Face-toucher.

You know, once you try to stop touching your face, you really notice how much you touch your face.

And what’s more, it’s nearly impossible to stop. I mean, does leaning on your chin while you try to come up with a fresher turn of phrase count? Of course it does. My nose itches from time to time; am I not supposed to scratch it? Everyone knows nose itches left unscratched don’t go away. (Anyone who has tried to get through the savasana portion of a yoga class knows this.) I wear glasses and occasionally — which is to say constantly — readjust them. In the process, I touch my face. This can’t be avoided.

Also, it’s still chilly here, and I get a runny nose at the weirdest times. Not a cold, just a little clear drip when the temperature is uncomfortable, or even when I’m sweating. Does a sleeve dragged across one’s nose count?

This is going to be a long slog for some of us, unless we want to go around with our hands cuffed behind us.

For those who wondered: Yes, Shadow Show, Kate’s band, was supremely bummed that SXSW was cancelled. I told them to slide through town anyway, or keep their ears to the ground, because there’s no way all those people closing in on Austin are going to stay home. There will be shows, there will be networking — just go. They’re taking this under advisement. But they have a long drive across the country in the coming days:

Meanwhile, they recorded a single for some obscure psychedelic label called Hypnotic Bridge, and damn if it ain’t pretty good. Very proud of these girlies. They played a show Friday night at Third Man Records and didn’t put a foot wrong. Also, Kate wore go-go boots:

Verdict: “God, those things are so uncomfortable.” You don’t say?

And that was the weekend, in between reading about COVID-19 and trying not to touch my face. Oh, we watched “Ford vs. Ferrari.” Three stars, and I hope I never again have to watch a movie about a car race where a wife watches from home, her face lit by the TV screen and making various expressions of concern, fear and elation.

Primary coming up in 48 hours. We’ll see how that goes. I have no prediction, if you’re wondering.

Funny you wrote this post. All weekend, as I am going about my business, I have had an endless loop running in my head “OMG! I touched my face!!!”
My nose itches “OMG! I touched my face!!!”
There is a hair across my eye “OMG! I touched my face!!!”
My glasses are slipping down my nose “OMG! I touched my face!!!”

But it’s 60° out and sunny, so it’s a good day!

I touch my face constantly. I’m making dinner and it involves jalepeno peppers so I’m very aware of keeping my hands away from my nose and eyes. I washed my hands extensively after cutting the peppers but it hasn’t helped. Ow ow ow ow ow.

The face touching thing is all a matter of situation. Take a ride on the bus — don;t touch your face because you don’t know who has touched the surfaces you have touched. But at home, after you have washed your hands … not a problem. Also if you hold a kleenix between your finger and your face you should be ok. Just don’t reuse the kleenix.

I just as a Geico commercial where people are giving each other the high five. I though this was inappropriate because we’re not doing that anymore because of Coronavisus.

The CDC wanted to advise the elderly to avoid flying because the elderly are more susceptible to the virus and being crammed into a flying sardine car is never a good time. Trump vetoed that. Either he wants his base to die or would rather protect the airlines than Americans.

A marvelous post indeed. Now that I’m an old guy, I really and truly am amazed and genuinely pleased and proud of our young folks and their progress in this world; there is nothing I could be more thankful for as a dad. I can only imagine how much more intensely a mom would experience this mix of gratitude/pride/admiration/wonder…. But indeed, THIS is the good stuff. Beyond that, I’m about to turn 59, and the siren-song of retirement begins to resonate w/me. Ideally, we could do this before the end of Biden’s 1st term, but we shall see

There’s a new clerk at the local Dollar General where I go once a week for stuff I don’t wanna go to Walmart for. She’s a loudmouth and I can’t stand her as she openly coughs all over my stuff and across the counter at me. Usually I’d just go at a different time of day, a different shift…but she’s always there. It’s hard to avoid germs. Right now, Ohio has no Coronavirus, but it’s coming. Michigan’s reported case was a case waiting to be tested, and the test was negative. This was 10 hours ago however. NAFTA was supported by Joe and opposed vehently by Bernie, and the UAW was what I call lightly critical of it at first, as I did see some internal correspondence, being a local union officer. But the UAW International has not and apparently is not going to endorse either one…many locals are endorsing Bernie, as they should, I say. From “In These Times” <> EXCERPT <<

