I wrapped up a freelance piece this morning, which I’ll share with you all when it’s published. It contains a passage where a person who has said something indefensible then claims they were, in his own words, “misquoted out of context.” (He was not.)
So it was funny to read, just now, that Indiana Sen. Mike Braun, from the Dipshit party, said today that not only abortion, but interracial marriage is an issue the Supreme Court should have kept its nose out of, and left it to the individual states.
This is a big thing lately, you know that. Why are we talking about Griswold v. Connecticut, the 1964 decision that legalized the sale of birth control to married couples? Because senators from the Dipshit party are talkin’ states’ rights like a bunch of goddamn Confederates. All three GOP candidates for Michigan attorney general stood up at a voter event last month and declared Griswold was wrongly decided.
To the Republican party, there is no issue that is fit to be decided at the federal level, and if that means Mississippi and Alabama should have been allowed to take their sweet time coming around on slavery, until 1976 or whenever, well, OK then, that’s our system.
Oh, and how this connects with the freelance story I wrote? Braun is already claiming he was “misunderstood,” as though being asked a direct question and giving a direct answer is all that open to interpretation. Here it is, in fact. You tell me:

And yet, there are still some people who hand-wring over any random poll that shows Americans wouldn’t want to date or marry someone from the other party. I wouldn’t want to let one of these freaks into my house, let alone my inner circle.
Now, when you get these freaks on the second day, when they realize the limb they’ve climbed out on, they’ll be all no no we don’t want to ban birth control or interracial marriage, not at all, it’s just how it was decided. Which tells you their dreams of a white ethnostate in someplace like Idaho is just fine with them.

Good lord, these people. Although I have to say, if someone gave me Don Jr.’s diary, I’d read the shit out of it. And I’d move my lips while doing so, in the spirit of its writing.

When I was having trouble sleeping due to intense anxiety when the pandemic first hit, I got a prescription for hydroxyzine, which is basically amped-up Benadryl. It worked pretty well although maybe not something to take all the time. I also occasionally take half of a gummy before bed.

I am sleeping so much better since I started taking anxiety meds. It is glorious to sleep 8 or 9 straight hours and then still be able to doze off and on in the morning. Simply fabulous feeling.

It was inevitable that Griswold would be in their sights. One, it’s Griswold that establishes the right to privacy that Roe is based on, and two, they don’t believe that women should be able to have agency over their own lives.
It is impossible to separate conservatism in this country from white supremacy. Some of them just dress it up nicer, and these days, they feel less compelled to do so.

Flew out to Napa valley Sunday afternoon and have been enjoying some fine weather, they claim they make good wine out here but every bottle I have seen must not be to good because they have a cork instead of a screw cap, how’s that work? People seem friendly, lots of bikes, nice trail to run on behind my hotel along the Napa river and the food is good, a lot of homeless along the river though they seem to keep them out of downtown. Gas is $6.00 a gal and small houses are close to a million, seems like everyone has a dog and they are allowed in shops and restaurants. Returning to FWA Wednesday afternoon just short of 4hrs in the jet.

I think interracial marriage was a different Supreme Court decision (Love)? than Griswold. Griswold lead to Roe and later to bans on sodomy laws which in turn lead to gay marriage and transgendering. But it’s all the same because the MAGA people want to abolish all those people.
I don’t understand why James O’Keefe isn’t in jail yet. It seems like everything he’s done is a fraud, libel or slander. He deliberately edits video to make it seem like people are saying things they didn’t. Now it looks very much like he orchestrated the theft of Ms Biden’s diary and attempted to blackmail Joe Biden with it. There has got to be a crime in there somewhere.

