Jon Carroll is making sense.

OK, so it’s self-indulgent. But when someone writes about what it’s like to be a columnist, I can identify.

Link fixed. … Ah, and a brave soul from the Sucking Orifice Organization dares to leave … his initials!

I love Jon Carroll too, now, thanks to you–but does he do anything but go on vacation anymore?

(Does he have some sort of semi-secret terminal disease that renders jokes about this unfunny?)

He does take an astonishing amount of vacation. He’s generally gone for at least a month for one of his famous world travels — which generate some of his best work — and then another week or two here and there.

But this vacation is truly epic, at least six weeks. I think he said he was driving across the country, but he could have done that eight or nine times by now. I guess it’s more of a saunter.

The people at the Chron are members of I forgot which union. They accrue so many hours of vacation per year. It’s a fairly substantial number. The number also increases with seniority. Jon Carroll has worked there for many years and has lots of seniority. Apparently he had not been taking sufficient time off over the years and had accrued a whole bunch of time which he is required to burn. Hence the extended vac. This is the story as it was presented to me. If somebody knows better, please speak up.
