I’ve been reading, off and on all weekend, about how President Trump intends to spend his post-presidency. Bottom line: He’s still going to be out there whoring for attention, and the attention-whore-chasing media will no doubt point cameras and microphones at him.
Whereas this is what I was thinking: I don’t want to see his hamsteak face or his asshole-shaped mouth, ever again. I don’t want to see his ridiculous hair, nor his sex-worker wife, nor his weird kid, nor his pathetic kid, nor the three O.G. kids – the stupid one, the other stupid one, and Government Barbie. I don’t want to hear his braying voice. I don’t want to hear any of his vocal tics, including “many people are saying” or “it was fantastic” or “no one had ever seen this before” or “they said, ‘Sir, we’re so sorry this happened to you,'” or really anything out of his asshole-shaped mouth again. I don’t want to see his veneers in that ghastly rictus smile. I don’t want to see his bubble butt, his man-boobs, his entourage of hideous men and sex-cyborg women. I don’t want to even see another pair of stiletto heels, maybe ever. Don’t want to see corkscrew-curl hair on women, cheek implants, breast implants, nose jobs or inflated lips, either. I don’t want to see Jared. Later, Ben Carson. Later, Steve Mnuchin, and take blondie with you. Bye, Wilbur Cox, Andrew Giuliani, Betsy DeVos and everyone else in the West Wing, including the mice and the flies.
If I’ve forgotten anyone, consider yourself wished into the cornfield.
As the kids say: I don’t want any of your names in my mouth.
But tomorrow, I am increasingly inclined to believe, the state Board of Canvassers will likely deadlock on certifying the election. The turmoil will go on.
How was your weekend? Mine was OK. Got some more stuff done in the basement. Got the laundry done. Got a few errands run. Watched a mediocre movie (“The Nest”). Threw more crap away. Cleaned the kitchen. Made mushroom risotto. During the stirring, I considered all the things I mentioned in the second paragraph. Watched “America’s Next Top Model” reruns on Netflix for as long as it was tolerable (1.5 episodes), which at least made me think about something other than The Man With the Asshole-Shaped Mouth.

Colby — I spent the night there a couple of years ago on my way to Denver. I-70 was closed by a winter storm that looked like a hurricane on the weather radar. The wind turned a tractor-trailer on its side and literally peeled the center line off the road. I drove around town the next day, waiting for the highway to open again. The town is in the middle of nowhere, and some of the nowhere has rubbed off on it.

Uncle Wilbur? You got beef with Uncle Wilbur? 🙂 Good assessment and I do not wanna see those Romanov wannabees in the press except maybe in a story like this: “The Russian Imperial Romanov family were shot and bayoneted to death by Communist revolutionaries under Yakov Yurovsky in Yekaterinburg on the night of 16–17 July 1918. Also killed that night were retainers who had accompanied them: notably Eugene Botkin, Anna Demidova, Alexei Trupp and Ivan Kharitonov.” *Wikipedia* Alexei Trupp ? Sounds like a Trump typo.

Red beer was definitely an old school local thing in Golden, CO. The tourists drank their Coors plain. Being in the town where it was brewed required that you ordered a Coors at the bar. Didn’t bother me. It was easier than the damn blender drinks groups of women would order and the Coors drinkers tipped me. The women did not. And why do women choose to clean out their purses at the table leaving used tissues, fuzzy packs of gum and random receipts on the table? This was in the seventies, btw. I think things may have changed since then. If I’m dissing my gender, sorry, but I’ve spoken to other women who tended bar and they have similar stories. Only thing more annoying at a bar in Colorado was a tobacco chewer. They used empty beer bottles as “sluice jars.” Revolting.

