The Wire, 4.3 – discuss.

Prez gets an education. Omar gets breakfast — but not the one he wanted. (“No Honey Nut?”) The Major Crimes unit gets the next best thing to finished and Carcetti gets reacquainted with his conscience. It’s “The Wire” discussion thread — episode “Home Rooms.”

I’ll go first: Even if I weren’t inclined to love this show, I don’t know how I could quit watching after that last scene. In Prez’ classroom, a girl has been slashed across the face by another girl. The attacker rages for a bit, then is swiftly disarmed by another teacher, after which she resigns herself to her fate, and curls in an angry ball against the radiators. Dukie edges close and offers her a little hand-held fan he’s been messing with. She ignores him. He puts it down next to her, a small offering. She continues to ignore him. He sits quietly next to her. He understands. They’re two wounded little animals together.

It just occurred to me, watching that, that all four of these boys are not going to make it. I think Dukie’s not going to make it.

Man, don’t say that about Dukie. That would be worse than losing Wallace.

Of course, the show didn’t get where it is by putting character above story.

I’m more worried about losing Michael…and who the hell was expecting to see Wee Bey back on TV?

BTW, I hope everybody got to see Wendell Pierce (aka Bunk) on Spike Lee’s Katrina film. Damn.

Was it freaking hysterical when Omar got next to the building to fire up a smoke, and they emptied the stash house next to him? Damn. Now he’s got some juice.

And since they renewed The Wire for a 5th and final year, we’ll get to see these boys next year as well. Amen.

Now for the big question. Where the hell is Poot?

Oh, and did you notice Ed Norris as a homicide detective? Boooom! Now the question is, who from major crimes is going to end up on the boat?

I thought Poot died in a shootout during the war last season. But I could be wrong.

God, I love this show. Dukie’s too-small, donated pink backpack. Namond’s momma shutting her fancy blue door on the poor kid. The public school principal’s prayer and sign of the cross just before the bell rings and we see the armed police officer’s holster slide through the frame. Prez paralyzed by a bunch of middle-schoolers. Randy nicking the hall passes (Prez wrongly trusts him) so he can shed his 8th grader polo for a 6th grader blue and be an entrepeneur in the school cafeteria. The grantor’s complete bookishness in going for the 18-21 crowd! All the secrets behind the plywood — like a Hollywood lot. Omar! still making ’em scatter. And Marimow (brilliant — for the fired Balt Sun editor) coming in to bring Major Crimes to its knees.

I think the boat cop will have to be the guy who caught the dead informant case. Or Bunk, but it’s hard to imagine how he’d make progress from the water. (Loved the exchange between Bunk and McNulty about things being what they seem.)

One question: Anybody catch what Omar said to his boy right before the end of the scene w/the stash on the table? Something about what you do at night and what you do in the day. Seems like Marlo said something similar about the puppy having big paws when he saw Michael at work. (Michael=Doomed). Wow.

I believe Omar said something like, “How you suppose to run with the wolves at night when all day long you’re playing with the puppies?” Meaning: A man needs a little challenge in his life.

Oh, and Lt. Marimow — hilarious. Very inside-baseball for the journalists. For those who aren’t…here’s the backgrounder.

And I’m wondering if Namond isn’t a version of Ziggy from season two. Ghetto prince given every chance, but without the strength to make it all the way. (And by “given every chance,” I mean: Given every chance to be a player in the Game. I notice how, in this family, no one expects anyone to have a law-abiding life. Drug-dealing is just what you do, and your dad, in prison, gives you advice on how to play your hand. Amazing.)

Ah — that makes sense. Thanks.

I think Michael’s fate will somehow be wrapped up in Cutty’s. And that means I think they’re both doomed.

Poot got picked up on the wire and locked up, same locale as Wee-Bey.

I’m up to ep. 9, so it’s hard for me to comment without leaving inadvertant spoilers. But, yes, Poot was locked up with much of Barksdale’s gang at the end of Season 3.

Y’all said Cutty wouldn’t make it outta season 3, too…so I’m worried, but I don’t think death is imminent.

BTW, I’m always comparing Bawlmer wif New Orleans. Here’s a Rolling Stone interview with Simon where he says “New Orleans is Baltimore, but it can carry a tune”.
