our competition, then followed up the next summer playing on a barnstorming team for 2 summers ,playing in every southern USA pro minor league stadium we could get into, and one game in old Comiskey Park, Chicago, one night when the White Sox were in Detroit. Over 2 summers, 40% of our team signed pro minor league contracts, and I may have had a chance to be a minor leaguer but there was a little war going on, so off I went , thataway. My try-out to invitations to the Phillies and Expos minor league Florida camps never happened as I was in California in the army; my baseball hopes ended at age 19. If they would have ended at age 10 or so, I would have felt cheated and upset. The odds were greatly against me ever making the Big Leagues, I tell myself…then I remember my second cousin played for the Chicago Cubs for a year. https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-karer354/images/stencil/1280×1280/products/164784/651572/261__38532.1569777258.jpg?c=2

I didn’t even go to any games in high school, much less play. That was a guaranteed ticket to social nowhere, but I was focused on getting out of there anyway so it wasn’t a problem.

I’ve been watching todays hearing and holy moly, this is really damning for Trump and the Republicans leaders who back this guy. I think it has another hour to go, they’re taking a 10 min break.

The case is so strong already, and today they introduced more evidence that the big lie was just another scam for The Former Guy to continue fundraising. I think that’s the only way he makes money these days.

And I want proof that Bill Stepien’s wife went into labor naturally, without having it induced. Verrrry convenient!

On a lighter note, we were inspired by the concert of movie music to rewatch a couple of the movies. Jurassic Park holds up really well, maybe because it had a real story line and wasn’t just an excuse for special effects. From the reviews I’ve read of the current iteration, you’d be better off watching the original again instead of the current one.

Doesn’t hold up? The DaVinci Code. Lousy, convoluted, and way too long.

Edited to add: Deborah, if you have trouble with your CNN feed, we watched the hearings on Washington Post live.

I haven’t been able to watch the hearings, but got a great recap on the latest episode of the Amicus podcast as well as reading articles.