John Waters is prominent in the Warhol diaries miniseries. We even get a few glimpses of Divine. I did not know the depth of the Warhol/Jean Michel Basquiat collaboration; this show is so damn informative.
My grandson, age 32, who was homeless and begged me to let him stay here for a short while as he got his shit together after legal obligations from heroin possession w/fentanyl got him a felony charge, dropped as he completed drug court, is still here. He had a good job and quit it in early December, laid around for 3 months, then got a new job, met a woman at work, brought her here, and I blew my stack when I came home to smell weed. I told him, he who completed drug court and is no longer drug tested, that I must have a clean and sober house and if he stays here, no goddam weed, because although we all know weed is not necessarily a gateway drug, for him it is, proven many times, 6 Narcan resurrections under his belt. So again, tonight, he brought his girlfriend here and again, skunk weed residue in the air. Denial. Then his girlfriend had the balls to admit she has the weed and she took it to the car I just loaned grandson the money to buy just 24 hours ago. So a guy just free from drug court obligations is now driving around with gawd knows how much weed. Then he informs me she is going to be staying with him for a while, and well, no fucking way am I allowing a drug culture to brew in my house, as I have had enough of that fucking drama in my past, and have maintained total freedom from recreational drugs and alcohol for 29+ years. So the 2 of them left for her place, in another county someplace. Most of the weed smokers I knew and know do not take the steps into hard narcotics, but SOME of them do. This is why my grandson is on thin ice, making sure a new partner is a druggie, compatibility, see? Change? Program? Oh HELL no! Kick out the jams, motherfucker, let’s get high. Yes. No.

Sorry to hear that Dex. The drug court program is great for giving people second chances but we need more supports in place to discourage recidivism in the near term. I don’t think it would be unreasonable, in the case of heroin addicts, to require some sort of probation with drug testing for five years after being released back into society.
When Leo Morris was at the News-Sentinel, he and I quarreled numerous times in the comments sections over his blog posts and columns where he asserted that the right to decide who can marry belongs to citizens like him at the state level and that his rights were being trampled, not those of gay people. He couldn’t be dissuaded from his position by anyone pointing out the rationale behind Loving v. Virginia and its similarities to Obergfell but he also didn’t have the balls to say it or the News-Sentinel might have been put out of business a few years sooner than it was.

I am seriously not sure that if the US had let the slave states secede slavery would ever have been abolished, to this day. Slaves were the second most valuable asset to the slavers, second only to the land itself. They would never have voluntarily given that up. The twisted, perverted logic that let them sleep at night is alive and well today. These people are the spiritual, and sometimes literal descendants of the slavers.

A couple of my women students expressed amazement in class yesterday –remember, I teach at a Jesuit university– that they may lose the right to contraceptives and abortion because six people on the high court say it’s not really a right after all. They’re also concerned about LBGTQ rights, which is reasonable since SCOTUS apparently believes religious rights trump all others.
We’ll see if their legitimate concerns lead them to become active in the political sphere after graduation. I hope so.

I remember my mother telling me that when she was young, she couldn’t get a credit card in her own name–it had to be in my father’s. It’s the same thing with vaccines. No one under 50 or 60, or even 70, knows anyone who’s lost a child to a vaccine-preventable illness, so they assume they don’t need them. Whereas my mother and father lost classmates to pertussis, knew kids who walked with braces because of polio, etc.

If John Waters is prominent in the diaries miniseries it’s something added from outside the diaries. Divine is mentioned a couple of times and appears at the Factory once. Other dreamlanders are referred to as John Waters people but that’s all the mention he gets.

We’ve watched the first 3 episodes of the Warhol diaries and I have to say I’m disappointed, not sure we’ll watch the rest. It’s mostly about Warhol’s sexuality not much about his art. I couldn’t care less about his sex life but I do care a lot about his art. I did know that he and Basquiat had works in common, we’ll leave it at that. Warhol’s soup cans don’t do much for me but I love his portraits and shadow paintings. He was an oddball for sure, but a talented one.

My mother lived in fear the whole time she was pregnant with me because of Rh factor complications. She was negative, dad positive, and my older sister positive. Thus the fear her body would have built up antibodies and it would kill me, or at best, I’d need a complete transfusion immediately after birth. Fortunately I’m also negative, and by the time I was having my babies, no one batted an eye. I had a shot after my first, another one during pregnancy, and one more after the second kiddo.
All this…waves hand…is why we need better history classes. Of course, in Florida, you have to make sure none of it makes anyone uncomfortable.

