But – we see how well he conforms with the emoluments clause, in the part of the United States Constitution that they wrote with quill pens….so what good would any law that Congress might pass do? Little Bird is having another round of surgery on May 3rd, in the effort to try to get this all done before she loses coverage. I won’t be there to help her out this time, but she has some wonderful friends lined up to help which makes me feel better.
As for me 3 Drs have now told me I need surgery, but I’m holding out to hear what my PT says later this afternoon. It will probably be next week if it’s a go, I will call the neurosurgeon in the morning either way. The good news is that the surgery is the least serious of all spinal surgeries, out patient and all of that.

Too much money in too few hands chasing unattainable returns. It can’t be sustainable, but what do I know?
I do know a friend who needed to rent an apartment in Redmond because of a divorce just told me that she was finally able to rent a one bedroom loft for $2400/month. Meanwhile, people who live I. Single family houses they’ve lived in for 20 years are convinced that all the apartments being built in Redmond are sitting empty, and we should stop building.

Wow, Sherri, a one bedroom in Redmond for $2,400 is pricey even for Chicago standards. We had rented an apartment for Little Bird in Chicago in the building next door to us (one of the Mies buildings on Lake Shore Drive) and it was about $1,750 for a one bedroom. That was 5 years ago when it was that rate, she lived there for about 9 years and the rent went up about $50 each year so that would make it about $2,000 now. My husband’s brother lives in Bellvue, WA and he and his new wife are tearing down their current house (it was his, kind of a ramshackle little cottage) and my husband is designing a new house for them on the same property because they do have a great location on a lake. My Brother-in Law wants to have it built for $150sf and my husband has been having a hard time convincing him that it can’t be done for that. Even if it’s concrete and plywood it can’t be done, and of course they want nice materials with lots of glass and sf. The Seattle area is expensive for sure.

If your brother-in-law doubles that number, he might be close. If they’re on Lake Washington, the land alone might easily be worth over $1 million, depending on the size of the lot; a large lot would be considerably more than that.
Redmond has more jobs than people, thanks largely to Microsoft, and the tech companies here are hiring. Puget Sound seems to have become the center of development for cloud software, so all of the companies that do cloud development have substantial presences up here, and growing. Amazon has exploded in growth, Google, Facebook, and Apple have all come up here, and Oracle apparently just opened an office up here somewhere, because they’ve been poaching cloud guys from Microsoft.
That makes housing affordability challenging, and we have substantial homelessness issues. We’re not the Bay Area, and I don’t think we’ll become the Bay Area, because there is a more proactive, regional approach here. Washington passed an Urban Growth Management Act back in the 90s that restricted sprawl, and forces cities to accept certain growth targets. That doesn’t mean some don’t drag their feet; Redmond did under the previous mayor. But there is a stronger sense of regional cooperation here.
Nevertheless, we obviously haven’t kept up with the demand for housing.

Crazy Cat Lady, I had the same thought, about how cold it would be and also if there was an accident she would have some mighty skin abrasion. My husband used to have a large touring BMW motorcycle that I used to ride on the back of, always in full leathers, helmet and boots. If it’s the slightest bit cold, when you’re on a moving motorcycle it’s magnified by a lot. I had a vest that I’d wear under my leather jacket that plugged in to the bike for heat.

It looks like Tuesday, the 25th is surgery day for me. I’m relieved that it’s sooner rather than later. I had a scare last night, my right hip started hurting and I was afraid I was exhibiting bilateral sciatica which is more rare and can mean some pretty serious stuff is going on. It went away and I think now that it was just sore from the fact that my gait has changed all around and various muscles and such are being used in ways they’re not used to. I spent about 2 hours googling bilateral sciatica and freaking out. It will be good to get this over with and if it turns out after surgery that my foot drop is indeed permanent, at least I’ll know and can plan my life with that in mind.

Chaffetz was anticipating an opportunity to have his face on TV as he led one investigation after another of the Clinton administration. The responsibility of being the chair of the government oversight committee in the Trump administration is not as much fun as he expected to be having.
I think the rational explanation for his departure is the most likely: His position in the House is not working out as he hoped. Washington politicians are unpopular. If he leaves before the 2018 election, he has time to position himself for the 2020 gubernatorial election in Utah, which he has previously expressed interest in doing. Reportedly, he has been buying up the web addresses that would be needed for such a campaign.

2400 for an apartment here in LA won’t get you much. My son and his roommate pay that and they live in a pretty crappy apartment. My mortgage and the attached monthly insurance and property tax payment is barely 2k. It’s still hard to get mortgage here so rentals are very expensive.

I actually ran in a naked 5k at turtle creek resort just north of Coldwater Mich some years back, it was clothing optional, wore sunglasses, and a hat, lots of total nude runners, after a few minutes of being there it wasn’t that big a deal, sorta natural in a way.
You did want to pay attention to where you sat.
Still have the t-shirt, kinda strange to give away clothes at a nudist colony though.

