Saturday morning market.

A Cobb salad of flowers, today. This is what backs traffic up down the freeway ramps — cheap annuals.

    Lovely!

A Fort Wayne city council member put some very nice photos of some wild flowers up on his site, with the headline “Something positive”.

Presumeably the headline was intended as a contrast from all the other headlines regarding the sudden embarrassing political demise of our lamentable “Family Values” member of Congress.

But from where I sit, it appears that everything is coming up roses, lately!

It rained and rained last night, hereabouts; the weather radar I saw looked like metro-Detroit was also in the deluge. Nothing like Basset’s rain in Nashville, but definitely enough to close some streets and get everyone’s attention

Looks like Seven Layer Salad to me. One of my favorites.
Next to last day in Abiquiu, we leave tomorrow. It’s been so relaxing, quiet and peaceful, well except that there has been a rash of break-ins in the hood. There are about 10 houses in our area and 2 got broken into. That’s creepy. We assume it’s because of the economy. Rio Arribba is the poorest county in NM. In one of the houses the owners had only been gone for 2 hours, so it seems someone is watching carefully. The houses are spread out considerably so it’s hard to watch out for your neighbor. One of the houses had an alarm system, but got broken into during a power outage after a rare storm, and the crooks went through the doggy door. Talk about taking advantage of a situation…

Be safe, Deborah. One tip I heard on the teevee—NEVER post on Facebook when you are leaving home, even for an hour, and especially for a vacay.

I have been pretty lucky in life with having things not stolen. I did have three bicycles stolen over a 20 year period, but whatcha gon’do? Of course, in the army, I had everything stolen, transistor radio, field gear in a duffel bag, the entire contents of my locker…brutal environment in those barracks.

I was wondering if my daughter and her bf, her son and the son’s gf were going to get out of Detroit this morning the way the weather was all day yesterday. But she called from Miami, en route to the Mayan Riviera of Mexico, another vacation—that girl gets around—just spent a week in Key West in March.

Nice flowers. My dad’s second cousin had his picture in the Auburn Star last week posing with his bed of iris.

There are ice plants or African daisies growing on the sides of the freeway ramps here, blooming all year. No one gets too excited about the flowers, but traffic on the ramps gets ugly when the sprinklers get misdirected. You pull off the freeway and get a windshield full of water and a slippery ramp.

I visited the Banksy art near the GM Tech Center in Warren. It’s a rat walking across a tightrope that’s actually a rusty chain strung across a bricked up entry to a vacant warehouse. Cars zoom by about 10 feet away while you’re trying to take pictures.

This is the best interview/explanation of Lady Gaga I’ve seen:

My daughter’s summer job includes identifying invasive species in various Indy parks. I was dismayed to learned that all that honeysuckle that lines the freeways in central Indiana is considered seriously invasive. But I am really just posting to see what my new gravatar looks like when it is tiny.

I was at the Detroit Sunday. Very hot and very busy. The Iris flower beds were especially beautiful. A great time was had be all but now I’m bushed!\

Connie, I love the purple thrift that grows along the Interstate and dismayed to learn that it is an invasive species as well.

Couldn’t help myself this weekend and bought two flats of that annual red salvia just like those in the picture above, just seven bucks per. (Nance, this was at Sell’s in York Township, Steuben County—you may remember that I was surprised to learn that the Sell family is an Eastern Market vendor.) Also bought lots of other stuff and then created a whole new bed for it all. The original purpose of the bed was to make a place for pumpkins and melons, and that mission was accomplished, but I’m beginning to think that my garden area is looking too, too busy.

In other outdoor news, I still haven’t ID’d what sort of raptors are dwelling in the top of one of my trees, but I’m starting to see their droppings, as it were—squirrel carcasses covered in downy feathers. I fear for the tame rabbits who have adopted my yard as their home and hope I won’t be finding their remains.
