Hey, cuz.

nallforgovernor.jpg

According to John Ritter, occasional commenter here and designated Nall Family Genealogist, Loretta Nall and I are only related by marriage, and not closely. However, we have exchanged e-mail from time to time, and any Nall who introduces herself by saying, “I don’t like your congressman, Mark Souder,” well, we might as well be sisters.

Loretta is running for governor of Alabama as a Libertarian, on a drug-reform platform.

Although, as you can see from her T-shirt, she has other planks in her platform, ba dum bum. I’m telling you: The next family reunion, I want to be seated at Loretta’s table. Maybe our other cousin, Doug Nalle, will bring the wine.

(Thanks to Mitch Harper for forwarding the T-shirt pic.)

    Uh…

On behalf of quote/unquote REAL* Libertarians everywhere, let me be the first to say:

    “Great googlety moogelty!”

…and bang my head on my desk in despair.

*As opposed to the Bill Mahr Libertarians who say they are Libertarians because they want to smoke dope and give Jesus-freaks the finger with impunity… While simultaneously supporting Ralph Nader, the anti-Libertarian pro-regulation candidate.

I think Libertarians sometimes confuse themselves with Libertines, which is something altogether different.

Libertarians are opposed to government intrusion into people’s lives unless it serves the evangelical Christian agenda.

Roy Edroso over at alicublog has been tracking the peringrinations of so-called libertarians for a while now. As the smell of flop sweat increases in the GOP, look for more of these don’t-wanna-be-a-loser types to decide: Sure, I’m against abortion and stem-cell research and think gay people shouldn’t get married, but I like low taxes. I think I’ll call myself a libertarian.

Don’t know much about Loretta’s libertarianism, although she is pro-pot, so that puts her in their camp fer shure. There may be an Alabama election-law peculiarity that pushed her into the L camp, but I dunno what it is.

I hear her website (which is down) includes “a discussion of why she doesn’t wear panties.” I guess some might call that liberating, hmm?

A ‘real’ libertarian would sum up that discussion with “none a’ yer damned business!” –

but that said – I’m all in favor of full-breasted government

“Libertarians are opposed to government intrusion into people’s lives unless it serves the evangelical Christian agenda.”

    ???

I must have missed that part of the platform. Hmm. The things you miss when you don’t have knowledgeable strangers defining you and tell you what you think.

    Thanks, Alex.

All this time I thought I was a Libertarian because I believe in the limited charter of the U.S. Constitution. Sheesh. You think you know your own values, and one day you open a blog to find out that you don’t really know yourself at all.

I guess I’ll go ahead and make the jump to liberalism. That way I can adopt a new platform of compassion toward those without opportunities, respectful stewardship of the Earth’s environment, and colonization of the Planet Gurstfard 7, even if it means the extinction of the Terellian Xactnoids.

btw – that WAS a good article on Garry Trudeau. His interaction with the wounded combat veterans – indeed the way the journalist described the way the soldiers displayed their wounds as if they were medals – had a distinct echo.

And then it hit me – it was akin to The Red Badge of Courage; in fact Trudeau and Stephen Crane approach war from very similar starting points…although luckily enough (for us) Trudeau is longer-lived

After a quick e-mail to Loretta, I have found that our Ms. Nall is the seventh cousin, once removed from the Loretta’s husband. Not very close, huh? But still, just a bit more fame to decorate your life.

By the way, Loretta was very sweet and gracious in her note and made no references to her body nor her foundations.

    Loretta made MSNBC last week.
Keith Olbermann featured her t-shirt and a quick witty comment, which escapes me right now.

First nancynall dot com. Then MSNBC!

    What’s next? 60 Minutes?