I wasn’t able to make it to the March for Science in Chicago this morning. I made it about halfway there and then realized my foot wasn’t going to cooperate. I hope it made a big splash, beautiful weather for it.
It looks like Little Bird will be heading to Chicago tomorrow to help out with my surgery recovery etc. It was a last minute thought, it didn’t occur to us until this afternoon. This coming week is about the most important one for my husband’s teaching duties. His students give their final project presentations on Friday and it’s a busy week for him. Since my surgery was unexpected this quick, we were scrambling to try to figure out how to cope. The irony is that about 5 days after she returns to Santa Fe after helping me out, she has surgery herself, and I can’t be there. She will have great friends help her though, I’m so thankful. Crazy.

Raining hard here in Nashville and has been for awhile, Earth Day observance was cancelled and the river out back is getting near flood stage. 13.68 right now on the nearest gauge to us, forecast high of 19.5 later this evening, minor flood stage is 20 and back when our house got flooded in 2010 the high was 33-something… which is misleading because the gauge is under a highway bridge and the water was running chest deep over the bridge deck.
Mrs. B and I continue to look for a rescue kitten. Thought we had one lined up today with a local rescue group… $49.99 adoption fee was reasonable but they also require that you enroll in a year-long maintenance program with a vet across the street, all of that added up to $565 and some which was a little too much for us. The local shelter and humane assn. keep saying they’ll have some in a couple of weeks, we’ll see how that goes.

Flew some people up from Detroit that just purchased 500 acres behind their house on torch lake, they have declared it a conservation habitat not to be developed, flew them down the torch lake shore line over the water at 500ft so,they could really see what they had purchased, I think that must have cost a few bucks.
This area is definitely high rent.

Sounds like a lot of planning went into it. I think it’s terrific that they included kids with real achievements and big plans. saw some video this AM of the young African American girl who aspires to be an astronaut. She was very sharp and confident and seemed to be having a lot of fun.
basset, I am astonished that you are having trouble finding a rescue kitten. I thought kittens needing homes were everywhere. A modest contribution to a shelter seems reasonable, but hundreds of dollars for likely unnecessary veterinary care sounds like a racket. Cat owners, does a year of care for a healthy animal cost that much?

No, a year of care for a healthy animal does not cost nearly that much. Mrs. B is a certified vet tech and has been since the late 70s, she kept up her license even after retraining and transitioning to humans so we have a good line on that situation… it is indeed a racket. Would have been well over $600 after we got the cat spayed.
Lots of rescue cats around but not kittens, the shelters keep telling us “there’ll be some in a couple weeks.”

Basset, I wish you could send that rain down to Orlando and vicinity, where they’re in the middle of a drought and having fires. Our kids will be okay but many others aren’t.
And I’m amazed both at the cost and unavailability of kittens. At the shelter here it’s name your own cost. I’ve been watching online since my mother has decided it’s time for a new cat too, only she’s looking for a senior cat like her. She’s got her name in at the vet and is hoping to rescue a cat that might have gotten put down when its owner died or went to a nursing home. I’m sure we’ll find one soon.

I’ve adopted three cats from a shelter and I’ve never heard of a vet maintenance program–although kittens can be surprising delicate, so I can see the reasoning here. At the shelter I go to, the Tree House in Chicago, they do ask if you can afford at least $500 in vet costs per year if necessary. And frankly costs can add up quickly, so I think that is a fair question. I just had to take my cat to the vet for a pretty basic urinary tract infection and it ended up costing $500 for two visits–the initial one, which included the exam, a urinalysis, and medication, and then the followup for a urine culture to make sure the infection was gone. I could have skipped the followup, but figured it could have ended costing me more money if the infection came back.
With my last cat, it ended up costing me about $2500 to eventually find out he had FIV and the most humane thing to do was to put him to sleep. You always think you’re not going to spend a lot, but when your pet is in distress and you don’t know what is wrong, what can you do?

When we were looking for our new kitten, we looked at a some of the private cat rescue places. I think child adoption agencies have fewer rules and regulations. One had a vet maintenance, which was around $400. Another had monthly, unannounced home visits for a year. We finally found our guy at the shelter where they only checked with our vet to see if we got our other cats vaccinations. They were OK with us even though we didn’t vaccinate the cat we had recently put to sleep because he had bad autoimmune problems and reacted badly to the shots. I know the private places hearts are in the right place, but their obsessiveness is getting in the way of their goals.

We did dog rescue for many years and used to make home visits before adopting one out but I had never heard of maintenance plans or unannounced home visits.

Jill is from Glenview? Two of my best buds grew up in Glenview in the subdivision right behind the Swedenborgian Institute. Both also attended Loyola Academy and became sworn atheists.
Well, my 89-year-old mother has taken to watching Rachel Maddow and is wildly optimistic that the fourth estate is going to bring Trump down. I don’t have the heart to tell her that she’s watching the liberal equivalent of Fox, but better that I suppose. I have friends who’ve lost their parents to Bill O’Reilly. Maybe now that he’s gone, they’ll get to spend some quality time together again.
