Trolled.

How many people are upset about the violence in Berkeley last night? For the record, I disapprove. Violence is only the answer when it’s Richard Spencer taking a … nope, not even then. That was a sucker punch, and sucker punches are cowardly. Call him out, tell him to put his hands up, and then punch him. Not upsetting.

Wednesday night, though — that was a trap. Why is this so hard to see? This is exactly what the Young Americans for Wearing Rep Ties, or whatever their name is, did in Grosse Pointe, when they invited sparking intellectual Rick Santorum to come speak at one of the high schools, and insisted it be during school hours. The administration waffled, and then it became whassamatter, don’t you believe in free speech? and Game Over for the grownups.

Milo what’s-his-name doesn’t have anything to say. He’s a troll. He styles himself as a “dangerous faggot,” goes onstage and calls Trump “daddy,” all that lame shit, and that’s his act. If you’re willing to go onstage and say women, boy they stink at math and I bet their pussies stink, too, then you’re going to get attention. But sensible people shouldn’t allow themselves to be baited so easily. When I woke up this morning, all the liberals were tweeting about the presidential insults to Mexico and Australia — I’m still stunned to write that — and the conservatives were acting like the Berkeley demonstration was the sack of Rome, and not a few scuffles and vandalism in a city most of them wouldn’t visit at gunpoint.

So yeah, I agree with this: Don’t give him what he wants.

God, this shit is exhausting. It’s all Tom & Lorenzo for the rest of the evening. Have a great weekend, all, and let’s hope the world doesn’t end before Monday.

So it’s ok to shoot blacks and scream at them to BE QUIET! when they complain about it, but not Ok to punch white trash. This is the kind of crap that has made me lose faith that Americans have any idea of history or basic decency. White, midwestern Americans anyway.

This is just an awful stance to take. My people, trashy as they were, straightened their moral spines and killed Nazis. Where in the fuck are you coming from? are you trying to normalize this shit, or are you truly this naive?

In our house we’ve tried to agree that punching Nazis is fine, but sucker punching Nazis is to be frowned upon.

And I know, I know — He-who-shall-not-be-named can use them as an excuse to impose martial law, but we might need folks on our side willing to go out and hit someone, so I’m torn. While officially opining that of course violence is bad etc … it’s hard. I was a little girl brawler. (I should learn to box like the Proprietress).

And while I’m at it, I’ve got one for trashbags Jimly pilot joe and your mild mannered fascist bastard.

My uncle flew a spitfire into a knot of fucking Nazi planes over Anzio beachhead in 1944. It was his first combat flight. The flight officer said the flak was so heavy that day they couldn’t tell if he deployed his chute. My family often wondered if he downed the plane and was killed by the Nazis on the ground. They never knew. There was no one to clear that up in white trash Naples. They were fucking NAZIS.

I am just done with this fascist-inclusive shit. It eats dicks.

Hey, somebody got shot here when Milo the Moron spoke, but everybody’s making a big deal over a little fire in Berkeley? Oops, doesn’t fit the conservative narrative, because the shooter was a trumpkin, I guess.

Meanwhile, it doesn’t really look much like the CBP is obeying those court orders, but right, violent protest is bad.

Having been disappointed by reading the opinions of many I respect who’ve relished the sucker-punching and tried to justify it, I’m pleased to see NN take this position. She’s right about the Berkeley nonsense, as well, IMHO.

Comment #1: “So it’s ok to shoot blacks and scream at them to BE QUIET!” One thing’s for sure — a straw-man like that doesn’t pack much of a punch. Why, given the overwhelmingly liberal commentariat and content here, our esteemed, MIA wordsmith chooses to fixate on Joe and, particularly, Hillary-voter Jeff (tmmo) seems kinda strange to me, but I suppose I’m naive.

You can read prior posts on this blog, you know. Search for Black Lives Matter and you’ll find the dismissal. You also might want to consider that pro-torture Republicans are not to be taken at their word when they’re trolling. Especially ones who subscribe to the thesis pulled hot from Jonah Goldberg’s arse.

And this is for “Lincoln buff” Stouder.

I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor or degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that “all men are created equal.” We now practically read it “all men are created equal, except negroes” When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read “all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.” When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty — to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy [sic].

    Lincoln despised numbnuts.

