State of mind:
Jeebus, what a shitshow that was last night. One of the other panelists on the radio today said the debates descended down a three-step staircase to end at Depressing, and brothers and sisters, that is so true. I love how Hillary showed up in a white pantsuit, looking great, like an elder on a very advanced planet. And yet, I hate that we had to go through this ghastly election year, and that there’s more of it to come.
The host and I were chatting before we went on the air, and he marveled that debate after debate, she spent her early comments laying traps, which Trump then congenially blundered through, one by one. Which is why, as soon as I read, “he was winning until X,” I just chortle and turn the page.
I was listening to “Keepin’ it 1600” on the way home, and the guest, Kristen Soltis Anderson, a Republican pollster, was talking about her work with Republican voters. She’s been asking the “rigged election” questions, and her remarks struck me: Voters have a wide variety of interpretations of what “rigged” means. Some think the media is biased = rigged. Some think it’s more specific, i.e., that there’s widespread voter fraud. Some think something in between. So that’s where we are: We have a failure of vocabulary. Or of explanation. We don’t even speak the same fucking language. We use words like “bigly” on national television and aren’t even embarrassed by it.
Talk about depressing.
I’m cutting out for the weekend and plan to just chill, for a change. I just looked at my work schedule and see only normal-size fences for the rest of the year, not giant oxers, so that’s good.
Also, I’m going to watch “Westworld.” Have a good one yourselves.

Circleville, Ohio’s Pumpkin Show crowds are, to all indications, pretty much Trump territory. He’s gonna win Pickaway County bigly. But I still doubt he will carry the state.

“Big League” must be an expression from my generation, meaning roughly, “top of the heap”. I was surprised Thursday when listening to the radio and some thirty-somethings kept saying that Trump said “bigly”. What the hell? So I watched some videos and goddam it Trump is saying “bigly”. He’s been saying it for months. I just can’t stand to watch much of this shit-mess of 2016. I have always followed Presidential elections closely, but since Bernie was vanquished months ago, I have no enthusiasm.
My granddaughter lives in Las Vegas and attends UNLV. The debate was staged at Thomas Mack Center on-campus. I drove past it in August, helluva big arena. Very close is the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies. I doubt if Trump took a tour of the place.
Sarah, graddaughter, said she couldn’t begin to get around campus, as all the streets were shut down for blocks around. Very tight security as always. What gets me is these fucking hayseed morons going around advocating taking Hillary out…I saw one on a news clip on NBC. Why aren’t these bastards being locked up?
My wife and her friends (and millions of other Americans) like early voting. I am not criticizing this practice, but for me it takes the fun out of it. I like going to the polling place and voting like I always have. A long time ago I received a ballot in the mail…why? I did not request it. I ignored it and will again go to the polling place. What if an October surprise occurs and you are horrified that your preferred candidate is a crook or worse? You have already voted. I’ll wait until election day. Also, I know that UAW workers in Michigan always got election day off as a contractual holiday, paid. I wonder if that is history now, and they all just mail in their ballots

Yeah, I watched the Al Smith dinner on Rachel last night. Trump made a remark that Hillary hates Catholics and called her corrupt. And as Adrienne said, the crowd booed. Rachel said it was usually mostly a conservative crowd. Trump did give a couple of funny jokes, one totally at the expense of his wife, but it was a good one. Hillary was funny too, a couple of clinkers in there but Trump had those too. In the past candidates used some self deprecating humor, Hillary did that but of course Trump didn’t. Hillary had a timely (serious) ending to her speech which I thought was well done too, but I’m probably a bit prejudiced since I’m an enthusiastic supporter. I haven’t found a link yet so you’re on your own. Senator Franken gave some commentary about their deliveries of comedy on Rachel, because of obvious reasons.

As I said at the end of the last thread, regarding the Al Smith Dinner, my attention was diverted by the woman in the red dress with her boobage on display, just the next row behind where the podium was.
She absolutely could NOT stop taking off her elbow-length white gloves, then replacing them, then removing just one, and then replacing it, etc etc…the whole time texting, and then texting some more (probably saying “Is my cleavage visible now?” and “A little to the left?” etc etc)
Betcha a nickle she ends up featured on some internet thing or another

I am so fatigued by this election cycle. I wish there were a way that the entire process, from declaration to primaries to voting could last just 6 months. 18 months is just far too long. I am getting anxious about what the reaction will be when Clinton wins, as Trump is stirring up so much anger about election rigging. Of course, all the exposed racism and xenophobia are scary, too. An attorney in my office joked she’d come up with a new diagnosis: Post Trump Stress Disorder. I want to consult my DSM-V and make up criteria. I already know one: feelings of instense anxiety at the sight of Cheetos, apricots, and oranges leading to ranting about the lack of civility and general knowledge by the public.

I wore opera-length gloves as part of my Theatre Bizarre turnout, and I can testify that they are a pain. A journalist would want to be tweeting/texting through that shitshow, and they’re not conducive to that. Also, I didn’t realize until I wore them for a couple hours how much they hold heat in the body — turns out one’s hands are little radiators. After a couple hours, I took them off and carried them ’50s-style, hand held up to show I had them, but wasn’t wearing them at the moment.

