It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me, or has read me for 10 minutes, that I hold no great regard for Mike Pence. I will always think of him as a haircut and an empty suit, and remember him primarily as a talk-radio host, because that’s what he was when I lived in Indiana.
He had a late morning spot on WIBC, the big talker in Indianapolis, and occasionally I would hear his show in my car in Fort Wayne, if atmospheric conditions are right and I was on the right side of town. He has described himself as “Rush Limbaugh on decaf,” but that means nothing — he was at least as far right as Limbaugh, but maybe couched his views in slightly, slightly more polite language.
That he made it to Congress was mainly a matter of name recognition, etc., and to the governorship, ditto. Indiana’s Democrats are thin on the ground, and once Evan Bayh stepped aside, that was pretty much the bench. But still, Pence barely beat — Googling… — John Gregg to win in 2012, and was on his way to defeat in 2016 when he was saved from obscurity by Donald Trump.
I will never, ever forget the images burned into my brain from early in the Trump term, of the shameless bootlicking, led by Pence, at every public appearance. How could we forget that first cabinet meeting? Sickening.
So while I am not inclined to do a 180 after all we’ve learned about the one good thing Pence did in his four years as vice president, I will say this: What a crazy-ass world we live in, when it’s saved by a boot-licking toady like him.
Yes, I just watched the Thursday hearing. Is this not the rancid cherry on the shit sundae, or what?
Eastman emailed Giuliani to ask that he be “on the pardon list, if that is still in the works,” after Herschmann warned him to get a criminal lawyer.
If this is the reputation laundry that eventually makes Pence the 2024 nominee, and he is helped into office by Trump worshippers now serving at the state level, why, wouldn’t that be ironic, eh?
It’s 91 degrees outside, what else was I going to do this afternoon? The heat is supposed to ease, somewhat, tomorrow, and even more so on Saturday, which is good-good news, if you ask me.
Then back up into the 90s next week. Ah well, it’s summer in a time of catastrophic climate change. Can’t have everything.
Sorry I’ve been scarce this week. We’re having work done on the house, and it’s…loud. Also disruptive. But I’m still here, reading comments, glad to see all your smiling faces there. Keep it up. And have a great weekend.

Oh how I remember the disruption of noise and craziness in our current (forever now) place in Chicago 5 years ago when the reno works wasn’t finished before we moved in. You have my sympathy, but can you imagine having to endure that in a place with no interior walls except bathroom and kitchen. Our solution was just to be gone from about 8 until 4 every week day. And the dust, that was awful.
I watched the hearing today while doing noiseless chores like cleaning my hairbrushes and combs. I wish I could knit, that would have been perfect. I have to admit I speak like Luttig when I have to be very careful about how and what I say. It drives LB crazy and she constantly impatiently tries to finish sentences for me, which then drives me crazy because she suggests a word I don’t mean to say and then I have to back track which is even more frustrating for her. When I listen to my husband on business zoom calls he often does the same thing, talks hesitantly and deliberately to make sure he says the right thing. But in doing so people sometimes lose the thread, I think.

Luttig reminded me of this, which I could not get out of my head. Cheney should have tried to finish his sentences. That would have livened up the hearing, although no one can surpass the original Slow Talkers of America.
It was painful trying to follow Luttig. Hard to believe he was a judge on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Someone said on-line somewhere today that Luttig has a stammer or a stutter so when he gets nervous he slows down his speech to avoid doing that. I’ve often thought that my hesitant speech issues are some kind of stutter or stammer problem, not that I stutter but sometimes I can’t get the word out and I just have to stop and wait for it make it’s way to my mouth. I have had people tell me that I seem super calm when I do that which is completely and utterly the opposite of the way I feel inside when that happens. I have been that way all of my life, so it’s not something that has come with age for me.

Jeff from the last post. My parents were taken for $40K a couple of years ago and they still answer every phone call they get on their land line. We got them caller ID. They never look at it. We set up a white list on their phone system. They complained nobody called them anymore. We went through all the people who usually called and they said yes they had called since we set it up but nobody else did. We asked who and they said they didn’t know but they used to get lots more calls. They moaned until we took it off. Dad has a geezer cell phone and knows how to use it but doesn’t. We don’t know what else to do. Anything we try, they complain about. Dad’s decided they need to move into a continuing care place, so yea for that. It isn’t going to solve any of the problems they don’t see to want solved.