We’re doing curbside pickup of a grocery order tomorrow morning. I ordered two boneless turkey breasts and doing a roulade recipe from the NYT. It involves caramelized onions, sage, garlic and prosciutto. My thinking on taking this route instead of a whole turkey is based on the uncertainty of how many people will be here for Thanksgiving. The ex is a chronic last minute invitation person and I learned years ago to be flexible about my scheduling to accomodate his assholery. I’m cool with doing Thanksgiving on Friday if necessary. This year he was going to do Thursday but today changed the plan to just not including his sons. Fine with them. Fine with me. What he does not know is that one son was exposed to someone who was not feeling well, not masked and later tested positive. So it looks like I will be giving one of those turkey breasts, one set of pie ingredients, some potatoes and brussels sprouts and assorted other stuff to the son who lives with his girlfriend and making a smaller dinner here. The exposed son tested negative yesterday and is getting tested again on Wednesday. If he tests positive, I get tested. If not, Happy Thanksgiving. It’s just a little stressful. Luckily that son can use another door to come and go, another bathroom, etc. so we can stay clear of each other. I’m so fucking sick of all this shit but we keep calm and carry on.

Mashed potatoes, a small amount of dressing, banana bread, and a Costco pumpkin pie. Hubby was going to buy whipping cream but I staged an intervention and we got a can of the squirty stuff instead.
Robinson family gatherings always included real whipped cream. You’d go to grab ice cubes and see the mixing bowl and beaters in the freezer. It’s kind of a pain to make, and it really doesn’t last more than the one meal. Squirty can is much better for just us.

At the time in Colby, and I think most of Kansas, you couldn’t just walk into a bar and get a beer, you had to maintain the illusion that it was a “private club” and go through the joining process, sign something, pay a dollar, whatever it was. That, or be the guest of a member.
I was working a murder trial and had gotten to know the sheriff slightly… he took me and a camera guy to a pool table cowboy bar, where conversation pretty much stopped when we all walked in. The sheriff pointed to us, told the bartender “These men are my guests,” and left. Nobody gave us any trouble; I remember that they kept a certain distance, though.
Dinner Thursday… just myself, Mrs. B, and B Jr. with a little ham, a little veggie ham, and, in there with the sides, a NY Times recipe sweet potato, carrot, dried apricot, and prune casserole. Gotta try something new.

Susan, I’m not doing any Thanksgiving stuff for anyone outside the household at this point unless all involved test negative. Then it’s probably no sooner than Friday but more likely Saturday or Sunday. My son who was exposed lives in my house and will be pretty solidly quarantined in the house. No contact with me, doing his own laundry, washing his own dishes, all that. It’s not a big house but it’s an old house with awkward additions which works well for me in this situation. He lives here already. I’ve been around him before he knew he had been exposed, so while we are taking serious precautions now there was a stretch of time when we were not aware of the situation. Now, this son spends most of his time in his own room facetiming a girlfriend in China and playing video games so our interactions are seldom and brief already and looking back on the last few days they were mostly outdoors. So don’t worry. I appreciate your concern but there’s no big feast being planned with lots of guests and frankly I haven’t done Thanksgiving on the third Thursday of November in at least ten years. It happens when it works for us. If he caught something and has already passed it along to me, we go to plan B. Whatever that is. If his second test is negative and my test is negative we’re probably ok.

We called it tomato beer and it had it’s usefulness, as a hangover helper. I liked bloody Marys on Sunday mornings, not too fancy, but I needed that celery stalk. Cheap Smirnoff was OK for bloody Marys but Popov, another cheapo, was usually what I used. I drank brown liquor, bourbons, habitually however. Today, Pappy Van Winkle at $1100 per bottle is all the rage; my brand was Wild Turkey 101 for special events and Bond & Lillard as a daily drink. My cheapo scotch was Lauder’s, special occasions, middle-priced Grant’s. Glenfiddich and Glenlivet for one-shot only bar celebrations. Nowadays I have no alcohol substitutes for holidays, I just hoist a Vernor’s Diet Ginger Ale. Every year at this time I do crave Beaujolais Nouveau for maybe a day, but never imbibe of any. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/we-deserve-nouveau-wine-in-2020–a-vintage-meant-to-be-fun-and-drunk-right-away/2020/11/20/8b8476f0-2a80-11eb-8fa2-06e7cbb145c0_story.html

Hmmm… Dexter, unless I’m mistaken, back when you were drinking it, Smirnoff was still a *good* vodka. Certainly not on the bottom shelf like the Popov or Sasha, or even the Wolfschmidt. Those were the days before Absolut and then dozens of supposedly *premium* vodkas took over the market and relegated Smirnoff to second-class status. Drinkers of good whiskey that I know disdain any vodka as just being an alcohol-delivery system for mixed drinks, as the point of distilling the stuff 5 times is to make it not taste like anything.
Nothing wrong with Wild Turkey 101, though! : ) I’ve looked at and drunk a lot of bourbon, but I gotta say that Bond and Lillard doesn’t ring a bell. These days I like the Bulleit, Makers Mark price range, Jim Beam Black for a cheaper option — when on sale, which I don’t believe is a thing in Ohio. Deborah’s old client Woodford Reserve, while excellent, is a bit out of range!

