I see you guys pounced on the Carroll story, as I figured you would. I wish I could say I was surprised by the reaction, but I’m not, not at this point, anyway. And the reaction? At least on social media, it boils down to a few main themes:
1) It’s entirely made up by a crazy woman to sell books, I guess because it’s so much fun to interrupt your career as a successful writer to have people sending you death threats.
2) It never happened because she’s so old and ugly. That it happened 20 years ago is still incomprehensible to these people, because she was 52 at the time, and 52? OMG gross, etc. That was even older than Trump at the time, and anyway…
3) …he has a type, and you’re not it, you crazy lying attention-starved crone. That E. Jean Carroll was once young and lovely, and middle-aged and still lovely, is too hard for them to understand, so they have to default to her not being a Trump Type, i.e., Melania/Ivanka/Lara/Kimberly Guilfoyle/Hope Hicks, et al, i.e., long legs and big fake tits and barrel-curled hair.
4) Maybe something happened, but not like that. This last was a one-off, admittedly; I read one comment from an incel who suggested that what really happened was, she actually tried on the lingerie and modeled it for him, capping it off with “probably the last time she was able to have natural lubrication,” which is how I know this guy must be an incel.
5) I’ve been to Bergdorf Goodman, and based on this knowledge I am certain there is no way they could have been alone in the lingerie department. I imagine these people are the ones who examine satellite images of FEMA death camps and blueprints of Comet Ping Pong to find the hidden child-trafficking sex dens.
6) Finally, where’s the evidence, bitch? Because of course a department store keeps tapes — and they would have been tapes, then — of its fitting-room cameras for 20-plus years. And so on.
For the record, I believe her. Because:
1) This fits a pattern, well-established by now and testified to by a couple dozen women — the abrupt push against a wall, the forceful kissing, the fumbling.
2) He grabbed her you-know-what. He’s said he likes to do that.
3) He’s impressed by people who are on TV; that’s how he recognized her.
4) He told her, “you’re in good shape,” more or less precisely what he told the French first lady on one of their meetings. It seems to be how he expresses amazement that a woman older than the man she’s with might actually be appealing.
As for her old-ass looks — ooh, gross! a woman over FIFTY? — not only is E. Jean Carroll still quite striking, in her youth she was — and I have this on good authority — an absolute knockout. Tall, slim, beautiful.
You know what? Fuck this guy, and fuck all the guys who defend him, and then set fire to the whole pile of them. The fat between their ears should make for a nice blaze. Reading that article ruined my Friday afternoon. I was in a bad mood for hours. A beautiful young girl got on the #31 a few stops after me that morning, and I got to watch the so-called male gaze, as many turned to look at her as she passed. That’s never a good feeling to be on the opposite end of, and not much fun to watch. I know men will always look — it’s their nature — but it’s one thing to shift your eyes, and quite another to turn your head and bug out your eyes like something in a Tex Avery cartoon. Practice the first kind.
Palate-cleanser: I got my hair cut this weekend, and as I came in, a man was checking out with two exquisitely groomed standard poodles, both white. Neither had the full Westminster Kennel Club clip with the strategically placed little balls, but they looked like they got their hair did about every five minutes. I petted one, and he left. Asked my stylist what-the, as the salon only handles human heads. She said he comes in every few weeks with both dogs. For a pedicure, or rather, to have their nails painted. No, I didn’t notice the color.
I’m reading a wonderful novel now, too — “Fleishman is in Trouble,” by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, an NYT magazine staff writer, and one of those bylines I always turn to with pleasure. It’s fantastic, but I’m not done yet. A fuller review when I am, but if you’re looking for something to read on vacation, you won’t be disappointed.
It’s been a lovely weekend, but it’s coming to an end. Time to start thinking about children in concentration camps again. Not to bum you out.

The E. Jean Carroll story rings so true to me, of course he did it. Even Kellyanne’s husband believes it’s true.
I finished reading Patchett’s State of Wonder and Suzanne hit the nail on the head about Patchett, there were parts that can only be described as preposterous. I did manage to read it all but I don’t think I’ll be reading anymore Patchett books.
I’m looking for a good book to read now, I’m going to look into Nancy’s recommendation. I leave NM a week from Tuesday for first Chicago then France so I need something to carry me through the airports and flights.

A couple of years ago, I was in a department store, Carson’s maybe. I saw no one. No clerk, no other shoppers, no one. Went in the dressing room, tried on clothes, and left the dressing room. Never saw anyone. So, her story is completely believable to me.

