Well, I guess it’s been a minute, yes? Sorry, but I’m just not in the mood to do much these days beyond what it takes to make a living, stay in shape and put food in my body. The MurderSun of recent days doesn’t help. Our spare bedroom/home office gets morning sun, and the neighborhood lost enough trees over the last few years that I keep the blinds drawn so I don’t poach in my own sweat, even with the a/c on. So I sit in my darkened room, reading the news of the day and stewing, not poaching.
Also, been busy.
Had to take Wendy in to get her teeth cleaned, an appointment overdue by about a year. Mission accomplished:

I got a letter in Feb that I am due for a colonoscopy. I still haven’t called. I need to but I hate it so much and am totally using COVID as an excuse.
I have a dental appointment scheduled for the end of the month and as far as I know, it’s a go.

Suzanne, when my colonoscopy was overdue I ended up using cologaurd and they told me I’m
fine and don’t need another test for 5 years. Talk to your Dr about it, but may be appropriate for you. Very simple, noninvasive etc. they mail it to you, you use it according to they’re very simple directions then you mail it back. Couldn’t be easier. But not always appropriate for everyone.

Police have killed a young man in Detroit. Protests have already started. Naturally reports differ as to what happened. It was during an arrest for a deadly 4th of July shooting. All of which reminds me of something Kevin Drum said a few days ago. Drum writes for the Washington Monthly. A few years ago he had suggested that the dramatic drop in crime can be traced to the removal of Tetra ethyl lead from gasoline. Lead is known to cause neurological damage into children and infants. The decline in crime Drum noted followed a 20 year lag since the removal of lead from gasoline. Since most crime is committed by young adults Drum argues that declining exposure to environmental lead is the cause for the decline in crime. Recently he added to that a note that most police offices are in the 40s, which would mean they had been exposed to lead as a child. And thus some of their aggressive response to suspects is from neurological damage. Sadly, while I think cops’ behavior is poisoned I don’t think lead plays that big a part of it.

I just had a dental cleaning last week. In addition to the usual mask and eye protection, the hygienist and dentist wore face shields on top.
I’ve had a couple of telehealth visits, but I’m scheduled for my first in person doctor visit next month.

No surprise that Stone got his sentence commuted. He obviously has some shit he could spill on Trump if he didn’t get something, commutation or full pardon. So Trump had to get him off. Commuting yet another sentence of one of his henchmen certainly makes a clear statement about the guy campaigning as the Law and Order President. The statement is that he’s more openly against law and order, more blatantly crooked, than any president, ever, which is saying something. Why does Il Douché “use it all the time,” though? Because the party that long trafficked in racist dog-whistles has hitched its wagon to the runaway nag who is despicable and stupid enough to prefer a racist bullhorn. The guy who says the quiet stuff out loud. In desperately looking for a fig-leaf to attempt to paper over the racism at least a bit, they latch on to Lincoln, who is so unlike Dolt 45 in so many ways that I’m disgusted to mention them in the same sentence. No wonder he *needs* to “use it all the time.”
Lincoln was a Republican, “so we’re doing a great job.” Aces, Chief, as usual.

Are you kidding me? Disney World is reopening in Florida. What is wrong with people? In Florida. Aren’t the hospitals there at capacity?
Meanwhile in NM people coming in from out of state have to self quarantine for 14 days. So when we come back to NM after our road trip we will happily self quarantine. Plus NM is fining people $100 for not wearing masks, you’re given a citation the first time. Gov Grisham is trying hard to keep the virus tamped down here. I really wish we weren’t going on this trip.

Disneyland isn’t opening yet, but they opened Downtown Disney, the shopping mall for all things Disney and there were people camped out overnight for the opening. I asked someone who found nothing moronic about this what were they selling in downtown Disney that you absolutely can’t do without.

So here’s another one of my husband’s predictions, not sure if he came up with this himself or read it somewhere: Trump will steadily fire/then replace people in the CDC and FDA with sycophantic loyalists. Then in October Trump will announce that there’s a miraculous vaccine for Covid and that he’s responsible for it happening, really it will be bogus and either be dangerous or worthless, and he’ll get himself a few percentage points to possibly be re-elected. I guess we’ll find out.

Trump wore a mask while touring Walter Reed Hospital. The mask had a little presidential seal on it. Probably thrown together at the last minute. When Trump shows up in a mask again it will be gold and have the TRUMP logo on it as well as a giant presidential seal. And maybe the space force insignia.
I just did a curbside pickup for groceries again. They got it right this time. There was a woman with a big sheet of foamcore covered with masks she was selling. I almost went for a Yankees mask but was short on cash and she wasn’t taking cards, I don’t think. From there I did a drive through at a Mickey D’s for a giant iced tea an there was another lady selling masks next to the outdoor menu. I should have picked out a nice tasteful one to send to Trump. If he’s going to wear them often he’ll need quite a few because I bet that orange crap on his face makes a stain that doesn’t come out.

