This one’s for Joody.

When I saw the minivan parked in the library fire lane (where I was parked too — fortunately, there was no fire at the moment) with two Weimaraners sitting in the front seats, it looked like a scene from William Wegman, and I crept forward for a picture.

Fay and Man Ray weren’t fooled, however, and challenged my approach:

Eh, I needed a polarizing filter, anyway.

Yep, they were giving me the business, fer shure. The driver was a big unaltered male, and they had a friend in the back seat, too. Three big dogs, one guy — no wonder he felt the need for a minivan.

That reminds me of a question I heard on the Magliozzi brothers/car talk thing on NPR a long time ago. A woman called in with a question about her Ford Aspire. One brother asked why on earth she had bought a Ford Aspire and she she said she had three dogs and she thought they would fit. A Magliozzi brother said, “The only way three dogs will fit in an Aspire is if one of them drives.”

I’m not joking. This is a man’s life at stake. I’m not dumd ebough to believe Bushevisk fon’t be;ieve they hold some moral imperative. This guy in Savammah is most likely innocent. Almost everyy that testified against him has recanted. Another says one of the eye-witnesses was the murderer.

W thinks he knows who the murderer is. He mocks her. How about the innocent shock and awe victims
you ghoulish shock and awe perpetrator? Ge’s a war criminal and so’s Cheney. There is no such thing as blowing Iraqis up and claiming it was a justified war. Pretext+murder equals murder. In what universe do these assholes get away with this?

The original attacks that were suposed to get Saddam. They just killed Iraqis indisriminately. Thousands of them. They just blew people up and didn’t give a shit who they were. I’m so proud of my country. The surge? Well pay enough. Pay those dangerous warlords to stop shooting at you. Wow. Surge. Horseshit. The evidemce is ludicrous.. There is no evidence. The eye witnesses recamted.

Who knows. I think anybody that anybody that bought into W was a moron. When I think of what kind of morons tt thos day it took skandering John Kerry, there is actually no way to forrgive Republicans. Yall did dthis to the angry beast. You all lose big time, except we all lose. Kerry is a bulldog prosecutor. Unlike osme mindless twit that believed Cheney was the real Pretzeldent, Kerry wiykd have stood up like a man and hunted down Oama Bin Laden. Or at least, he might have tried. The idea that it was police work, well, that was always the right idea you morons,

Here’s the deal. T. Boone thought he was clever to stick with W, when that was a little piece of shit and Kerry was a wartime hero, well T. Boone, you can fuck over actual voters.. You can pretend guys that can’t fly planes are heroes because they get their asses shot down, Jphn Kerry saved his buddy from being killed. Hanoi Hilton? We’ve pmly got McCain to vouch for that. He thought he had to to live up to some bixarre family dignity. Kerry thought he owed it to his country. Actually, he probably only thought he owed it to his buddy..

    T. Boone Pickens and Daddy Bush tried to paint John Kerry as some sort of anti-American. W bailed out and T. Boone is the architect of Swift Boat. He knows that’s bullshit. In 2004, Republicans vowed to do whatever it took to rob the eletorate. If you athink they didn’t steal Cuyahoga County,

t bOONE. hE’S THE BIGGEST LIAR THAT EVER LIVED.

FiveThirtyEight.com did a nice bit about my state NM:

    http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/10/road-to-270-new-mexico.html

It is absolutely nuts here. All three congressional seats and 1 of our senate seats are up for grabs. We’ve got nothing but mindless, idiotic state race political ads on. It very well could be that come eight days from now our entire delegation could be Democratic. Even though the state has more registered Ds than Rs, they tend to be socially conservative Ds with some liberal leanings. It is politically confused.

If you had a chance to vote for a very smart guy for President, you know, the guy that understood terrorism is criminal behavior and police work brings it down, who was an actual war hero, and his opponent was a barely functional idiot in thrall to an evil sonofabitch that had better things to do than serve in Vietnam and got four or five personal deferments, , who would you vote for? T Boone Pickens would Swift-boat your ass, and you really should be disenfranchised for abject stupidity.

And if the political party of the latter includes a whack-job Secretary of State that promises to deliver Ohio for the mumbledy moron President that invaded a sovereign country on evidence invented and defunked in 1998, and vanished votes on demand? Well, we keep Murrica and Newnined States (that is exactly the way the little shit pronounces it). Trash the Constitution? We doan need no steeenking Constitution.

Here’s the deal. John Kerry was a war hero, if that’s possible. Both the Bushes ran away at the possibility. Prescott just realized how muck money he could make off Jews. T Boone funded slander. He’s a somewhat larger fraud than Palin. To this day, when the Swift Boat shit is a bad joke, this scumbag stands by it and Fux insists it had a kernel of truth. Meanwhile, W just bagged service and got away with it. There is no accounting for how stupid people are.