I’m doing turkey breasts because I had a lot of variables to consider on how many people when they, we, I eat. A fifteen pound turkey would have been rough on short notice or for few diners. Two turkey breasts take less time and if it’s a two person Thanksgiving or three or four or five I can roast one or two turkey breasts and not have an entire shelf of the fridge occupied with a carcass. I have a smallish fridge in a smallish kitchen. The unroasted breast, if that’s what happens, can go into the freezer or sent off to the son who is doing Thanksgiving at his girlfriend’s house because we’re infectious here. Tough to split a whole turkey and I don’t want two or three or four or five turkey legs.

And if I may elaborate on one item of Nancy’s *truly inspired* list of people and things she never wants to see again: Thin youngish white women with big fake boobs, lots of long wavy blonde hair draped forward over their shoulders, way too much eye makeup, and tight short low-cut sleeveless dresses *for work.* Yeah, I’m real tired of the Fox Blondie look. *REAL* tired of it.

Jakash, Bond and Lillard was sold in Ohio “State Stores”, before they were ended and the state licensed drug stores to sell booze. That may have only been in smaller towns like here in Bryan; I think Defiance still may have a “state store”…hell, I don’t know. Bert Wolfe, the WWI vet I have mentioned here before is who got me on the B & L as well as the Popov, which he rarely drank but kept for his good friend Dale, who loved it. Bert told of how he was a trench in France and another doughboy asked, “Sarge, ya wanna drink?” Bert said ” Don’t ask foolish questions!” as he grabbed the bottle. In the light of an exploding shell he could make out a logo of a turkey, and years later realized it was Wild Turkey he had drunk that night in France.
Can you believe this dumb shit? Years ago my daughter Sandi convinced me to set up a PayPal account. I used it maybe twice, then after a couple years, deleted it and forgot it. Now, somehow, some asshole found my digital ID and charged some toys on it. I mean..it was supposed to have been de-activated maybe 10 years ago! My daughter will know how to handle this, I fucking damn-sure do not.

A Riley, the long wavy hair draped forward over their shoulders is a look I find only made for the camera not functional real life. How would you get that hair to stay in place like that when you went about your daily business.
I think women like Melania and Ivanka look so much better when their hair is swept up in a do off their necks. I thought Melania looked terrific at the inauguration for example.
I’ve had long hair from time to time in my life and it was fine for a while.

We’re eating on Thursday at our son’s, where we have been getting together at least once or twice a month since May. I’m making an apple pie, a chocolate pudding pie, stuffing with gluten (cuz our son can’t do gluten, he’s making gluten-free stuffing) and yams. Just the five of us and I’m not sad about it. Not too much, anyway. Our daughter was going to come with her partner but they decided not to due to the booming pandemic. Safety now hopefully translates to more joyous togetherness in the near future.
Anyone else see Rachel Maddow last night? The topic of the US leaving the Open Skies agreement and the Boeing planes that 45’s administration has decided to ‘liquidate’ had me furious. I might have to go back to neglecting Maddow and Nicolle Wallace, my two favorite shows on MSNBC, and my blood pressure will thank me for it. I vacillate between wanting to keep informed by intelligent people and the desire to maintain some semblance of calm about the next 8-9 weeks.

