On balance, Trump looked like he was tap-dancing his way through, and pretty gracelessly. Hillary’s best moment was when she responded to his attacks on her looks, er rather, Stamina! Stamina! Stamina! She zinged him but good as regard both. And he responded the same way he responded to Megyn Kelly. “Well I was gonna say something really nasty but then I thought better of it …”
He’s probably tweeting it at this very moment and it will be all the rage on tomorrow’s news.

I watched. I didn’t throw anything at the TV. I even watched some talking heads on MSNBC, though when they went to the group of people in Ohio, I had to turn it off or I would throw something.
Trump was Trump, and I can’t imagine that anybody thought he looked presidential. Hillary was calm, and even did what I suggested, laughed at him. He really can’t let anything go, he has to be right about everything. He’s not even capable of pivoting away from a problem area, because he has to be right. The birther thing is just disgusting. Even aside from accusing Hillary of starting it, that he takes credit for forcing the President of the United States to produce his birth certificate is terrible. That he takes credit and is proud of it is deplorable.
This man has no business leading us.

If you hadn’t payed attention to the last 13 months, wouldn’t you be amazed that, in 2016, a nominee would say that the other nominee doesn’t “look Presidential?” Uh, because she’s a woman. And then, the folks like Kellyanne, knowing that they needed to deal with him having said that, decide to have him double down and say that he really meant that she lacks stamina? That seems like something out of the ’50s. Uh, you ARE aware that women run marathons, Fortune 500 companies and Army units these day, right Don? Hillary’s response to the stamina jab, about all the countries she’s flown to, deals she’s negotiated, and testifying for 11 hours before the Congressional kangaroo court knocked it out of the park!
Seems to me that they both largely played to their bases tonight, with the caveat that Hillary’s base actually cares about facts, and Rump’s doesn’t. Anyway, Hillary already seems to me to have enough of the logical #NeverTrump and reasonable Republican votes. No sense going after more of them. Trump managed to not ridicule disabled people nor mention rapists, so I guess he cleared the bar. He may not have lost any of his base, but his base is not nearly big enough for him to win. I just don’t see that many who haven’t liked what he’s had to say so far found anything tonight to bring them on-board. The rest of this campaign is about Hillary getting lefties, millennials and most of the rest of the Obama coalition to vote for her, because that IS a big enough group. I think she did a pretty good job of making her pitch to them. Overall, I was pretty pleased.

I watched every minute, heard every word. I suppose Trump was taken apart for his constant loud breathing/snorting. Not a peep about HRC’s Wall Street speeches that Bernie was so upset about; I guess Trump can’t criticize the text if it praises capital’s true purpose in rich folks’ eyes, keep the masses poor and invest the money so as to keep most all the dough in the little circle of capitalists. From last thread, I too have seen bald eagles, as a nest of a family was right beside the local airport runways. I saw one about 7 years ago perched on a fence post by Butler, Indiana. A friend who lives near the setting confirmed there was a nest in her woods.
I get more excited when I see an owl. On some sites I am known as Nite Owl, an old handle I started using in the 1990s online. It was 2 or 3 years ago when a few Bobcats moved to the areas around our town I saw one, one day, that was a thrill.

Lester Holt was flawless. I’m glad someone proved you can be successful even in the Age of Trump at debate moderation. He used follow-ups instead of fact-checking, which was more devastating IMHO than trying to look like you know more than the erring (or lying) candidate. He ran the risk of making Trumpsters mad by trying, in just the right measure, to direct him back to the topic or move on after time had elapsed, but didn’t push himself further than was necessary to remind the audience that it was the candidate who was breaking the rules. If he’d escalated, he’d have sounded contentious — and by his calm patience he made it even clearer how turgid the excess sounded.
And Holt didn’t interrupt Clinton because she, with great discipline, never put him in a position to do so! When Trump said “I never admitted guilt” on the housing lawsuit, I turned and said to my wife, “well, it was true after all, he took no debate prep with anyone.” Because if he’d done a single thirty minute session with anybody who knew this sort of venue would have made it clear to him he needed any answer to that well-worn topic than “I never admitted guilt.” Will the results force Trump to let Kellyanne prep him for Oct. 9? We’ll see. I doubt it.

What’s remarkable to me is the idea that, when we see and hear Trump, what we are seeing and hearing is a function of the degree to which his campaign staff has been able to manhandle him into such unusual behaviors as staying on topic, avoiding insult, and keeping the level of lying within defensible limits. On his own, he is a complete trainwreck–a mass of incoherence, fabrication, and flagrant dishonesty.
All high-level politicians, it seems, occasionally need to hear tough talk from their advisors, but Trump appears to be in soon connected thought or expression without being horsewhipped by his staff. It’s beyond imagining that he would ever be able to operate independently on the world stage without causing an international crisis or humiliating himself and us.

Jerri, I’m so sorry, and I know what you mean about a lifeline. I’ve had a couple of similar stints caregiving for my sister, and I relied on being able to go away in my mind to stay sane.
I’ve got a debate hangover, and I wasn’t playing a drinking game; I’m not used to staying up late and my mind took awhile to calm afterward. Trump irritated me every time he opened his mouth, especially when he kept interrupting. He did this all through the primaries and I was wishing that Lester Holt would call him out, or even better, cut out his mic. And did no one ever teach him about blowing his nose?