This is the excerpt “The UAW, like many national unions, has not endorsed a candidate in the Democratic primary. Despite the decision of some national unions to bide their time until the general election, the Sanders campaign has been picking up endorsements from local unions across the country all year. In January, Sanders won the endorsement of a 10,000-member SEIU branch in New Hampshire. In February, 7,000 members of the American Federation of Musicians in Los Angeles backed him. Last week, he picked up the endorsement of UFCW 21, a 46,000-member local in Washington state; this week, he was endorsed by AFGE Local 704, a notable high-profile endorsement from federal workers at the Environmental Protection Agency. His campaign has also been endorsed by tens of thousands of people collectively represented by locals of AFSCME, CWA, UNITE HERE and other unions that chose not to issue primary endorsements on the national level.”

Bob Baker Marionette Theatre used to be in another location and every kid who went to public school probably had a field trip to Bob Baker. Both my kids thought it was sort of creepy, which is not an unreasonable reaction to marionettes. The old building was crumbling so they moved over here to the NELA, the new name for my neighborhood. Previously it was known as “that place I won’t go to because, well, you know.” I haven’t been to the new Bob Baker but I know it’s on York Boulevard where all the bodegas and taco places used to be. Now it’s tattoos and expensive juice places.

I’m thinking like you, Bitter Scribe. It just seems inevitable to me that we are all going to be exposed to this virus eventually. If people are contagious before they even show symptoms, why bother with all the angst over whether or not we’re going to catch it? Such a waste of time and energy to get so worked up over something that is already here and isn’t going away anytime soon. I work at a university. I’m washing my hands, but I always do that. I’m surrounded by college students! I am NOT not touching my face because I have more important things to think about instead of whether or not I just brushed away an errant hair from my eyelid (or something). I have to do two sets of eye drops every night for my glaucoma and my eyes seem to be itchy all of the time even though I also use eye drops for allergies. So I can’t not touch my face. It’s just a fact of life.

My granddaughter is 3 today and that is the only thing I’m really spending much time thinking about. We had a marvelous weekend celebrating her. I’m teaching her to be like Mimi: Tell everyone it’s your birthday! And she did. We had brunch at First Watch in downtown Columbus yesterday and she walked in announcing that to everyone. I’ve never been more proud!

If anyone has to self-quarantine, or if you’re just searching for something terrific to watch on Netflix, I have to strongly urge you to start binging “Sex Education.” It’s just two seasons and it’s wonderful and funny and heartwarming and touching. My co-worker recommended it and I’m so glad she did. If anyone else has already recommended this show at this website, I apologize for not paying attention.

In my public speaking class a few weeks ago, we compared and contrasted JFK’s 1961 inaugural speech with St. Ronald of Reagan’s 1981 inaugural speech. Reagan, of course, used his to blast the very mechanism he would soon be running and vowing to get government off the backs and outta the way of the people. And here we are with a true KnowNothing as *president and a leader of a political party that has spent decades embracing anti-intellectualism and painting government as utterly inept confronting a crisis that can only be met with the kind of overwhelming power a federal government can muster.

I suppose we won’t be lucky enough to see the Orange King or Mike Dense afflicted with the virus, even if they were in proximity to it while visiting the hate-fest at CPAC. The fates aren’t really that kind.

Here is where I worry about touching my face: Walmart when grocery shopping. How long does the coronavirus stay viable on the buggy handle? Long enough. So I wipe it down and try to remember not to touch my face, which is hard because my nose is almost always runny.

Here is where I don’t worry about touching my face: at home, after I wash my hands. If the virus is somewhere in our house, I’m getting it whether I wash my hands or refrain from touching my face.

It is likely that the virus will be around for a while, and health officials (the ones not stifled by Trump) are saying they expect the majority of the world’s population to eventually contract COVID-19, just like the common cold and the flu. But I am going to do my best to avoid it. I don’t want COVID-19, just like I don’t want the flu. And, of course, my wife and I are in one of the vulnerable groups, old people.

While I’m not so worried about getting the virus myself, even though I’m over 60, I’m worried for the more vulnerable people who may be old and have chronic health problems. If I get it and don’t know it, or am in the incubation period, how many vulnerable people will I encounter and pass it on to? There are a lot of old people in our building etc. I will go about my business as much as possible, will wash my hands and try my damnedest not to touch my face when I’m out in public. I’m so glad I don’t have to go to an office everyday, and not just because of the virus.

