There was a news story about Nancy Pelosi at a hair salon (that was not supposed to be open) getting her hair done, not wearing a mask. She says she was set up. In other news, Trump is still a lying sex offender.

I have no doubt she was set up. The shop owner turned the security video over to Fox. Pelosi also said she was seen without a mask because the video was right after her hair had been shampooed. So this is the biggest scandal they can come up with, and it’s not even about Biden.
I have something better. Georgia “Governor” Kemp was shown standing close to some officials and reporters commenting about how people should be considerate of others by social distancing and wearing a mask. Naturally, he was doing neither.

The little town I called home was a White Sox town. My grandfather who worked as Chief Mail Clerk on the NY Central RR between Cleveland and Chicago went to many games at Comiskey Park and when home, always had the Zenith table radio tuned to the Sox. All my tight buddies were Sox fans, and their families were as well, so we were Sox fans. After the army let me go, the first thing I did was start driving to Comiskey Park most every weekend the Sox were home. Sometimes we’d have a 4-car caravan, vans and cars packed with cases of beer and White Sox fanatics. Once my VW Bus’s generator slowly died on the way home and we got back home with basically no headlights. At the ballpark, I’d joke that the crack in the right field wall was put by me when I played a game there with my barnstorming team in 1968. So in 1971 something was different. Nancy Faust became a good reason to come out to the old ballpark. For many years we’d holler and sing along. Here’s something: Sometimes Nancy would really get it going with a tune, and she would get a standing ovation. I know it’s true because I was there and I was clapping. Nancy Faust was so great, it’s difficult to explain. At home, you could hear the muted notes perhaps, but in Comiskey Park those songs and those walk-up intos were REALLY loud.
As the White Sox moved into a crappy new stadium in 1991, I tried to keep the faith, keep up my intense love of the Sox, but I drifted away. Now the Sox are great again, although they were slaughtered last night. Now I live in Ohio and my TV teams are the Tribe, the Redlegs, and the Tigers. I really do not know if any teams employ an organist, but I know most ballpark music is just push button digital , operated by a sound engineer.
The best thing about Nancy Faust is just how cool a person she was, and apparently is.

My favorite was when a ball player’s girlfriend was found to be underage and Nancy played “You’re Sixteen” when he came up to bat. The next time he came to town was after the affair and she played “Photograph”.
The lady who replaced Nancy is a church organist – the Sox have some songs on tape when she’s late because of a mass.

So many great aspects to the Nancy story. I’m sorry I didn’t know about her when we saw a White Sox game in 1993 when we were in Chicago to visit one of my brothers. We have two organs in my department at UD and the older one seems to need repairs about every 18 months or so. The guy I have to call to service it is very chatty so I make sure I have a spare 15 minutes to chat (or rather, listen) when I need to get him on the horn.
Seeing the picture of Nancy Faust wearing number 88 on her Sox uniform made me remember the first time we took our kids to a Pirates game in Pittsburgh. Josh was so excited, taking it all in. “Dad! Dad! Who’s number 88?!” he hollered. Mike looked confused and asked Josh to find the player with that number on his shirt. Little Josh had seen BB on the bat boy’s shirt and thought those were 8’s, not B’s. We still razz him about that to this day.
The Rs are so desperate for a scandal they’re trying to crucify Nancy Pelosi for the haircut issue. But they can’t see the hypocrisy in their lack of criticism for Dummy Dumb Donald for ignoring, for months and months, the guidelines about keeping socially distant and wearing masks. Is it any wonder I have such a low opinion of anyone who is Trump supporter? Each one of them is just as stupid and clueless as he is.

There was an article in The Atlantic by Anne Applebaum about Ingraham that I read yesterday. The GOP is fucked up and ingraham is a big reason.
We’re having extremes in temperature in northern NM lately. Today in Abiquiu where my husband is quarantining until he gets his Covid test results, it’s 55° now but a high of 93° this afternoon. And Tuesday the low in Santa Fe is supposed to be 37°. Crazy.