Julie, I’m Rh negative, too, and so is my husband. So I didn’t need the shot, but I did get the “is there any chance your husband isn’t the father?” questions. I didn’t take offense, because I understood why they were asking, and besides, our daughter was conceived with assisted reproductive technology. I’d laugh and tell them, “not unless the lab screwed up!”

I made a scam report to the Better Business Bureau about an online company called Just Answer. When our dishwasher was leaking in Santa FE back in December we were beside ourselves with water leaking all over towels all over the floor trying to sop it up quickly and I for some reason decided I could fix it and went online, found this company and for $5 (I thought) they would put me in touch with an expert to help us figure out if we needed a new dishwasher or could have it fixed. So in a panic I believed it. A supposed expert sent me a text and asked me a couple of stupid questions. I realized right away that it was worthless so I decided to just look up leaky dishwasher on You Tube and figured out what the problem was and how to fix it. LB and I fixed it the next day. But what I didn’t know was that after 7 days the online company made you a “member” and charged $37 a month for their service. Because we were in Santa Fe and our bills go to our Chicago address my husband didn’t realize until this morning that we’ve been charged for 3 months. What a scam. So I called them today and screamed at a poor woman in Bangladesh or someplace, and her “supervisor” and was on the phone for over an hour or so demanding my money back. Of course they said it couldn’t be done that on their website it says the monthly payments are not refundable etc etc etc. Of course that’s all in microscopic print at the bottom of page online and on a iPhone it’s impossible. I was a broken record telling them over and over to cancel my membership and refund my money. They finally agreed to refund it, but of course I don’t believe them. I will probably have to get a new credit card and redo all of my subscriptions etc, to work with the new number. After I got off the phone I contacted the BBB and found that they had about 3,000 complaints about them. They said to advise other consumers not to use them, so I’m telling you all now. This company knows they know they have you over a barrel, that you’re desperate to get an answer to an emergency and then they snare you with their outrageous fees, it’s shameful. Don’t do what I did, be smart.

I’m A- and LB is O+ so I had that RH shot after she was born. No more kids, so if I hadn’t had the shot, it wouldn’t have been a problem but I didn’t know that then. In college I worked for the NYT Rocky Mountain Bureau. If the bureau chief was out of town which was very frequently the situation I could use any invitations or tickets that came into the office. Andy Warhol had a show opening at the Denver Museum of Art and I had that invitation to the opening reception in my hand. I arrived and the museum staff was practically genuflecting at the arrival of the NYT. Andy wasn’t feeling well but they dragged him out of wherever he was and made him talk to me. Our conversation was brief and inconsequential. He looked like he was going to pass out.
The same invitation and ticket deal allowed me to meet Paul McCartney. I also talked to a lot of cool people on the phone. Nora Ephron, Calvin Trillin, John Wayne, Barbara Jordan. Billy Jean King and Rosie Casals stopped by the office which was the bureau chief’s home. Rosie had slept on the couch there.

LAMary, great story, what year was that? Andy Warhol died fairly early, he was 58 I think. After he had gotten shot by that crazy woman he wasn’t well much of the time, he lived 19 years after he was shot but it’s what eventually killed him. He looked much older than 58 if you ask me.

We ordered some dining chairs from Design Within Reach last spring, they were delivered about 6 months later, but the wrong color. So we reordered them in the proper color. Now they tell us they wont be here until mid June. They come from Italy and are quite costly, I can’t believe how long this has taken. Meanwhile we have to still sit on the most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat in.

Speaking of anal orifices, may I cheerlead for getting your colonoscopy done, especially if you’re overdue? Since my grandmother died of colon cancer, I just had my third today, but it was 12 years after the last one. I mentioned to staff I’d be writing & posting about how it’s not as bad as some make it out to be, and important, and they were very happy anyone would help pass the word . . . they’ve had a few as they’re playing catch-up after COVID at our community hospital that turned out to be cases needing further attention, but I’m happy to report I was polyp-free.

