Get-well cards.

The surgery went well, thanks to all who asked. I am already seeing a much brighter picture, although even a few hours post-op, I’m still ridiculously dilated, and it hurts to look at a laptop screen for very long.

So I’m going to eat some Wheat Thins and watch a very bad movie — “Savages.” (Oliver Stone, you magnificent hack, don’t ever change.) Sometimes, it’s the only way to recover.

Open thread, etc.

Best “eyes” rock ‘n’ roll song ever.

Best Oliver Stone movie? Salvador, which is also James Woods’ finest performance. I thought Savages decent. Blake Lively is a hopeless actor, but Benicio Del Toro, Travolta, Tim Riggins and Demian Bichir are all good in it.

Pennsylvania’s dickwad GOPer governor, the one that admitted openly that voter suppression is the main GOP strategy, he’s trailing in polls by 8 or 9%.

Savannah’s own Jack Kingston is as stupid and mean-spirited as ever. Dumbass makes Sackless Campbell seem bright.

Eyesight is a strange thing. I have glasses to correct myopia, but I don’t really need them to drive, and my prescription has not changed since my first pair of corrective lenses 50 years ago. Last time I had an eye exam, the ophthalmologist told me I’d never need to use reading glasses, based upon the fact that my nearsightedness has remained constant for so long. I’ve no idea how that works, but I’m glad I won’t go through the clown show with the reading glasses my mom and dad did for twenty years.

I wear one contact in my right eye for reading and no contact in the other eye for seeing distances. It’s called mono-vision and works OK for most things. It takes getting used to. I don’t wear the reading contact when I drive at night though, which is rarely these days.

Uncle Lar has passed. Larry Lujack was the nation’s highest paid radio personality in the early 1980s. I knew him from his long stint at WLS-AM Chicago, Radio 890. Back then it was “Radio 89”. Truly one of the greatest on-air radio jocks ever. Only 73, he did have 15 years of blissful retirement.

I am feeling bad for my wife, who lost her brother five months ago. A couple hours ago she got the call that her older sister was rushed to a Fort Wayne hospital, unresponsive, having a series of strokes tonight, doctors not hopeful, the daughter handling it well, as my wife and her younger sister are speeding over to Indiana right now to face the situation up front. I am on dogs and cat duty, and keeping the home fire burning. We have phones.

I said it was offensive. She said that is what Obama is doing to us, he has ruined the country. I said I voted for him twice and she said something about “oh, you’re one of them.” “Yes, I’m responsible,” I responded.

Really? That’s the “striking thing” about Clinton’s impeachment? At this moment?

I think the striking thing about the Clinton impeachment, even at this moment, is that a very talented President risked his presidency, his family and his reputation for a few under the desk blow jobs from an insecure intern.

  44. brian stouder said on December 19, 2013 at 11:35 am

Mark – if you think presidents acting foolishly after office hours is more “striking” than how they exercise the powers entrusted to them, then we disagree.

If you say Clinton was foolish, or his reaction to Starr’s inquiries were too-cute-by-half, or even that he squandered a chunk of his second term, we can agree.

There was even once a time when I’d have argued that the politics of that era (and WJC’s antics, at that time) in some ways were an indispensable precursor to the horrible attacks against the United States in 2001…but that’s just ‘waving the bloody shirt’. Today, to me, the lesson of that impeachment is that the USA is NOT a parliamentary system, and Republigoon attempts to convert us into one (especially given their gerrymandered faux-majority in the House of Representatives) simply will not work; and in that light, it is striking to me that they clearly haven’t given up that fantasy yet

Then, through an older friend, I found out you could get a static-y KYW out of Cleveland that was playing music we weren’t necessarily hearing in Columbus in 1965. KYW became WKYC and I listened to it religiously for a couple of years. Re: The Clinton impeachment. Vitriolic revenge for driving Milhous out of DC in disgrace. Monica volunteered for the job of springing the sting, and got a pair of kneepads from her wingnut friends at Pepperdine when she left for Washington. The portrayal of the Chubbette in the blue dress as some innocent child taken advantage of is possibly the most ludicrous aspect of the entire affair. Of course there is also the text of the carefully parsed question Clinton allegedly answered by perjuring himself. It specifically did not include fellatio in its detailed description of the sex acts about which the President was being questioned. The trap laid for Clinton was about as clever as GOPers ever get. Given the question he allegedly answered with a lie exactly as it was framed, he answered truthfully. But all those assholes that hounded him over this, like Dan “Scumbag” Burton, Newticles Gingrich and even St. Henry Of Hyde all ended up having to admit to “youthful indiscretions” of the same sort as Clinton’s. Was Clinton dumb to fall for the trap? Sure, but every single GOPer involved in managing the impeachment was guilty of similar behavior, and their hypocrisy was monumental.

As a fan of Artie’s album Angel Clare, I always thought there was a likelihood that Garfunkel was probably the main author of For Emily. Astoundingly gorgeous melody. But the “organdy” and “crinoline” and “smoky burgundy” strike me as more in tune with Art’s sensibilities than Rhymin’s. Jerry Garcia plays guitar on that album. It contains excellent renditions of Barbara Allen and of Bill Monroe’s down in the Willow Garden. The album title is a fine literary allusion, to Thomas Hardy’s best book, in my opinion.