I read that the virus can stay on surfaces anywhere from 2 to 48 hours so wipe down those shopping carts, if that’s true.

It’s like he’s waiting to see whether the angel or devil sitting on his shoulder wins.

There are signs up in Trader Joe’s that tell you not to put items in your own bags before you check out, at least in the TJ stores I shop in. I have a cart that I use for schlepping groceries home from the store. It hooks onto the store grocery carts as you shop. It’s one of those carts made up of a large bag on a structure with wheels, everything you put in it is concealed, not like those wire basket kind (the handles for those are always too low for me and small things fall through between the wire grids).

The age for being more vulnerable to the virus keeps changing upward, first I read 60, then 65 and now 70. Maybe that’s because scientists and specialists are learning more about it everyday?

Here’s why I’m still somewhat concerned about COVID-19: because we’re still not testing enough. So we just don’t know how bad the spread already is. We don’t really know the incubation period (2-14 days is a significant range), and we don’t really have a good idea of the contagiousness of it yet. We’re less than two weeks from the first death here. This whole situation could totally blow up over the next week or so.

So, yes, I’m washing my hands, a lot. I’m trying to touch my face less. I’m touching other people less. Not because I’m that worried about getting it myself, but to help control the spread in the community. I’m still going about my life, though my husband is working from home. I’m glad I don’t have any relatives in a senior facility, because that would be a difficult situation.

How about reviving the fashion (and prophylactic ) of wearing gloves in public, during all seasons?

Of course, there’s no more grazing at Costco sample booths.

I had a hunch a few weeks ago that things were going to get bad, but every financial person I talk to gives the same spiel of not to panic, buy low, sell high, and on and on. The more they talk, the less secure I feel. Bottom line is that they make money off our money but if we lose our shirts, they shrug their shoulders and move on.

But not to worry! The CDC announced they now have 75,000 COVID-19 test kits ready! I might be being pessimistic but doesn’t that seem like a really low ball number for a country this size?

I’ve watched my retirement savings soar and sink with the markets for many years now and I’m not terribly concerned because I’m invested very conservatively and things always rebound. My main concern is getting out at the right time. Better to sell during a bubble, not a downturn. I cannot imagine panicking and selling during a downturn. It’s not like your assets are suddenly defective when they bottom out sympathetically with the rest of the market. In fact, if you have any extra cash it’s the best time to buy depressed stock in companies that you know aren’t going anywhere.

Oh, about the realID thing: you have a passport? You’re all set for the basic ID. Have a social security card? Bring that, and if you don’t have that, log on to the SSA website and they have a thingie you can print out that is “proof” for this purpose. (The Georgia DL center had computers set up where you could get this proof printed out right there. Of course you get out of line.) And then the third thing was some sort of utility bill or other financial bill that arrived at your current address. Even a Comcast bill.

JC, the passport is great unless you’ve had a name change. Trust me, I’ve taken seven trips to the DMV between my mom and I. It also took a couple of months because we had to wait for documents to arrive from Iowa. It was a horrible experience.

My DL is expiring next month, so I just did the pre-application for an Enhanced DL online. According to that, I’ll only have to bring in my current DL, passport, SS card, and proof of residence. The last was the trickiest for me, because I’ve gone mostly paperless! I selected vehicle registration. There was nothing about birth certificate or marriage certificate to prove name change. I mean, the passport already required the birth certificate, and when I changed my name with the SSA, I had to send in my marriage certificate.

We’ll see what happens when I actually go in.

Maybe Indiana is being more strict than other states?

    Jeff B.,

We saw “Bug” at the Steppenwolf Theatre last night, as you referred to in the previous thread.

Indeed, the acting was superb and it was a classic Steppenwolf production. Particularly liked that final set change. Mr. Letts was ahead of his time in addressing what would become the avalanche of conspiracy-theory based, delusional thinking that would become almost commonplace a quarter-century later. “Intense,” as you put it, is spot-on. And I gotta say that, while there was a notice going in with regard to nudity, I did not anticipate the duration nor directness of it. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

Seeing that play in the midst of this pandemic was noteworthy, as well. After having read Sherri’s comment yesterday regarding a ban on gatherings of more than 250 people in her area, and having read the day before that the Court Theater here is limiting its audiences to 100, being in the sold-out, 500-seat Steppenwolf was… uh, shall we say, thought provoking.