Thanks to a friend who was a roadie in the 70s I was backstage at a Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac and Santana concert. Twice. Dennis Wilson was bumming cigarettes from me. Geez, never any backstage passes for me, but once ,after the Dana Corporation clutch business was sold to Eaton Corporation, HQ’d in Cleveland, the HR chief saw me adorned with a Cleveland Indians cap while driving a forklift on the factory floor. He said he could easily get company tickets if I wanted to go to a game sometime, and he asked if I knew any other Tribe fans, which I did, one of our Toledo plant transferees named Chuck. So the HR man commandeered the company minivan and Chuck, I, and the HR guy’s grandson went to see the Cubs play the Tribe in Cleveland, sitting in box seats between the dugout and home plate 2 rows up from the field. It was like Chuck and I had won a contest. Unfortunately, a one-off, as the HR chief was mowing his neighbor’s yard a few weeks later, and fell over dead of a heart attack, age 57.
The only major media characters I ever interacted with were John Madden the football guru, on Amtrak train 49 eastbound out of Chicago, and VP Spiro Agnew, who I shouted at in Fort Wayne during a speech, arousing a come-back from him, which made the Cronkite news that night, according to some friends who saw the news that night. 1972 re-election campaign.

I just realized that all I refer to anymore are dead people. Oh, I finished the Andy Warhol Diaries show. I really think it’s very well done and informative. I did not know half the stuff that was revealed, especially the fact that Andy’s former boyfriend was on Flight 800 that night in July, 1996, Paris bound from JFK. I remember going to my doctor for some anxiety pills just in case I had a panic attack, as I was flying to the coast a few days after that horrific crash and I was nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof. I never took any of those pills , ever. So many people swear they saw a missile hit that plane, but it was proven it was an onboard explosion that doomed it. So there’s a whole bunch more death I write of. Damn. I promise to liven up my posts.

Did the backstage pass thing several times when I used to shoot concerts back in the 70s… got an email awhile back asking for pics of Gentle Giant for a book someone in England is doing and indeed I had some from 1977 at the Circle Theater in Indy, all the way down in the bottom box along the back wall of the storage locker. Never thought I’d have occasion to look at those again.

When my mother was expecting my youngest sister, 1962-63, the public was becoming aware that the thalidomide drug was creating birth defects that should never have occurred. I remember my mother telling someone she was afraid to take any kind of drug at all during that time. I was 12 so I just vaguely grasped what was what.
I know I’ve said before that my father-in-law was a victim of polio, he only 29 years old with a young family, that left him a crippled man for the rest of his too-short life (55). Despite that, he did recover enough to work as a planner at North American Aviation in Columbus, which later became Rockwell, and now sets empty on the south side of the now John Glenn International Airport. Between that and being able to remember the polio epidemic, I have complete disdain for these science denying jerks.

I don’t know how anyone could be proud to belong to the party that supports the likes of Cruz, Trump, Blackburn, and Hawley. No one and the list is far larger than those four names. Shameful people.

I used to fly in parts and pick up mechanics at those hangers at CMH, they are still being used by some of the regional airlines to do maintenance. Those hangers are huge and there are actually lower bomb proof levels, or so I have been told.

She has handled the overt racism and misogyny with grace and patience and has proven her judicial temperament beyond any doubt. I know what you mean when you say they aren’t dumb, but when they constantly perform dumb, what’s the real difference?
Besides, they have decided that performing for the attention and approval of a group of dumb people is the best way to serve the nation as a Senator, and that sure seems dumb to me. (Ted Cruz was checking his name on Twitter during the hearings yesterday to see how his performance played.) Maybe it’s clever, but it ain’t smart.

Today I learned that the first Senate confirmation hearing for a Supreme Court nominee was held in 1916. That’s right, for 127 years, the Senate managed to advise and consent without the public spectacle of hearings. What happened in 1916? Woodrow Wilson nominated Louis Brandeis, who was Jewish.

What floors me, Heather, is that only a few years ago there really was such a thing as cancel culture, and those who were that closely associated with such unseemly activity quit while they were ahead rather than face such disgrace. Trump proved that you can weather anything with a defiant pose and the GOP has made that its new modus operandi.