Kinda OT but the rush to depict this Yemen raid as a “failure” and pin it on the Tangerine Toddler seems careless at best. Leaving aside the larger question of whether U.S. troopers should be sneaking about the mountains of Yemen the problems that hit this raid appear to be largely on the maneuver unit (SEAL) commander, who knew that his security was blown but pushed ahead and walked his light infantry unit into an awake and alert defense.

And as an aside…WTF is it with SEALs getting waxed by making dumb tactical mistakes? Back in my heyday they goofed in Grenada and Panama and it seems the tradition continues. Maybe the frogmen need to go back to surveying beaches and blowing up underwater stuff…

We can decry violence in protests all we want and feel better for it, but the black bloc anarchists don’t care what we think. And as we can see with Muslims, you never get credit for denouncing violence done by “your side” even if it’s not your side and you denounce it vociferously. So, no, I don’t approve of the tactics of the black bloc; I’m not an anarchist. But I’m not going to spend my energy on it, because there’s nothing I can do to change anything related to it.

Oh, that New Yorker article made me giggle. Even if you don’t want to read it, click on the link and check out the lead photo. Luxury condos in a repurposed missile silo! What a brilliant scam!

I mean, it looks great: those Cold War blast doors ready to be locked shut and keep out the rampaging hordes! Except…those doors open outwards. All I need to do is steal a bus or a dump truck, back it up to those doors, and let the air out of the tires. Hope you packed enough canned tuna to last the rest of your life, Mr. Moneybags! I’m sorry–what did you say? You’d like to be let out? Of course! Bidding starts at…well, how much do you have?

Not all apocalypses are equivalent. We all plan for the little ones. If you live in a flood zone you keep a full tank of gas in your car and a go-bag. Blizzards require backup heat and a week’s worth of food in the house. If you work in Manhattan you probably keep a decent pair of walking shoes in your cube, just in case. But planning for the Fall of Civilization is a fool’s game. Are you packing a lifetime supply of prescription medications? They have a shelf life, you know. Are you packing a dentist? Impacted teeth and abscesses killed lots of people before antibiotics came along.

Missile silos were designed to keep their operators alive long enough to launch a retaliatory strike against the Soviet Union, to make Mutually Assured Destruction a certainty. They have an operational lifetime of hours. If you’re in one, and the surface is occupied not by nuclear fireballs but a more conventional opponent, all he needs is time and a shovel: after the fresh air intake gets plugged up the occupants are either crawling out or choking to death in the dark.

Sherri, I think they are paid by M-PESA. I just learned about this via a nifty podcast called 50 things that made the modern economy. They are short, just 9 minutes long, and fascinating. MPesa helped reduce corruption in Afghanistan. The supervisors used to get payment for their units in cash, but skimmed 30% off. Now the cops are getting paid via M-Pesa, and immediately saw a 30% pay increase. Sherri, I don’t know if M-Pesa will be available to you!

Also, you may have heard that the Seattle City council will vote Monday on whether or not to divest from Wells Fargo, a major investor in DAPL. Sorry if you’ve written about this already, I don’t always have time to read all the comments.

  22. Sherri said on February 3, 2017 at 1:05 pm

Yes, Judybusy, I’ve heard, but I haven’t mentioned it here. It’s likely to pass the whole council. It wouldn’t mean immediate divestment, but not renewing the contract with Wells Fargo when it expires in 2018. The measure would also require the city to consider social justice principles in choosing a bank. That’s a bit of a challenge, since there aren’t many banks that meet the capital requirements. A bill has been introduced in the state senate to create a state investment trust, a publicly owned depository for state revenue which could also be used by cities, but I’m not sure whether it has any chance of succeeding.

We saw Hidden Figures yesterday, and I give it high praise for being just as good as the book. The book itself is a fluke. The author was visiting her parents when her dad suggested she pay a call on her old Sunday School teacher, who told her about her work life at NASA, and then she started the book.

Not covered by the movie is that all these women were also active in their church and community. I was exhausted just reading it all. They were truly amazing.

How many others are also hidden figures just because white men were writing history?

We are seeing Hidden Figures with my niece and her BF on Thursday. Really looking forward to it, and it sounds as if I’ll have to read the book, too. It reminds of the movie The Sapphires. When you read the life histories of the women involved, they continued to work for decades to improve the health and welfare of indigenous peoples in Australia.