I think it’s more of the wacky wacky mindset, and with the peeing Santa story above, it’s repeating itself: there’s a group that looks at Obama and Clinton and say “who on earth could have ever voted for this guy?” In their mind, they’e doing us a favor by trying to get rid of the mope and get a real man in there. In reality, a lot more people look at McCain and Mitt (and Dole…) and say “who on earth thought it was a good idea to run THIS guy?” And with today’s cast of characters, this story isn’t changing anytime soon.

The thrust of the thing was that chicks couldn’t get enough of a man in uniform, particularly one with a gun.

I had an opportunity to watch the smooth stylings of officer Dollar trying to chat up one of the waitresses at the bar where I worked. You don’t forget watching a master at work.

I add my good wishes to those of others for Nancy’s recovery, Julie’s sister’s continued healing, and comfort for Dexter’s family.

Ah, aging. Such joys it brings.

Best to you Dexter. Seems like a bad news day all arond. Just found out my mother-in-law’s only sister was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. We’re all getting together for my wife’s family’s annual Christmas get-together in Indy on Saturday. That woman is the glue that holds her family together. Jesus, what a shitty thing.

Dexter, I’m sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. And Bob (not Greene), I’m sorry to hear about your mother-in-law’s sister.

Anyone looking for a great read is well advised to check out Slate’s fantastic piece on Reagan’s “welfare queen.” It’s reminiscent of the kind of literary journalism that used to come out of Chicago, and it’s the kind of story that could only happen in Chicago. It’s a lengthy piece with all kinds of shocking twists and turns. Yes, the welfare queen was a real person, not just something Ronald Reagan pulled out of his ass. Spoiler alert: She was a con artist to beat all. She was a master of disguises. And she was whiter than Ronald Reagan’s ass cheeks.

I’ll second that, Alex, and I’m only halfway through that thing. It was people like her that made Royko’s job easy.

Al Goldstein was a child that never grew up in a very homely adult’s body. He never got over the sheer joy it gave him to fling poo at moralistic adults, occasionally to fairly funny effect. I always thought that if Terry Southern hadn’t thought of it first for Magic Christian, Goldstein would have pulled off Guy Grand’s revolting “free money” gambit.

The webs are awash in ignramuses bemoaning the poor treatment for Duck Daddy’s First Amendment rights. Sometimes it’s both embarrassing and depressing to contemplate the abject stupidity of our fellow Amurricans. This is not rocket science. Yeah, guy had a right to spout is loathsome opinion, and his employer had every right to shitcan his bigoted yokel ass. Actually I found his outrageous claims about how happy blappeople were in Lousyana before liberals screwed everything up with civil rights more offensive then his garden variety Santorumisms about gay people. Sounds like a guy that pals around with David Duke.

Rally good French cop show on Hulu called Spiral, and another called Braquo.

I’m shocked that some idiot from “reality” television said something idiotic in an interview. I’m further shocked that because said comments led to consequences, it stirred up the right wing persecution complex. Shocked, I say.

I thought the most interesting quote from the interview was this one:

During Phil’s darkest days, in the early 1970s, he had to flee the state of Arkansas after he badly beat up a bar owner and the guy’s wife. Kay Robertson persuaded the bar owner not to press charges in exchange for most of the Robertsons’ life savings. (“A hefty price,” he notes in his memoir.) I ask Phil if he ever repented for that, as he wants America to repent—if he ever tracked down the bar owner and his wife to apologize for the assault. He shakes his head.

“I didn’t dredge anything back up. I just put it behind me.”

Asking for forgiveness is for little people.

And I’m amazed at Bobby Jindal and Sarah Palin invoking the First Amendment as if it had anything to do with this. A&E ought to fire back that it’s exercising its Second Amendment rights—to kill off any TV character who threatens its livelihood.

So much for “reality” TV. Obviously we’re only getting the sanitized version. Maybe one day we’ll get to see a reality show featuring unvarnished bigots in all their glory—”Foul-Mouthed Fundies from Fort F*ckin’ Wayne.” I even know a family I could nominate. They move from house to house about every six months or so, never paying any rent and eventually getting evicted, but somehow they always manage to find a new chump for a landlord. Their Facebook pages are all God, guns and racist jokes. The able-bodied lady of the house is on Social Security Disability. I think they’d be a smash hit.

Great Peter O’Toole movie streaming for free. Practically as nuts as The Ruling Class, which may be the most insane movie ever made.

How is Palin so sensitive about Ole Phil’s First Amendment rights (does she read English?), when she went after Martin Bashir’s scalp for suggesting that her understanding of slavery in America was sadly lacking.

My sister-in-law passed away in Parkview Hospital, the one off I-69 north of Ft. Wayne, 90 minutes ago. I just got back…before I could park the van and get to the room she was gone. Thanks for the thoughts. She has been very ill a long time, and she spent the past fifteen years in various nursing homes.