One of the most effective TV spots the White Sox ever ran was with Nancy Faust quizzing viewers on who had played the most Sox games in history? Of course, it was her.
There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned and reassuring about a organ at the ballpark. The Cubs have a guy seated at one right behind the public address announcer and visible from my seats in the infield, upper left deck seats. I much prefer it to the blaring rock, salsa and rap music they play through the new sound system installed by the billionaire owners. Before getting the video boards and the new speakers, Wrigley Field was one of the few ballparks where you could savor time between innings by chatting with your seat mates about what you’d just seen. It was a huge difference with Sox Park, where loud commercials and music began a nanosecond after the last out of the half-inning. Now, far too often, the music and the commercials at Wrigley drown you out.

I just listened to a fabulous interview with Anne Applebaum on the Lincoln Project podcast, again I don’t have a link but I found it through the Lincoln Project Twitter. It was scary in the way she laid out the ways we are headed toward an authoritarian regime, she lives in Poland, her husband is a Polish politician and she has seen authoritarianism all around her and studied it extensively. Many of the things the Trump administration espouses are just classic lead ups to authoritarianism, just classic.

Though I was never really a White Sox “fan”, I never hated them the way many Cubs fans do. We went to our share of Sox games both in the real Comiskey starting in the ’70s and in the new place, which really isn’t as bad as people love to rail about. (As far as the ballpark is concerned, that is. Jeff B. is right about the manufactured noise.) So, I’ve certainly appreciated Nancy Faust’s talent, humor and good-naturedness, but wasn’t aware that she was quite the pioneer that she was. Nice article.
Yeah, Jeff, though Wrigley certainly must churn out quite a bit more money than it used to, it’s lost a hell of a lot of its “friendly confines” charm. I guess I’m among the few that misses the old days when every available spot wasn’t covered in advertising. The fact that the “family owners” are freaking Trump supporters doesn’t do much to assuage my disgust with the whole operation.

She’s an outstanding historian (Red Famine, Iron Curtain).

When John Lewis died, I went back and started re-reading the Taylor Branch trilogy “America in the King Years” starting with “Parting the Waters,” then “Pillar of Fire” and closing with “At Canaan’s Edge.” It closes with King’s assassination.
I came out of it with a new appreciation for not only Lewis, but Andrew Young, as well as MLK & LBJ. Both of the latter two made some poor choices around stress management, but reading these accounts helps you do some justice to them in how much stress they were taking in.
As for America, in the King Years and the decades since . . . it’s not time to leave. But I understood better why so many did in the late 1960s. Malcolm X & Bob Moses to Africa, others into other forms of safe harbor. God bless Fannie Lou Hamer and Diane Nash and Septima Clark, and all things considered: we have a ways to go to get to the Beloved Community, and I’m against Trump among other reasons because he wants to jam the gearshift into R. But we are not, thank God, where we were. And while I have my own share of mildly horrifying stories about racism where it hides and how it lurks, Sheriff Clark and Bull Connor and George Wallace were just the tip of a terrifying iceberg in the 1960s that has melted, but still bobs around in our home waters waiting to rip out the bottom of boats filled with children and the innocent.
Seriously, I can’t recommend the three weighty books enough. In these circles, they’re not beyond the reading and understanding of anyone here. Sometimes I wish I could hand them out as an assignment, but for many audiences it’s still too much to take in. Harsh medicine, but I think healing for those who can take it. And Lord, what an evil, evil man J. Edgar Hoover was.

One of my long-time partners in Cubs ticket ownership dropped out last year over the Ricketts’ embrace of Hair Furor. Todd is the national finance chairman for the reelection effort and Pete is the governor of Nebraska, who threatened to withhold state funds from any municipality that took Covid-45 seriously. A gay sister is very liberal and was a bundler for Obama, but overall, it’s a seriously rotten family.
But I decided I wasn’t going to let a bunch of tRumpsuckers deprive me of the pleasures of watching Kyle Hendricks work the strike zone, Javy Baez work his infield magic or Anthony Rizzon hitting to the gap. And while I am not overly fond of the loud music, I’ve come to love the video boards and the other improvements to the ballpark. Hell, a man can even buy a shot of tequila on a cold April day if he is willing to pay about three times what it would cost in a bar. . .a treat not available before.
The Yankees have a long and glorious and storied history and have often been owned by utter assholes the fans loathed. I’m in that camp.
At least for now.