Now on my Kindle: The Signal and the Noise by 538 guy Nate Silver. It’s all about getting the best conclusions from data. His writing style is quite conversational, and I’m looking forward to it. I just finished a YA trilogy called Chaos Walking. Wow, just full of themes so pertinent to our times. I highly recommend all three books.

One of the interesting stories about the Women’s March the day after Trump’s ascension was that (supposedly) there no arrests. Hundreds of thousands of people marching in protests and no troublemakers. The protest in Berkeley, because it ended up on a riot changed the story from a protest of professional hate-monger Milo Y. to a question on the limits of public assembly (a first amendment right). So the people who thought they were symbolically punching Milo Y. in the face ended up making a martyr of him. Which was not what they had set out to do. Unless that is exactly what they had set out to do. Robert Reich makes a good argument that comments on Breitbart.com before the speech suggest that maybe the riot was organized by Breitbart precisely to achieve the results it did. You know how it is with Republican projection. They’re always talking about False Flag operations probably because they would do them if they can. All of which is to say what the Mistress of this Site has already said. Nonviolent demonstrations get their message into the news. Violent demonstrations only alarms and scare people.

Postulating the Berkeley rioters as false flag operators is working too hard. They were anarchists, and they’re not an unusual feature of west coast protests. Blaming them on the left or the right is missing the point; they’re into destruction.

Of course there were no arrests in the Women’s March. Police don’t treat middle class white women like they don’t belong on the streets. They don’t get nervous, everybody is comfortable, situations don’t escalate.

I don’t think the situation in Berkeley helped anything, but let’s keep a little perspective. How many of you know there was protestors at UC Davis overwhelmed barricades ad forced cancellation of Milo’s speech? Or that someone was shot in Seattle when he was speaking at UW? The reason you know about Berkeley is that there was a fire, and fire provides good visuals. Sure, the College Republicans are trying to provoke something that will make news that will go national like that, and given enough opportunity, they did. But when you consider the number of protests that have been going on since trump was elected that have been peaceful, not just the Women’s March, focusing on anarchists and talking about traps doesn’t make sense. It’s not a trap for anarchists; they want it just as much as Milo and the College Republicans do, if not more.

I agree, Shirley. There was an article about “black bloc” protestors in the Post last week. They aren’t worth worrying about.

One of my FB friends had this to say:

I hate to complain about the rioting in Berkeley, but I think we can all agree it was very poor quality rioting — 1 arrest, 2 minor injuries and $100,000 in damage. I mean, really, that wouldn’t even make the Top 10 of Ohio State football riots. In 2002, when the Buckeyes qualified for a championship game, 70 people were arrested, 20 cars destroyed and more than 100 fires burned through the night. Those students care!

I hate to impose quotas, but it seems to me for a nationally broadcast college event to advance from “disturbance” to “riot,” these targets must be met:
    * 10 arrests (minimum five students).
    * 4 injuries (two recorded by iPhone 6 or better).
    * 10 cars destroyed (or one police car).

I don’t think these goals are hard to achieve. We’ve done it many times in the past. We all must do our part in making America great again.

I read that “New Yorker” survivalist piece last week and thought it was kinda fun to read, but BigHank makes some swell points. As for the dentist, though, the missile silo guy DOES proudly state: “we’ve got two doctors and a dentist.” Eyesight? Why, that’s why the first guy mentioned in the article got laser eye surgery. All in all, I would much prefer the New Zealand route to the middle-of-Kansas underground silo, if I were a nutty billionaire.

Pilot Joe may be pleased to hear that they haven’t forgotten about their flight crews: “More and more were saying, ‘You’ve got to have a private plane. You have to assure that the pilot’s family will be taken care of, too. They have to be on the plane.'”

Seems to me that these folks have the same problem as a run-of-the-mill investor trying to time the market. How do you make sure to stick with your normal, “screw everybody else, moneymoneymoney for me” business model and regular life in order to extract the maximum amount of lucre, yet still be sure to “get out” before the shit hits the fan? And, in the event of a nuclear exchange, what makes them think they’ll have time to get ANYWHERE?

Regarding Coozledad, I like that bit that Abe wrote to his friend, also; and as with so much Lincoln thought about and addressed, it remains true and resonant with 2017 America.