It seems like he’s more likely to go crazy at evening rally, he melted down in the second half of this debate, he usually travels to NY each night to sleep in his own bed. In classic projection, he constantly talks about stamina.

When Hamilton Chicago tickets went on sale I spent six hours online, on the phone, and on the app trying to but them with no luck. Today they released a new block and in 10 minutes I scored! It’s so bizarre that Rumpelthinskin is SO concerned about the country’s Yuge deficit, has big plans for super-upgrading the military to the Russian standards he so admires and plans on boldly and simply making America’s infrastructure great again. Yet he pretty readily admitted that he’s often paid NO federal income tax, himself, and that that makes him and his one-percenter cohorts “smart.” If a guy like him PAYS nothing to support the nation, where are we gonna get the money to do all the great things he thinks he can do? Even after his masterful chest-thumping and bullying, the Saudis and Japanese are only gonna kick in so much, after all.
He’s a rich guy who’s proud to have profited off the misfortunes of millions during the financial meltdown — “That’s called business, by the way.” — yet gives nothing back, either in taxes or charity. “Populist,” my eye.

I was talking with my friend last night after the debate about the election, and how it just shouldn’t be close, and our dismay at the racism and bigotry going on. We were also concerned about the apparent desire for an authoratarian strong man, and she mentioned the overlap between southern evangelicals and authoratarian impulses. I reminded her that I grew up in that subculture, and she laughed and said, this is probably triggering PTSD for you!
The thing is, I think she’s right to a degree.

Dorothy, I am becoming a lot less confrontational as I enter the senior years… although I did get a lot closer to it a few summers ago at another flea market, this time near Ardmore, Alabama. This redneck was selling t-shirts showing a monkey Obama biting into a watermelon… he started with the “what YOU lookin’ at?” and I came back at him, honestly thought I was gonna have to fight my way out of there but with Mrs. B along I thought better of it and left before the situation got violent.

Connie@65: A lot of non-journalists are getting hired (and underpaid and undertrained) to do work far better done by journalists. The Gatehouse Media copy-editing hub in Austin, Texas, does tons of such work for the dozens of newspaper that company owns, including, sadly, the Columbus Dispatch. They basically hire people off the street who have no clue about editing, writing headlines, writing photo captions, grammar, spelling or much of anything else, and it certainly shows.
With a story about the Cleveland Indians winning their way into the baseball playoffs, the noon news on the Columbus CBS-TV affiliate today ran this subscript: “Playoff birth”

Evangelicals flocking to Trump, as illogical as it seems, was inevitable. One, they’ve always been at the forefront of white resentment politics. Two, they don’t like women.
Both of those things were true long before abortion ever became an issue in evangelical circles.

Sherri, I’m in such a good mood having just driven back from Athens to see my son in his first college symphonic band concert I’ll be cheery and brief. The 538 chart is specifically of Evangelical Republicans – and then all the derivations and generalizations that follow, including yours, talk as if that sorted cohort is the whole.
In fact, pretty consistently some 30% of evangelicals are solidly Democratic party voters, and generalizations about evangelical Christians are about as accurate as any comment saying “all women are” or that “women are flocking to” any one trend.
Within the evangelical world there are specific traditions that are more “complementarian” than “egalitarian,” or what you would refer to as “don’t like women.” My wife and I are non-complementarian and she’s even neglected to tack my name onto hers, but we live and work and worship around lots of families and women who are very much affirming of a distinction between women’s roles and men’s in families that is the heart of the complementarian position in conservative Christianity, and I have no trouble at all with agreeing with you that it’s a misreading of the tradition, a dead end looking forward, and not a position that serves women well . . . but to say evangelicals don’t like women isn’t a statement that I think holds up. Many evangelicals confuse cultural traditions with religious essentials, and we’ve still got a long way to go. Rachel Held Evans has been doing a lot of good writing on this subject, growing up in and still living in the middle of that context (she’s from Dayton, TN, a town which should sound familiar along with Mr. Scopes, a former resident and schoolteacher).
But regardless of where you put the cutoff for “liking women” and accepting them in different roles than you’re used to, evangelicals aren’t monolithic. Hillary has an opportunity among evangelical women that I suspect her team is working hard to exploit, because Trump is not making a good impression among any religious conservatives I know unless they were already hardline culture warriors, and that’s not a working majority. It was always a vocal subgroup, even more so today. I’d look for those evangelical moms with kids who already listen to Christian rock stations mainly because they don’t want graphic content or profanity in their music — Trump’s already got them leaning back. It’s far from impossible to draw significant votes from evangelical women for Hillary.

I’m well familiar with Dayotn, TN, but if I’m not mistaken, Rachel Held Evans is now Episcopalean, having made a journey I’m familiar with. If Wikipedia is to be believed, she now attends an Episcopal church in Cleveland, TN, which is where my in-laws live.
I am aware that there are differences among evangelicals, and will confess to using that term as a shorthand for a particular brand, but I wouldn’t call them a vocal minority. I think that Southern Baptists are still the largest Protestant denomination in the country, and they are most definitely complementarian. We may have to agree to disagree over whether that constitutes not liking women, but my personal experience growing up in that particular faith tradition did not leave me with a sense that I was truly valued. And that was before the radical right turn that the denomination took, before the takeover by the hardcore conservatives.