I was never the fan that you evidently are, even when I cared more than I do now, Jeff. A dozen games a year, tops, between multiple ballparks. Outings in April were seldom appealing, for any reason. I’ll grudgingly admit that the video boards are a welcome addition, but the “in for a dime, in for a dollar” of the advertising placement throughout the place annoys me. Yeah, if a $10 beer doesn’t quite hit the spot, it’s nice to be able to buy an $11+ Jim Beam cocktail, I suppose.
I’ve tried to cut back on funding millionaires for quite a while now; knowing that these owners are who they are just makes it even easier.

The design firm I worked for before I retired was involved in some of the changes to Wriggleyville after Ricketts bought the Cubs, which I found unfortunate. It was all about hauling in as much dough as possible, it seemed like it was going to lose some of the authenticity of the area and small business owners were going to lose out. I retired before it all happened and I don’t get to that part of town very often so I don’t really know how it ended up.

Also, Bill Barr and J Edgar may have the same approach to the law, that is that the law is what they say it is at any given time. However, I don’t think they shared Hoover’s fondness for cosplay. Tim Gunn, the guy from Project Runway, is the son of an FBI agent, and he told a great story on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me about visiting Vivian Vance in J Edgar Hoover’s office. I bet you could find it online.

Cubs co-owner Todd Rickett’s ‘forgot’ to tell the county property tax assessor that he tore down and old house and built a new house on the property. Shockingly no one in the Rickett’s household noticed they were paying taxes on the torn down property.

One of LB’s friends brought us some home grown tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and basil from her garden today. Scrumptious. I know it’s such a cliche this time of year, but it’s soooo much better than store bought and even The farmers market. Fresh picked less than an hour before is amazing. Our sad garden didn’t give us anything like this.

I just heard an account on the radio of an Amish cult leader who shamed “sinners” in his community by cutting hair and beards. He wasn’t satisfied with shaming his own cult members so he got a gang of his young cult members, went to another Amish community, and forcefully cut the hair of someone there. They were not amused, so they called 911 on them. They played the 911 call, which was kind of funny — reporting a drive-by haircutting. The feds got involved and it became much less funny. The cult leader got 15 years. I could easily picture Mike Pence as the cult leader.

On one hand, you have the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic willing to go on-the-record citing sources saying that Trump thinks soldiers who sacrifice their lives are “losers” and “suckers.” You have AP independently backing this up. You have a record of Trump publicly referring to John McCain as a loser and “not a war hero.” You know that Trump has said publicly that he views avoiding STDs in the ’90s as “my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider.” You know he’s publicly disrespected various American generals on multiple occasions. You know he publicly disrespected Khizr Khan, the father of a slain soldier.
On the other hand, you have Hair Furor denying the Atlantic story and claiming it’s fake news. You know, the guy who’s told an estimated 20,000 lies since becoming president, depending on who’s doing the calculating. He’s even willing to “swear on whatever or whoever” he’s asked to swear on. That means a lot, coming from him. After all, you know the Bible is his favorite book… You have other reliable toadies and noted liars saying that they never heard him say such things.
Seems like a toss-up!
I find it interesting that this may be one stupid, monomaniacal, tone-deaf situation he’s put himself in that may actually be worse than shooting somebody in the middle of Fifth Avenue. I haven’t checked, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Susan Collins is concerned.