Since I already weighed in on the Carroll story, I’ll offer a Netflix recommendation, simply titled “Locked Up”. It’s dubbed over espanol, but easy to follow. It’s really damn intense, really good. Women inmates, a harder case on these women than “Orange is the New Black” gave us. This series is a hair-raiser I’d say if I had just one hair on my noggin, which I don’t. 🙂 Oh, yeah, guess what? The hard rain is back after a lovely weekend. And …another murder here, just 0.8 mile from my home, a beating in a motel room, beat to death. We seem to get 2, 3 a year here.

In the WaPo today there’s an item on the Iran debacle that compares Trump to an arsonist who takes credit for putting out his own fires. I’ve started a new E book, “Code Name: Lise”. It’s the true story of the most decorated female spy in WWII. I heard a review of it somewhere and the reviewer convinced me it was going to be a wonderful read. If I could just put down the knitting and quilting projects long enough to read I’d be able to get through a book. I’m also directing a play that was one of the six selected for a new works festival in Dayton. We open the festival and only do one performance. My cast is working hard and I’m really hoping to do a good job for my first directing job here. This gig is not for any financial gain – it’s just a nice way to fill my evenings. I haven’t directed in about 6 or 7 years so this feels good to be in charge of a show, especially a brand new play.
I hope the worst is behind us for all the sickening things Dumpy says or does, but knowing what I know, I’m sure there are lots of sh** stories that are ahead of us, the least of which is the potential for war with Iran. I don’t care what this makes me look like – I fully confess to regularly hoping that the Dumpster Fire in the White House gets a fatal disease and succumbs rapidly. Or it might be kind of exciting if Melanoma picks up a kitchen knife and sends him to his demise via the back staircase. As long as he’s not breathing anymore, I don’t give a damn how he attains that status.
That ought to get ol’ Pilot Joe frothing at the mouth, eh?!

Basset, without looking it up, is this book about Jimmy Nicol, who drummed for the Beatles when Ringo took sick in Australia? I thought that he was drumming for them for only one show and then was never heard from again. I took that to mean artistically, so to speak, not literally.
If Trump dropped dead, we’d get Pence, who I thoroughly dislike but he’s not a dumpster fire. He’s already shown is what he truly is, though, as he looks on admiringly at whatever ridiculous thing Trump is saying.

Just did some cipherin’ related to that tour, somebody check my numbers on this:
the book includes a couple different accounts of what the Beatles paid Jimmie Nicol, one was pretty widely discredited (£2500/show and the same for a signing bonus) and the other comes from what he told an English newspaper in 65 and one other source, £500 and expenses for the whole (short) trip.
So… using the Bank of England’s online inflation calculator, looks like that works out to £9953.41 today. Divide by eight shows, £1244.125 a performance in current pounds. US govt. exchange rate calculator says that’s equivalent to $1585.08… good money and a lot of drummers would love to be making that wage but it doesn’t seem like much for the biggest band in the world. (Who would that be today?) They did give him a gold watch, though.

Just finished “Hitler’s Girls: Doves amongst Eagles,” an account of how girls and young women were indoctrinated during the Hitler years… organizations were roughly equivalent to Brownies, Girl Scouts, and high school in age, and motherhood was the greatest goal. Two, four, or six children would get you a medal, eight a medal and a meet & greet with the Fuhrer.

I did the calculation the other way around, Basset. I did the exchange rate in 1965 first (2.8GBP/1USD (fixed exchange rate at the time)) and put that through the US inflation calculator and came up with $11,382. So both are in the ballpark. I think the fixed rate messes up the inflation calculations.

Nothing is going to change the nature of the codswallop in the White House. He was born an asshole. He was raised an asshole. And he has lived his entire ugly existence as an asshole. I prefer to see him crushed in the 2020 election. . .I mean like McGovern level crushed. It’s unlikely since his cult followers will remain faithful to him regardless and Republican gerrymandering, voter suppression and other dirty tricks will effectively keep a substantial number of voters from the polls. But for a man who defines his entire existence as “winning,” being turned out by the election would sting worse than getting spray tan in his eye.

