What that photo made me think of, immediately:

Probably my favorite Neil song other than Helpless.

Who needs basic black and vertical stripes when you’ve got the slimming effects of the autumn sun? Barbie’s silhouette is a tub of lard by comparison.

Getting ready for company from Chicago and it looks like it’s going to be a splendid fall weekend in the country.

Wow, talk about being up at the crack of dawn! I was sleeping in till noon because I’ve felt that tired all week. Nice photo.

I wish there was some way to put titles on youtube links instead of just showing the link. There’s no way of knowing what you’re being directed to until you get there. Dr. Wu-ho likes to throw in a lot of music video links but at work I can’t open up YouTube pages.

Today, at home, I could see that his second favorite Neil Young song is “The Loner.” I’m a big fan of Neil, too, but he has written so many great songs its hard to pick any one as by most favorite – because they would change from time to time. Ccurrently I like “Freedom” a lot for lines like “there’s another kid who’ll be cool.”

I loved this sappy film. I bet some of you did too, if for nothing else, the beautiful Volkswagen Bug, but mostly for Pookie. And Jerry.

A long walk , a video from Sherwin Sleeves, destination: the Far Away River, time: Fall. Subtopics: Bear, apple tree, serenity, reminiscing by a great story teller, if you like that sort of thing.

Dexter, I liked that movie too. I was in college when I saw it and my boyfriend had a cute little VW bug. The only good thing Liza Minnelli did in my opinion, except for Cabaret, that was OK.

I saw it at the post movie theater at Fort Ord, California, and the sadness at Pookie’s situation was magnified by a gushing rush of homesickness that hit me and I had to shake it off quickly. That was a movie for young adults like we were then.
One of the first things I did after getting home from the army was to buy a VW Bug, a black one. Also, my best pals from army days, Frank in Detroit, Bill in St. Louis, and Eric from Rochester, NY …all of us bought VW bugs and I eventually visited all of them and I rode in all those Bugs. Eric was set in a civilian career at Eastman-Kodak (his dad was a higher-up executive and “got him in”) but Eric packed up his VW and his cutie-pie chick and they drove cross country to Eugene, Oregon, where they lived happily ever-after. They stopped in to see me on the way, on their own personal Oregon Trail. Eric always had a vision, and he just acted on it.

Took 2 hours, and a couple of log out/log in cycles — but I have officially signed up for insurance on Healthcare.gov. Don’t qualify for the subsidy, but looking forward to the tax break. Also, looking forward to having insurance that is actually required to, you know, cover health care costs.

Now, to go pull up all the frozen tomato plants.

spent the day being a helper for the South Side ‘Green Machine’ marching band. The weather was – as Alex said – simply splendid….and I’m getting old!

The day began at 10 in the morning, and ended after 5 – and I was exhausted. But it was a very cool event, aside from the sheer terror

We went to our land in Abiquiu today, gorgeous weather, golden cottonwoods along the Chama River near us. We had a light picnic and then busted our butts collecting piñon wood to take back to Santa Fe for our fireplace. The fresh clear air and the exercise has me ready to turn in early tonight, after enjoying a fire first, of course. Love the smell of burning piñon.

    Beb,
The line is another kid who won’t get to go to school, won’t get to fall in love, won’t get to be cool. Hate Neil’s politics, love his music.

Joe, thanks for quoting the entire line from Freedom. That’s one of the things I like about Neil Young, he writes these lines in his songs that just capture the essence of a situation.

Just throwing out something I learned this weekend: Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Pancake and Waffle mix is really good. I expected it to be good and it exceeded my expectations.

Sunday evening blahs. I’ve had them all my life. When I was in school, I dreaded Monday morning, when I was working I dreaded Monday morning. But since I’ve been retired and loving my status why do I still get Sunday evening blahs? I think it’s a minor (very minor) form of PTSD. Not to belittle people who have really serious PTSD from combat etc.

Also, I have loved my work life through the years but even when I couldn’t wait to get back to work I’ve had Sunday evening blahs. Go figure.

Neil Young’s politics have shifted with his age. I think his brief embrace of Reagan may have been related to the all too frequent appearances of David Crosby’s mobile laboratory van on his ranch.

Maybe this is why Republicans hate his politics:

I just have Sunday evening exhaustion & nervous prostration! (My weekend is Tuesdays; I’ll have to check my feelings that night and see how they compare.)

I love Sunday evenings. I like to cook something slow all afternoon, and have a nice dinner. Tonight though we’re having a little agita since my Red Sox fan is not happy — but beans, rice, some steak, chimichurri sauce, the last tomatoes. Pulled the dead tomatoes out of the garden in the snow, piled compost in the garden beds to break down all winter. Ready to hunker down …

Interesting Charlotte, the selection of Studio Gang. She certainly has made a name for herself in Chicago. It’s about time a woman gets selected for major projects. It does not sit well with the architectural community though, not because she’s a woman, they say. Who knows?

I’m not big on death porn, but it’s an opportunity to post a decent song in a world bereft of them:

Deborah, have you been to the International Folk Art Festival in Santa Fe? Saw a feature about it this AM on CBS Sunday Morning. Looked like fun, if a bit overwhelming.