This year it’s just going to be Thanksgiving for two, and that’s fine. As I mentioned before, it’s my first opportunity to try America’s Test Kitchen’s turkey en cocotte, where you brown and braise a breast in a dutch oven.
Today feeling a weird sense of relief that the transition is moving forward and that Biden is staffing up with competent people in whose hands the world will feel safer and it occurred to me why perhaps so many voted for Trump, aside from the racism. I think a lot of people don’t have any understanding or appreciation of foreign policy or economics and feel frozen out of the conversation when it comes to wonky stuff. It just doesn’t hold their interest. The GOP weaponized this post-9/11, first by letting Dubya pretend that we were avenging the incident by invading Iraq, then by pretending that Obama’s foreign policy was an “apology tour” and that he was “genuflecting to Muslims” and “selling out” our country to “terrorists” with the Iran nuclear agreement.
Trump, who famously refused to be briefed on any matter, swaggered onto the world stage and acted like a jerk and destabilized the whole world in the process. He did this for the benefit of his supporters. His supporters were impressed.
We’ve got a lot of work to do, but civics education should be a top priority in addition to climate change, or the world is still going to be fucked.

One thing about this administration: I have inadvertantly learned so much about the cogs of governing because so many norms were broken. I did not know there was an emoluments clause; never heard of the GSA, or the Open Skies treaty (well, I know I did a few months ago, but before that? Don’t think so.) I’m sure I could provide more, but just can’t think of anything right now.
I am shocked in a good way that the justice dept. did not try to help Trump steal the election. They’ve done lots of other ratf***ery to be sure.

Long hair, huh? About 45 years ago I had long, red hair down on my shoulders. I don’t remember it being a hassle, even while I was running. My hair is pretty short now, even though I only get two haircuts a year. This year I let it grow for a long time, like most people. I considered letting it go permanently, but then I saw an old guy with long hair, and I thought, “I don’t want to look like that.”
Of course, I have about half as much hair as I did 45 years ago, so it was never going to be the same. And it’s not the same color.

We’re going to have a turkey breast for the three of us,and then some of the in laws are coming over to the backyard, weather permitting, for a bonfire over the tree stump that I still haven’t been able to completely remove. I would have had to remove and rebuild a brick pier if I wanted to bring in a stump grinder, and that’s starting to look like that would have been the better decision. Kind of like getting rid of all the Trump in the government, am I right?

I wore my hair short for years. It looked cute. It was expensive to maintain. I have cool bun clips and an antique tortoiseshell barrette instead.

The rest of my family will be gathering with my son-in-law’s clan, probably at least 20 of them altogether. They are under the impression that my parents and I are “over reacting, it’s just the flu”, etc, and it has been a source of high stress for me since this whole thing began. I have very recent e-bay experience as a matter of fact. I created an account last week so that I could buy my parents a retro-colored toilet to match the rest of their mid-century bath fixtures. Their toilet got broken during a plumbing repair and we figured we’d have to order another one. The company that makes retro-color toilets appears to have gone belly up so we figured we’d have to find a used one.
So I find a used one in perfect condition and the right color. I pay for it on e-bay, but the price doesn’t include the shipping charges which are to be calculated by the seller. I receive the total charges the next day and about shit myself. Nonetheless I still try to complete the sale and PayPal won’t accept my credit card. I went through repeatedly and couldn’t find anything wrong but apparently it had issues with something in one of the fields being incorrect. So I tried to e-mail e-bay and explain my situation but no response.
Instead I keep receiving threatening e-mails from e-bay that I’m going to be put on some kind of punitive list for not having consummated the sale. Meanwhile my handy hubby epoxied the busted toilet and it seems to be working fine, so we really don’t need somebody’s overpriced used toilet anyway.
I’m sorry I opened an e-bay account. I’ll probably never use it. It’s just another opportunity for my info to get hacked. Here’s betting credit transactions on my card will go through just fine for someone else.

No help for you on eBay; I’ve bought a few things but never tried to sell. And I only buy when I can use my credit card because of my PayPal experience.
Our daughter wanted to pay us for her phone bill every month through PayPal, because it was so easy, and she didn’t have checks. It turned out to be not easy to get the money; first you have to login and request its release, then 3-5 business days later it can be moved into your account. I never used it to pay for anything because I prefer the consumer protections that come with credit cards.
One day I logged in and there was a $500 debit against my account. PayPal told me I would have to take it up with my credit union. That was it. It was totally on me to fix. I was able to get the help I needed at the credit union and after a couple of weeks the money was restored. The second it was I closed my account.
So Dexter, I predict many hours on the phone with your financial institution. You didn’t need that right now but I hope you are able to work it out.
Because of my experience I’ve stayed away from Venmo and all the other electronic ways to send money. I’ve read stories of people sending money to the wrong person and being unable to get it back. If I can’t use cash, check, or credit card, it doesn’t happen.
And you know? I just ordered checks for our new place and they were less than $10. I only write two or three every month but they sure come in handy.

