I thought that was John Sayles, from his pastoral phase.

Actually, Cooz, after I looked it up, I discovered “brother from another mother” is allegedly street slang to describe close friends, but I never heard it before the movie.
Not goat, just organic. And overpriced, but I was in the mood for a splurge, and he was a good salesman.

C’dad, a friend of mine from college, Carl Lumbly, was in that movie. Didn’t know it when we went so were vastly surprised and pleased to see him on screen.

Moe: I was surprised to see one of our regular customers (at the stationery store where I worked in Chapel Hill) pop up in a Milos Forman movie, with a speaking role, no less. The character he played was essentially the same guy who would show up at the store, but in the film he was supposed to be stoned. It reinforced my view that you could train a motion picture camera on Franklin Street for a couple of hours most days and get something worth printing.

coozledad: It was really a great feeling to see three old baseball teammates in a movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074207/
Yessir, for two summers I toured with the Indianapolis Clowns, who, when the Negro Leagues disbanded, kept travelling and putting on a baseball show for another thirty years or so. When Hollywood made this film, they must have consulted Ed Hamman, who owned the team, and was the last person in the world , apparently, who still was in the baseball business and had direct lineage to the old days of “colored” baseball teams.
After the racial unrest of 1967 , Mr. Hamman decided to travel with a few white players for whatever reason, and I was chosen. I could write a book on the things that happened relating to race that I witnessed those two summers…man.
He must have tipped off film director Badman to get a few guys into the film. Dero Austin, a pygmy dwarf who was our business manager and who also performed in many comedy bits on the field, was in the film…a helluva funny man he was. “One-Armed Stevie Anderson” was our first baseman. He had lost his arm as a baby in a car accident, but he could really play great baseball, first base.
Most of the screen time amongst the three was had by Birmingham Sam Brison, who played shortstop for us and was paid well compared to the chicken feed I played for. Sam was on-screen quite a bit. None had speaking parts.
Sometimes I wish I could have seen Richard Pryor cutting up with “Midget Dero”. I bet it was a real hoot.

Wonerful news, Basset; I bet Mrs B is greatly relieved, too.
Dexter, great story.
This weekend the young folks and I have been scraping and re-painting exterior window frames, which wasn’t nearly as bad as I was braced for

Basset so glad to hear it.
Is it just me or are any of you seeing a duplicate of the saturday at the market post?
Back in Chicago after my vacation in NM. As much as I love NM, I’m gladto be home. With my bum foot this trip was challenging.

thanks so much! Mrs. B’s parents came from Michigan for the party, my cousins came from South Carolina, had a houseful of people all afternoon and into the evening, catered food appeared in the Basset home for the first time ever but I had to do some barbecue anyway. Jr. is home from school on fall break, life is good.
at one point or another just about everyone went out on the deck, looked at the creek (technically it’s the Harpeth River but it’s not that big under normal conditions, you could throw a brick across it pretty easily) a good thirty feet below, and said the same thing we’d been thinking for so long… no way would that water ever get clear up here.
(barbecue recipe: beef brisket, rub with Weber spice, blacken on the grill, put in the crock pot with sauce until it falls apart, cut into little pieces, stir back into the sauce, spoon onto hamburger buns. sauce involves a bottle of HFCS-loaded, way too sweet commercial sauce, red wine vinegar, rice vinegar, tomato paste, tomato sauce, ketchup, and a couple of Oxo cubes.)