And George McGovern was the most competent , most honest candidate ever. Thirty years later his equal, Senator Paul Wellstone, died when pilots fucked up and the goddam plane crashed. Point is, nobody in the world should be surprised when the electoral college installs ass-clowns like Ronald Fucking Reagan and Trump into office. 🙁

Media Matters had a feature on how all the major newspapers ignored her story. There is something shameful about that. Elsewhere it was suggested that her story was ignored because she didn’t retail it the New York Times first. The Times reporters felt miffed by that so they ignored it, and all the other newspaper followed suite. if true this is a horrible blackeye to journalism. That I can believe this theory suggests how corrupt mainstream journalism has become.
Point 3’s “She’s not my type.” sounds familiar, like Trump has used it before to disparage a woman making a complaint against him. I think any woman who offends him becomes a “nasty woman” or mean, or having blood come out of her whatever.
Finally you have to ask, did we almost go to war against Iran just so Trump could keep her story out of the newspapers?

I vaguely remembered the Jimmie Nicol story from way back in high school when I read Hunter Davies ‘68 book, ‘The Beatles’. Then was reminded of it a couple of years ago when Tom Hanks brought it up during a Fresh Air interview, tying it in with a story about ‘That Thing You Do!’. Basset, Nicol claims he was indeed paid the £2500 per show, plus that signing bonus, according to a 2005 interview in this link. He did ten shows starting in the NeDenmark and finishing in Australia. Some great little tidbits in here about the tour and what happened after. I wondered how Pete Best felt about all this.

I am reading Jared Yates Sexton’s book The Man They Wanted Me to Be. Sexton grew up in Indiana, raised by & around working class whites and their idea of masculinity. Every politician needs to read this. Every one. One quote sums it up: “Donald Trump’s rise to power was paved with tragic misunderstanding and the resulting anger and frustration. Men refusing to see the patriarchy for what it was and men completely unaware of the patriarchy’s existence found a fresh persona and accompanying political movement to reinforce their delusion. Occasionally I get “schooled” about things that would never have occurred to me, like just recently the color of my disposable cigarette lighter. bassett, I took a look at the Amazon site, you’ll have to tell me if the book is worth $10. Our niece just self-published and I did buy that one although I’m not recommending it yet since I haven’t read it. I’m saving it for our vacation; it looks like a good plane read.

You know I feel (sort of) bad that I said I wish him dead. But it’s the desperation I feel at the way the US is seen in the eyes of the world these days, and all the nasty stuff he says and does, that makes me feel that way. I wish I could make myself feel differently. It seems like that’s the best and fastest way to get relief from him – to wish him dead. But like some of you so aptly said it – seeing him defeated soundly and vehemently in November 2020 will be very satisfying. I can wait. And it will be even sweeter if the state of New York brings him up on tax evasion charges that he can’t wiggle out of. Maybe I’ll stop wishing him dead and instead wish that some responsible person will leak his taxes and any other damaging and irrefutable evidence of his crookedness. Yeah, that’s the ticket. I was ready to pull the plants out early in the spring because they did not look good, I’m so glad I didn’t. I read that lavender is a perineal but they only last about 6 years. We planted ours 6 years ago, so this may be their last hurrah. The smell after a rain is heavenly. You don’t need cologne, just step out and rub the blooms on your wrists. We have a run of about 7 plants in a row along the side of the building under our living room windows.

My lavender and rosemary are both thriving after the rainy winter and so far a mostly cool and damp spring and summer. I planted a jasmine vine and I’m hoping it will grow enough to make the air smell amazing on summer nights. All my previous attempts at jasmine have not survived the heat. I know it’s not very exotic, but I also have a lot of bright red geraniums. They are perennials here and they get grow to about three feet high and very wide, and you can take cuttings for new plants. I had a huge pink geranium plant but it got trashed by the deck repairs a couple of years ago,

Suzanne – wow. Thank you for posting the link to that. Incredible story, totally believable, and damn, what a writer. Not that it will move the needle with people who refuse to acknowledge what a total piece of human garbage DJT is, but it is a powerful story and I’m glad someone with her writing ability told it.

LA Mary, we had something called night blooming jasmine in Miami when I was growing up, it smelled fantastic and the blooms were white, luminescent at night, almost like a light source. It was hot and humid there so maybe they take a lot of water?

They do take water and they get watered regularly but when we get a few days in a row of 100 plus temperature and less than ten percent humidity watering doesn’t help.

Deborah, don’t feel bad about the emotions that despicable man evokes. I have been reading about the horrible conditions of the incarcerated children at the border, and it makes my blood boil. Toddlers trying to take care of babies. Not enough food, no medical help, living in filth. All because our president sees a political gain in torturing children.
How any decent human being can support Trump is beyond me. In fact I’m coming to believe that no decent man or woman would. If you support Trump, you support the torture of innocent children.