I wonder if Bloomberg could offer Roger Stone a few million bucks to squeal on Trump, I think since his sentence was commuted he can’t get double jeopardy, so wouldn’t do time. But I could be completely wrong about that. Stone is a back stabbing two timer just like Trump, they both know they can’t really trust each other.

Somebody on Twitter suggested that they hope that there are other charges against Stone that he might be charged with once Don the Con has moved on and can’t thwart justice again.
They also suggested that future prosecutions of those in the Maximum Leader’s mob should keep a couple charges off the table, if possible, for the same reason.
This is what we’ve come to in America — an administration that is so corrupt that actually getting convictions of the criminals involved isn’t enough — you have to try to figure out how to game the system to anticipate their brazen crookedness.

I think I would have preferred phrasing closer to “I guess we should have examined the times we live in and not have applied legal ideals to a political world wracked with corruption and propaganda, and maybe we just should have spelled everything out a wee tad bit more explicitly and, well, I’m just sad that they gamed the system and drowned out our findings in 21st century garbage.”

For all of the crimes that Al Capone committed the only thing they could get him on was income tax evasion. So it’s hard to convict thugs of crimes if they know how to dodge the system, as Trump knows how to do so well.
And speaking of Al Capone, a good high school friend’s grandfather in Miami was Al’s Dr for awhile, when he had raging syphilis. Capone died before I was born.

I wonder how many of the people saying the schools must open have had a child in school recently. In a country where even affluent school districts have student supply lists that include boxes of tissues and reams of paper, how exactly are PPE and disinfecting supplies going to be paid for? Much less the space for social distancing.
Whether to open or close schools, or to use a hybrid model, is a very difficult question. But Betsy Devos has no clue.

Gerald Ford was Nixon’s vice-president (unelected, we always have to add), and I think there’s a huge difference between that and Biden, who is of the opposite party and 45’s opponent. And, I think the concept of healing is much more complex this time.
Just read that bankrupt McClatchy Newspapers, who bought Knight-Ridder, who bought the News-Sentinel, has been auctioned off to a hedge fund. Not unexpected, but sad. McClatchy owned the N-S for a nanosecond before selling it to the current inept owners, who drove it all the way into the ground. Am so glad my husband left the newspaper world for that of tourism! Womp, womp.
And not for nothing we’re getting rain for the first time in weeks. It’s rained at other locations around town, but not here. Huzzah.

My ex works in the hotel business, Julie. He’s been furloughed for months. His girlfriend is a travel agent and the only business she’s getting is booking flights for government employees. Her agency has a contract with the federal government and she gets a commission of 26 dollars for each booking. A little different from the Tahiti packages she used to do.

My apologies if this offends, but to me, refried beans look too similar to vomitus and for that reason alone I’ve avoided them for years.
We’ve had rain here today for several hours. First time was in the morning for nearly 2 hours, and then about 90 minutes ago it started up again. It’s just what we need – a nice soaking rain. It should help our frightful grass to turn green again.

Dorothy, because I’ve spent so much time in NM I’ve learned to like refried beans, the trick is you have to scoop them up on your fork with other things like huevos rancheros or enchiladas or something like that. If you eat them solo they’re not good IMO.

Yep, the hotels here are hurting big time, along with the convention and meeting business, restaurants, and general retail. They are rattling around in the convention and visitors bureau and have already laid off someone. Hubby sells their visitor guide, imagine how much fun it is to ask people for ad money right now. It’s been slowly dawning on them that it’s not going to bounce back. Back in April they thought everything would be hunky dory by September.
We took my mom out and it was cool enough that we could sit outside to eat. After that we drove around and let her look at farm fields to evaluate the crops. This was a red letter day for her. Anyway, her theory is that 45 will resign and let Pence pardon him. And I have no doubt he would.
Refried beans are fine, but they kinda look like dog food to me. I’ll eat them when they’re presented to me but never think of buying a can myself.

I was thinking of Obama’s decision to not prosecute any of the banker’s who drove the country into a recession in 2008. It was a time to look forward, not backwards, but since the same people are still in power they have been able to gut all the rules put into place by the Obama administration. Letting Trump, Barr, Pompeo and others get away with their law-breaking only means that the next time Republicans are in power they will do it all over again.

Next time buy Old El Paso adobo, or make it yourself. It’s not too complicated. Usually adobo is canned with chilis in it, not just a can of adobo, so likely it was anchos in adobo. Lots of good recipes call for canned chilis in adobo. Refried beans are fine, especially if you make them yourself or have them in a good Mexican restaurant. Check out Diana Kennedy’s Mexican cookbook. It came out quite a while ago but it’s probably still in print. The woman who does Pati’s Kitchen on PBS has a cookbook too, and her recipes look wonderful.