I have hated Indianapolis in a general way all my life. We were much more orientated to Chicago and Detroit living in DeKalb County, while Fort Wayne was the big city where we’d go all the time. Before and after cable arrived, we could not get Indianapolis TV, accepted…but they wouldn’t even beam up a radio signal to us. They had a newspaper called The Star, but even in Fort Wayne , for years, they didn’t bring up copies, except I think Riegel’s had it on Sundays. Later, in the late 80s, that bookstore in the Maplecrest area began getting a few copies.
In sports, the local writers sometimes complained , as did the TV sports guys did, when the basketball and football ratings would come out weekly, and even if Fort Wayne and area teams were clearly better than teams nearer the Capital City, they would be considered second-class and rated lower. If Ben S. is reading this maybe he has a different opinion.
And then, of course, my class of young men were bused to the induction place for physicals and later sent there to take the one step forward and be officially in the US Army, or sometimes the US Marine Corps.
I guess I hated Indianapolis because they cut the northern quarter of the state out of even basic communication; Indianapolis was our capital only as a splash on the map. Now many years have passed but by god I still have reasons to hate Indianapolis. The Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay. A showoff pig who buys his way out of drug possession maximus and DUIs and decided to shell out millions just to say he owns Kerouac’s scroll on which he wrote “On the Road”.
The Dan Quayle shenanigans, plus the Pence legacy, sheesh. Quayle evaded armed service in Vietnam by joining well…he did this: Quayle joined the Indiana Army National Guard and served from 1969–1975, reaching the rank of sergeant. source: Wikipedia.
But…there was a mile-long waiting list to do this, I know, because this was exactly when I was drafted.
Quayle’s wife Marilyn’s father was publisher of The Indianapolis Star, if I recall. String were pulled and Dan Quayle waited about 3 seconds and yes! He was in The Guard.

As a parliamentary geek, I’m morbidly curious what would have happened in the chamber if Pence had caved, and either sent back slates and paused the certification ‘to a date certain’ let alone if he’d tried to call it for Trump. I’ve got some idea of how the latter would go, but I’m guessing some of the more procedurally astute members of the chamber would have had a plan for what motions to make if ‘the President of the Senate’ had not completed the certification process in the Jan. 6 session. ‘Point of Order’ is always a good fallback, but . . . I’m curious.

I watched the hearings yesterday. Luttig’s closing statement sent shivers up my spine. This man was one of Rafael Cruz’s mentors, as conservative as they come. For him to feel the need to say what he did is terrifying. You could see the strain, the struggle on his face, that everything he believed in and supported had come to this.
Pence is no hero. He did what he did because he knew he’d either be killed or jailed if he didn’t. He set out the kindling for 4 years, poured multiple gallons of gas on it, and set it on fire. He doesn’t get credit for calling the fire dept when he realized his house was going to burn up with his wife, kids, and dog inside.

Luttig’s conservative bona fides should speak to R’s, but the thinking person is an infinitesimal part of that party now.
These hearings have been riveting. So far I’ve been able to switch my schedule around and watch every minute. As others have said, Pence isn’t exactly a hero, he could have gone public with what TFG was planning, and maybe prevented the Insurrection. That said, I’m grateful he found his spine, if only the once.
Floriduh news of the day: DeathSantis will not recommend the Covid vaccine for under 5’s. Even worse, the state hasn’t ordered the vaccine, so parents who want their children to receive it may have difficulty finding it. Let that sink in for a bit.

I can’t believe Pence thinks he has any sort of political future. Who the hell does he think would possibly vote for him? The only value he had was as a Trump toady, and that is long gone.
“I didn’t participate in a coup” is kind of a thin line to base your whole resume around.
My mental image of Pence will forever being him pointlessly taking his water bottle off a conference table and putting it on the floor, for no other reason than that Trump had just done the same thing.

So Mitch Daniels quit his post at Purdue and Politico reports he’s planning to venture back into politics. I didn’t read the piece, but I suspect he’s contemplating a run for president again and thinks his party will welcome him as some kind of savior as it did the last time when its prospects looked bad. Of course, he’ll have to reinvent himself as a full-throated neo-fascist and not just a dog-whistler.

Ordered myself a Herman Miller Aeron chair for work and told the firm I don’t expect them to pick up the tab as I intend to keep it as my own personal property. At this point I don’t think there’s any other chair I could stand to sit in for 8 hours a day. Anyway, it lit a fire under their ass and they’re finally taking me seriously about the shitty ergonomics of my current office situation.
Dex, as regards Indianapolis, my family seldom had any reason to go there when I was growing up and I had no familiarity with it at all until I went to school at IU Bloomington. These days I have friends living there and it has the closest IKEA store so I do make it down there a couple times a year. But it remains true to its reputation as the world’s biggest hick town.

When my back blew out and I needed a better office chair, I was surprised how relatively inexpensive refurbished Aeron chairs were. I was expecting to pay $8-900 and I got one for about $300. Other than the legs being a bit scuffed up, you would never have known it wasn’t new. The company ponied up for one for the office with all the bells and whistles. I can’t say it’s any more comfortable than my standard model.