Now Nancy’s bartender anaology makes sense. I’m big and have played bouncer a few times in life. So can someone cut off Caliban so I can scruff his neck and toss him outside. It’s pretty cold right now….
Dude, keep the rants on topic. If you want to rail about dogs, this is the time, but I’m letting the Norwiegan Elkhound loose and he even scares me if he senses fear. Run, Caliban, run.
(my mailman also has elkhounds so he is scared silly when he comes to my door. He said, “I know elkhounds.” My current dog’s dad was ill mannered from champion lines and we lived deep in bear country (in NJ, and I’m not joking). We never had bear trouble but people 1/4 mile away always did. When we moved here and Thor left his post, suddenly our old neighborhood was overrun. My old neighbor solved that woe – he bought an ELkhound.
When people start talking S*** about their rots, pits, german sheperds, I just nod and grin. Pound for pound, I’ll take a male elkhound anyday. We’re talking dogs that love to chase and kill bears (they aren’t really into elk, and NJ has no elks, except old men who get drunk and have funny hats), and they will track for 50 miles. That didn’t work too well if he got loose. Thankfully he still would fall for the car door, go bye-bye bit.

I offered to do that awhile back, no takers so I guess someone must be listening to him.

had a Walker/blue tick cross coonhound, been close to thirty years ago now, who only had three legs but would still fight coons and win, or at least pin them down till I could get there and shoot them. used to wake up in the middle of the night and hear these death matches down in the creek bed…

to “JGW” – You don’t *have* to read Caliban. I don’t (mostly) and it makes life so much easier. I recommend it highly.

Sitting right on 40 degrees latitude in Ohio, i’m officially announcing our local foliage hit peak about twenty minutes ago, 8:45 am, rising sun through the reds and green-golds and slightly curling russets.

But we get a late payment on peak from the variegated hues of the sweetgum trees that are still mainly green, going yellow on the edges, shot through with purple and maroon.

    That is all.

Speaking of fall colors, last night we went to McDonald’s for Chloe’s school’s fundraiser; the restaurant gives a portion of all the receipts for three hours to the school, and in turn dozens of families dress their children into their Halloween costumes and come eat.

The weather has been in flux lately, quite windy and rainy, and aside from all the colors of the various costumes (Chloe was a very yellow duck), when we went outside to head home, the dusky sky was broadly streaked with crimson and orange and pink, and the blue-gray clouds looked like the towering sides of a canyon in the sky.

It was beautiful – and as with all beauty, fleeting and easily missed

JGW, I have a brother who is a New Jersey Elk. Please keep your hounds away from him even though he’s deeply involved with the Republican party in his county. Where is this bear infestation in NJ? Where I used to live the local high school football team were the bears, but as far as I know they haven’t been too threatening since 1971.
I have a cat who keeps gorillas out of my backyard. I have not seen one gorilla since I’ve had him.

The northwest corner of NJ where Ny-PA-NJ meet is mountainous by east coast standards, very wooded, and rural, and Nj’s black bear population is on the rise, with all the human-bear problems that arise.
BEar proof trash cans are pretty much required, and it’s not uncommon to see them on the prowl. I once had to slam on my brakes coming down a bend on a county road for a sow and five cubs. Most likely the cubs weren’t all hers, mothers will foster and protect other cubs.
The best part about the bears is how insane the animal rights, anti Fish & Game people get. If a bear is non fearful of humans it’s classified a category one bear which means tough luck.
I used to cover tons of nonsense whenever they flirted with a bear hunt. So the first day of the first bear hunt (2003?) in decades and an idiot without a bear license guns down a cub alongside a busy road with commuters. Sad but he did the bears a favor, the hunt was not repeated.
But the bear people go around and when they see traps they try to get the bears away. One guy did time for pissing in a trap, but he was a frequent flyer for his animal rights stunts.
And Nancy, your Ted Nugent remark about the pigs a while back reminded me- Ted sent his local folks and dumped money in the bear hunt. I’ve never seen more cops at a public meeting than that one, and the bear folks still managed to vandalize a few fish & game trucks that night.

our Walker was as nice and sweet a dog as you could ever imagine, but she did have hound nature… I came home from IU in an unfamiliar car once and she got between my mother and the driveway, stood sideways & tried to push her back in the house.

while snarling and snapping and acting lethal… once she realized that was me getting out of the car it was like turning off a switch.

this dog was tough, too. she disappeared for five days once, one of the neighbors came by and said she was caught in his fence and he couldn’t get near her… she’d tried to jump the wire, gotten caught and hung by one back leg all that time. vet took it off at the hock and she was back chasing coons in a few weeks.