While the tRumpanzees howl over the article in The Atlantic, it’s hard to discount tRumpy’s view that anyone who does anything that won’t generate income is a loser. Recall when he visited George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon, how he snarked it was a wasted opportunity for the Founding Father not to have named his property for himself.
But as my man Charles P. Pierce argues today in Esquire online, isn’t it about fucking time these anonymous leakers started giving their names? The senior officials need to come clean, not just the ones sourced in the Atlantic piece but all of the ones who have been privy to horrendous behavior by this president. The Amercan people have a right to know. Our democracy hangs in the balance. Not that we already don’t know, we do know how much Trump lies and how insecure he is and how narcissistic he is. How can these people who know sleep at night.
Even Fox has reported confirmation of the sources.
I’m curious, you journalist among us, how often do you come across anonymous sources unwilling to out themselves when it comes to a corrupt government, locally or otherwise? Is that the general rule or are there more brave souls than it seems like?

We all know now that Trump is going to say the election was rigged and will refuse to leave. It is a foregone conclusion, it is inevitable. Even if Biden wins by a landslide he will sue and obfuscate as much as possible. He will, and we know it. I hope there is a plan in place to kick him out of the White House. I really do. She’s not telling him what to do (to quote you) if Trump wins, she’s telling him what to do if there’s shady stuff on the Trump side.

Trump was scheduled to helicopter to the remembrance, but flying conditions were too dangerous, and the military, not Trump, scrubbed the flight. Ground transportation had not been planned , and the huge caravan through towns, residential areas, villages, and on and on, well, no security had been set up, so The Secret Service advised Trump and the other dignitaries that driving would be too great a risk. Did Trump say some shit about his hair getting wet? Apparently it may have been a joke like Reagan’s (that goddam fascist!) saying he was going to bomb Russia in 5 minutes…perhaps Trump could have insisted he be driven through unsecured roadways…nah…he never would have done that. Anyway, you know I hate Trump, but I also like to read the truth…that day in France was complicated, but believe what you may, no big deal, I mean, Trump got a lot of shit about that day, and that is good regardless. 🙂

Stop printing the one paper that covers the news from the perspective of, “How might these current events effect our troops?” That “the Pentagon” came up with the idea to scuttle Stars & Stripes is ludicrous on its face. It’s just a piece of the pattern we’ve all watched develop for the past 3.5 years. Don John orders something idiotic. Public outcry is louder than expected. We cleaned out the garage the last few days and later next week we’ll take some stuff to the dump. It’s amazing how much stuff you accumulate and then eventually throw away. They have an organization here in Santa Fe called “Buy Nothing” online. You put stuff you no longer want but someone else might, it’s all free and we’ve given a lot away that way but some of it isn’t worth it so off it goes to the “transfer station”, like leftover wood from our cabin project etc. most of that got carted away in Abiquiu but some of the red Spanish cedar we brought back here thinking we’d use for something.

I’m trying to figure out why this year it’s all about the political flags as opposed to the yard signs. Maybe they’re harder to vandalize? They give you more of a “we’re going into battle” vibe?
Of course, I’m still shaking my head at the blue line flag, which looks like a desecration of the American flag, and that yellow ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ one just kinda looks…cowardly.

I read this morning that DeJoy was in the habit of pressuring employees at one of his companies to make campaign contributions to Republicians then compensating them afterwards with “bonuses.” I believe this is a violation of federal campaign laws.
And a judge has placed a temporary restraining order that the Trump mob can’t cut short the enumeration portion of the census. Citing irreparable injury if they do. Ya think!! I almost wonder if in a Biden administration whether the government can’t re-open the census and do it right?

Today LB and I had a lazy “Do Nothing” day. No projects just R and R. I even took a rare afternoon nap. LB’s friend is bringing over some more bounty from her vegetable garden. Everyone here is getting ready for a serious cold snap Tuesday and Wednesday. Snow is no longer in the local forecast but temps over 32 or 33° are. We’re going to lose some plants that were producing a few veggies and we’re bringing in our house plants way earlier than expected. Friday we’re getting the fireplace cleaned so we can’t have a fire until until after that.