I think his Second Inaugural is pretty much the pinnacle of political and moral clarity, when the United States was enduring the greatest existential threat it ever had (and, hopefully, ever WILL have)…and this lesser-known little boxed-up bit of Lincolnia from before the battle of Anietam (the bloodiest single day in US history) examines the same puzzle that his 2nd Inaugural address outlines, two years later –

    https://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/meditat.htm

The will of God prevails. In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, and one must be, wrong. God cannot be for and against the same thing at the same time. In the present civil war it is quite possible that God’s purpose is something different from the purpose of either party — and yet the human instrumentalities, working just as they do, are of the best adaptation to effect His purpose. I am almost ready to say that this is probably true — that God wills this contest, and wills that it shall not end yet. By his mere great power, on the minds of the now contestants, He could have either saved or destroyed the Union without a human contest. Yet the contest began. And, having begun He could give the final victory to either side any day. Yet the contest proceeds.

Were we God-forsaken, then? Or, did the horrible butchery serve some end?

I think Lincoln was a “scoffer”, but maybe not. If he believed in God, he certainly didn’t have to LIKE what ol’ G-1 was subjecting the United States to, in those terrible days

The Sandy Hook deniers are amazing. Pretty sure the conspiracy guy I used to work with thinks that was faked, just like the Miracle on the Hudson, and the whole “Let’s roll” Flight 93 thing. The number of people who would have to be paid off to keep quiet is unreal. But somehow, more believable than a nut with a gun…

In his first week in office, he was giving the finger to our Mexican allies with one hand while slamming the front door to 134 million Muslims with the other. America has gone full bore, balls flapping, off the rails and into the ditch, where it sits upside down in a shallow muddy creek, engine howling, wheels spinning uselessly.
Only 207 weeks left to go…

On Feb 12th there’s going to be a mass moon-in at the Trump tower in Chicago. I won’t be in town then, but if I was, I’d definitely go and get photos, I wouldn’t participate but it would be a hoot to see. 4pm is supposed to be the time to drop drawers on that day. It’s to protest that our corrupt, minority president won’t reveal his tax documents. So far 400 people on Facebook have committed to do it and another 1,200 say they’re interested.

Had a very 20-teens meeting with a couple of millennials on Friday, at a hot chicken place near work, one of them had a laptop open the whole time… they mentioned a popular music venue, it’s a lot more in their world that mine but I have been there once.

    “Oh, who’d you see?”

    “Robin Trower.”

(blank look and literally about three seconds of one-handed Googling)

“Whoa! He looks like Bernie Sanders shredding!”

    Well, actually, he does…

Excellent cartoon. Here’s hoping that it’s true, that the supposedly patriotic Republicans don’t abandon the rule of law, as Il Douche seems to be hoping for, the way they’ve abandoned most of their principles in his wake.

BTW, seeing Nancy’s title for the current post, Trolled, every time I stop by — it’s just such a fitting multi-purpose descriptor for so much of what’s going on these days. In a future one-volume history of the U. S., seems like that would be a swell chapter heading for this administration.

She looked at me with a blank look, I think she was forty-something. This getting old stuff leaves you with references that mean little to most of your audience.

Dave, I’m impressed you could find a round pair. Around here, I get “no, people ask for round ones but we don’t carry ’em”… wearing rimless rectangles from Wal-Mart right now, our vision plan covers frames but only a little of the glass.

David C, what is this ritual? I refuse to watch the Super Bowl. Although I will admit that someone played one of the commercials for me on their phone yesterday and I failed to recognize Peter Fonda.

She will look like a fool, the left will look foolish, she will provide more ammo for the right, and Mr Trump will still be our president Monday morning and Tuesday morning and every day until at least the next inauguration, and if you don’t figure out that the way a lot of you are acting and what your saying, was the biggest reason he was elected he will be our president for 4 more years after that.

Joe, I’m standing up for what I believe in. What are you doing?

Lady GaGa didn’t do anything Satanic or anti-trump, other than perhaps perform her song “Born This Way”, which the right wingers hate. The immigrant haters can’t be happy with a number of the commercials, though. The Budweiser commercial has already made its way around the internet, but the 84Lumber as was pretty provocative, and just teased the entire ad. The full ad ran on journey84.com, which couldn’t handle the load for w while after the ad ran.

Coca-Cola, Honda, and AirBnb all ran ads focused on celebrating diversity so far in the first half.