As for “bigly,” WaPo favorite Gene Weingarten, a native New Yorker, is adamant that Rumpy is saying “big league,” which is a common expression to him. After the first debate, he wrote:
“This is one of the weirdest oddities of the debate, and the single area where criticism of Trump is unfounded. I have no idea why anyone is hearing ‘bigly.’ He is saying big-league, a very New York expression. (New Yorkers and Jews say ‘big league.’ Goyim like George W. The last two elections, when I went to vote, the line was going out the door, into the parking lot (it’s a big church) and nearly out onto Fairfield Road. I spent at least an hour in line. I had a blood clot in my right leg in July and the lingering effect is causing my right ankle to be swollen pretty much all the time, so no thanks, I won’t be standing in line for an hour. I voted by absentee ballot already and felt so great when I put it in the mailbox.

Dorothy, I love, love, love Judy Davis so I’ll be seeing that movie for sure. Little Bird saw a movie last night with a friend who got free tickets to see Girl Flu at the Santa Fe Film Fest, LB said it was great, about a young girl who gets her first period. Katee Sackoff who plays Vic on Longmire plays the stoner mother of the young girl. It doesn’t come out for regular release until spring but I will want to see that one too. There’s another movie called Moonlight that I read a rave review about this morning in the NYT or the New Yorker, that I also want to see. This is rare for me to want to see so many new movies. I used to be a huge movie fan and went to see them at theaters all the time. Now we mostly just buy older movies that we’ve seen before but love watching again.

I’m going to vote early on Monday if the line isn’t too long in the loop at 69 W. Washington. I could vote at Navy Pier which is closer, but I’d rather walk downtown. Our regular voting place is about a half block away, but I’d rather vote early. As I’ve said Little Bird has already voted in NM.

I have read linguists’ analysis of “bigly” vs “big league”, and it seemed convincing but whatever he meant to say in the debate, it came out “bigly” to my ear. I can be convinced otherwise with further analysis, but for the time being, I have no doubt that it was “bigly.”

FYI to anyone – if you haven’t read “The Way We Live Now” by Anthony Trollope, which I believe he wrote around 1875, that’s on the short list of things I would suggest you should stop reading this blog for until you have done so.
(I should add to that list Luke, Galatians, and Philemon, and Job if you’re willing, but I need to check with Trump on what books of the Bible he’d most commend to fellow readers to attend to.)

Never been a churchgoer or a Bible reader. I’ve been given two and don’t really know what to do with them – doesn’t feel right to trash them, can’t relate to reading them, so they’re just sitting in the clutter of my book room.
Got the first one when I graduated from high school back in ’73 – the nondenominational church in the little town where I lived gave all the graduates one whether they were members or not. Opened mine up and the chapters were bound out of order; I took that as a sign.

Hamilton, squee!!! I’ve been following this show since the 2009 White House appearance and have been a huge fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda since In the Heights. I’ve been listening to the album non-stop (Hamilton joke there) and read the Making of book, but this was still the best taste of what seeing the show will be like. It’ll have to do until next April, when we see it in Chicago–wonder how many times I can stream it until then?

Jeff, thanks for that link for the making of Borrowed Time, very interesting. I thought the animated short was extremely well done, not uplifting, as I said, but an inspiration in its quality of production. And you are correct, not for children at all.

Walking home from Trader Joe’s yesterday afternoon we saw the actor Eric Stoneman, who plays Cameron Tucker on the TV show Modern Family. I didn’t recognize him at all until some other people did and asked to take selfies with him. Then when I got home I had to Google the show to find out his name and his character’s name. I’ve seen the show barely enough times to realize who he was.

This is an apples and oranges comparison, of course. Adding a chilling bit of perspective to the rosy Presidential outlook we’ve been basking in of late, though — as recently as Oct. 11, after they’d each won their respective first playoff series, Nate Silver tweeted:
“A Chicago Cubs vs Cleveland Indians World Series is now slightly more likely than a Trump presidency.”

Those anti-Hillary ads being run during the NLCS yesterday were paid for by Future45, a SuperPAC whose donors include the Ricketts family, owners of the Cubs. That doesn’t make them unique, of course; most sports team owners are conservatives except when it comes to taking government handouts for themselves.

Mike and I went down to Cincinnati yesterday for several specific shops/restaurants. I was greatly encouraged by the large number of Clinton/Kaine yard signs all over different neighborhoods. They vastly outnumbered the Trump signs. That heartened me a good bit.

About 5 years ago the Ricketts were asking for a huge handout from the city of Chicago to upgrade Wrigleyville. Rahm was pretty negative about it and nixed it. I did some graphic design for the booklet some architecture firms put together to be involved in the redesign of the area. It was quite extensive and would have taken over a bunch of residences and restaurants etc. I think the Ricketts threatened to move to the suburbs over it. But obviously that never happened.

Pete Ricketts, a son of the Ameritrade founder, is the governor of Nebraska. His wife is a Clinton supporter. (Some interesting detail re fundraising in this article. Even in usually bright-red Nebraska, Clinton has raised twice as much as Trump.)

The whole Ricketts family, patriarch, wife, and all four children own the Cubs, with Tom Ricketts as CEO. His brother Peter is the Republican governor of Nebraska, but sister Laura is lesbian and a big Clinton supporter.
Larry Dolan, the owner of the Indians, is not a big player in political giving. He hasn’t, however, shown much indication of getting rid of the execrable Chief Wahoo.