Naptown it was and is. Whenever we were planning a visit I’d look for a play or orchestra concert and never found one we wanted to attend. Fort Wayne truly has a bustling arts scene and most weekends we could have duplicated ourselves to get to everything.
I thought Purdue had chucked Daniels out; what a disappointment they didn’t.

Referring back to Jeff Gill’s post on the previous blog (completely off topic, forgiveness asked here): I had to replace my 3G phone recently and came across the Nokia 6300 ($69 + tax) which I will use only for calls and text, not data (dual SIM, so data card can just be omitted). It might be a good solution to your FIL’s issues since it is one piece (not flip) and has a little alpha-numeric pad – don’t know about your FIL’s vision/dexterity so YMMV.
It uses the KaiOS related to Linux rather than Apple or Android, is a much simpler and more energy efficient OS which lowers the overall phone cost considerably. My first cell phone was a Nokia, an indestructible lozenge that lasted years until the 2G was deprecated. I also discovered that the 2G/3G networks are still operating, but only in US rural areas now, so I might be able to sell my older phones.
I intend to research larger one-piece KaiOS phones that are 4G/5G compatible to get data access for google maps, parking meters and those QR swatches as well as more visual real estate to up my functionality while retaining the 6300 as an emergency backup.

Interesting option; thank you. Dexterity is an issue both physically & cognitively, so not sure if any option moving forward that’s not identical to what he’s used to will work . . . I watch him stare at his checkbook or a bill for ten, fifteen minutes at a time. He’s still writing most of his checks for a majority of his bills, but after a long argument over paying his second quarterly estimated state & federal taxes, I’ve picked that one up off the table. Water and gas and electric we’re watching closely; basically, he can handle anything he gets a paper billing for, but anything else that requires putting thoughts and anticipation together doesn’t work out.

What kind of phone did he have before? I’d look for something similar in appearance and then configure it for phone/text only to simplify learning and protect him from the internet. I’ve got all my marbles still, I hope, but finding a compatible, affordable phone has been difficult.
I’m not focusing on the current political topic too much because I’ve voted and voted and voted so am waiting for a better solution to occur to me. Besides living my values in my daily life.

What struck me about the 3rd hearing was the frequency with which Liz Cheney referred to Pence as “courageous”.
“If it hadn’t been for Pence’s courage, his courageous actions, etc etc” Cheney tired out the word which I suspect was afraid to be in the same sentence anyway. That’s when I thought perhaps Pence wants to make a run for President. Ugh.
Judge Luttig didn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I just thought he was maybe going a little senile. Didn’t know about the stutter.
I have to admit to being a bit impressed by Ms. Cheney. She’s going after Trump with intense focus. But I fear she’s being too logical and most of T’s constituents are just stupid. They won’t listen to her. What she really needs to prove is how Trump has systematically lied to them, asked for and received their money and spent it on his lifestyle.
T said yesterday that he never called Pence a wuss. A woman who was interviewed said he called Pence the P word. Same/same. I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears after T announced if he decides to run, he will pardon all of the Jan. 6th criminals. Outrageous! Some of his followers should study history and see what happens to all of the under-informed who blindly follow despots.
Trump is northing but a Russian oligarch pretending to be an American citizen. When will he get his giant ass expensive yacht?

The last phone I had before I started getting iPhones was a Nokia and I loved it, it was the simplest one and super well designed aesthetically which is important to me. I have saved it lo these many years because I’m emotionally attached to it. I think Nokia is a Finnish company? Or at least it was?
I bought my Aeron chair not that long after they came out, I paid $600 dollars for it, by far one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I looked it up and new ones are now are around $1,000 – $2,000 depending on the number of bells and whistles it has. Mine is still very comfortable and everything works the way it did when I bought it. If I were buying one now I’d definitely opt for a used/refurbished one. I was amazed how often corporations change out all of their office chairs at once, I learned that by working for a design firm that did a lot of churn work, churn means redesigning interior office spaces for companies that constantly grow, contract, and move locations, also updating style changes so the companies look more successful to themselves and their customers/clients.

Nokia is a Finnish company. However, when smartphones began taking over the market, they hired one of Steve Ballmer’s guys from Microsoft as CEO, and he led Nokia to choose Windows Phone as their smartphone platform instead of Android. After a few years, as Ballmer’s parting gift, Microsoft bought Nokia’s mobile phone business. Part of Satya Nadella’s cleanup job at Microsoft was writing off that purchase.
Gates is an asshole, but at least he is a very smart asshole. Ballmer is just an asshole. Microsoft is a much better company without either of them involved anymore.
My brother did the heavy lifting of getting my parents on iPhones several years ago, and they’ve adapted pretty well so far. They’re unwilling to spend money and skeptical of strangers by nature, so we don’t have that problem. The biggest issue we’re going to face is what to do when they can’t drive anymore, because they live in a rural area. They’ve been pretty pragmatic about planning so far, but when it comes down to selling and moving into town, I don’t know how they’ll cope.