EBay and PayPal were started by the same people. Elon Musk for one Meg Whitman was one as well. I use paypal pretty regularly. About a month ago i was charged for something I didn’t order. I wrote to paypal. They investigated and said the vendor claimed I ordered it so tough nougies. Then they refunded my money. Ok. Whatever. The vendor hasn’t asked for the money back and I’m not going to open that can of worms. Julie, can’t your daughter pay her phone bill by debit card on the phone? I do that all the time too and never had a bad experience. I haven’t written a check in years. I pay electronically for most everything. I have a Venmo account that I only use to tip the lady who cuts my hair three times a year, but my sons both use Venmo all the time with no problems so far.

I’ve sold a few thing on eBay. Probably fewer than fifty. I’ve never really had a bad experience as a seller. My only advice is to pack the items before you list them so you have the actual cost of shipping on the listing. I’ve listed things one or two times when I was in a hurry and guessed about the shipping weight and package size and ended up paying quite a bit more for shipping than I got from the buyer. I’ve never had any problems with PayPal as a buyer or seller.

I haven’t spoken to my brother the uber Republican since the election. Although he’s deeply closeted (in the opinion of everyone related to or famliar with him) he works very hard at appearing to be straight, fanatically law abiding (won’t use weed to help with his chemo because it’s still illegal federally even if CO says it’s legal) and as clean cut as Ronald Reagan he thinks Trump is fab. But I was thinking: how much does someone like my brother, my nephew the nasty racist cop, the very white person at a trump rally have to overlook to like trump? Same brother cites Biden plagiarizing parts of a Neal Kinnock speech in 1973 or saying that Obama is a liar because he said people could keep their doctor. But he’s ok with Trump’s womanizing, tax cheating, bankruptcies, makeup wearing, dog hating, nepotism, con games and accusations of sexual assault. All the nutty professor proves is that there are nuts in the world. Being a physics professor is not proof against personality disorders. Being a physics prof also does not mean that a person is smart in the commonly- understood way. He might, or might not, be smarter than the average bear. A PhD isn’t a demonstration that a person is smart. In fact, I have known some PhD’s that said some pretty silly stuff even in work environments.
I tried briefly to find out more about Thomas Brennan but got mostly accounts of scandal.
I have criticized physicists for thinking that a physics degree makes them an expert in any area. Brennan is apparently a nut in a lot of areas.

We have this discussion here before, but in my experience, people with physics degrees lead in arrogance, even ahead of surgeons. I don’t know of many surgeons who would think it would be relatively easy to pick up physics, but I know many physicists who think any field is relatively easy to pick up. And yes, I say that as someone with an undergraduate degree in physics.
Yesterday, I managed to find a little bit about Thomas Brennan before it got swamped by scandal. He has a BA in Physics from the University of Chicago, an MS in Physics from UCLA, and a PhD from Illinois Institute of Technology, which is not what you’d typically expect from a graduate of Chicago and UCLA. That says to me some combination of bad grades and bad letters of recommendation, because bad GREs could definitely be overcome by good grades and recommendations from reputable institutions. In other words, dude was nuts long before this.

My Dad, in his last few years, slept through a lot of audio books. He would lay back in his recliner, put on his headphone and soon the soothing voice of the narrator would put him to sleep. He never realized he was sleeping and would complain that he couldn’t remember half of what he heard.
My eyes aren’t what they used to be but are good enough to read a book. I dont think I’ve ever tried to listen to an audio book. It always struck me was requiring too much attention to listen to and drive a car, and I can read so much faster than listen. That said I have to agree with David G that listening to Barack Obama’s voice for 24 hours would so soothing.

If it’s a book that I feel like I need that every last detail, then audio doesn’t cut it. But something to distract me on a drive or during cardio or some other task, perfect. I also use audiobooks to nap; something I already have read, particularly narrated in a good plummy British accent, is good. PG Wodehouse works well. If it didn’t bother my husband, I’d use it to go to sleep at night.