When I was growing up in the South, whenever someone knocked on our door proselytizing for a religion, they were almost always Black and Jehovah’s Witnesses. There was a Mormon church in the area, but I don’t ever remember any Mormon missionaries knocking on the door. I don’t remember going to school with anybody I knew was Mormon (though I did know some Jehovah’s Witnesses).
Now, I live within an easy walk of a Mormon church, there are lots of Mormons around, and it seems like at least once a year, two “elders” who are barely shaving knock on my door eager to tell me all about Jesus and the Book of Mormon. This despite the “No soliciting” sign on my door. I swear, one of these days, I’m going to invite the boys in and sit them down and explain just how disrespectful what they’re doing feels, and how I feel every time I see some barely adult boy with a name tag calling him an Elder who wants to tell me how I should live my life.

Never had a Mormon come to my door but as Sherri said we also have had Jehovah Witnesses visit us. Especially when I was a kid, my mother would get in long involved discussions with them, then she would always come away from the door feeling very discouraged because she hadn’t made a dent in what they espoused. I had a client at Wrigley’s in Chicago who was a Jehovah’s Witness, she was African American and I remember she wasn’t allowed to participate in some holiday events that Wrigley would have for their employees and as I remember the 4th of July was one of those.
I’ve said here before that when we stayed in Moab once to visit Arches National Park a Mormon bible was in the room of the bed and breakfast we stayed in. I found it fascinating but strange.
I also worked with a couple of Mormon guys at the architectural firm where I worked in St. Louis. They were both nice guys, architects, hard workers and one of them was married to a woman who came from an important family in the Mormon church in Salt Lake City. It was a big deal apparently. My husband interviewed for a project to design a Mormon church in St. Louis but didn’t get the job. He’s an atheist so wasn’t surprised, I don’t think they asked him about his church affiliation, I don’t think that’s legal, but I could be wrong. It would have been interesting for him though. He had previously designed a guest house for a Christian Scientist college in Elsa, MO. Which he said was quite a learning experience.

Busted. Pogo and I, by Bryan coppers. Pogo sometimes has to go poop, and feral cats around my yard and neighborhood make it necessary to drive her to some field on the outskirts of town. Cops do not like seeing an old man walking his dog around here. I have been kicked out of every area around here. Tonight another very young cop , but he was nice anyway…said if I do this again he will question me again, and every time henceforth. I make sure I have a very light-reflective yellow bag visible to indicate I am going to pick up the mess.
This is my last dog for sure. I am going to try my damndest to get her schedule flipped so she can sleep at night and stop all this. Because one night we will surely encounter a mean cop.

It has rained 3 nights in a row here in Santa Fe and it’s been the kind of rain that the Navajos call Female rain, which is the best kind. It’s gentle and lasts a long time, soaking the earth in a way that helps plants grow and thrive. Male rain on the other hand is torrential and fierce with lightning and thunder. It comes in fast and is damaging. Interesting concept the Navajos have, don’t you think? The rain last night didn’t stop until almost noon. We are hoping that this is the beginning of the monsoon season and that it keeps up through the summer. But last year the monsoons started well and then petered out much sooner than normal. This is the season that gives it most of its rainfall for the whole year. Snow in the winter helps some but mostly in the mountains, the spring runoff from the snow pack helps fill the reservoirs for supplying city water.
More rain is expected later in the week. Right now the sun is shining but it’s still cool. The best condition for the plants.

The condo yard smells terrific from the wet lavender plants. What’s left of them anyway, this may be the last season we’ll get from them, but then I said that last year.

Deborah, no monsoons yet, but yesterday the sky was very dark to the southeast, and it cooled down to below 100. When I woke up this morning I noticed that it was a little wet outside like we’d had a small shower, but nothing significant. We can tell the storms are coming soon, though, the humidity is rising.
Even though we all know Pence is no hero, I think the committee is playing good guy-bad guy here and contrasting Pence’s ultimate doing the right thing with trump’s utter contempt and lawlessness in trying to overthrow the government. Whatever moves the needle public opinion-wise and for the DOJ to indict is going to be a net gain for the country.
I just learned a new to me term from a 94 year old lady who referred to an awful guy as a “skin flute”. trump is definitely a skin flute.

Andrea, they did look mildly sketchy on a quick look, but I just wanted a story on how Illinois has actually been willing to take legal action against former chief executives that didn’t have a paywall, and they qualified on that particular benchmark.

I believe skin flute has a more common meaning, and playing one is also very common.

I think that usage was approximately the same. To me skin flute means dick. Trump is dick.
