Comments.

Two issues at hand today:

1) If you try to post a comment and it doesn’t appear, let me know. Several things could have happened — spam-filtering being the most obvious. Occasionally I delete comments because they’re really stupid, but that happens only rarely.

2) If you use HTML in your comments — which I allow — please check your tags before you publish. For want of a tag, a thread is lost, or at least screwed up.

That said, Laura, I think I deleted your comment. I thought de-spamming it would make it post, but I guess not. Then I deleted the whole spam file and pfft. Sorry.

Surely, none of my comments have ever been anything but insightful, right? Ha ha!

apropos of nothing in particular – last Wednesday I became a grandpa (next month Pammy & I will fly to GHW Bush Intercontinental airport in H-town, and visit our new grand daughter, and the new parents), and meanwhile the news has become all but unwatchable – with two sexually confused whack-jobs storming schools and specifically killing little girls in 10 days time.

Indeed, my emotions are all stirred up to begin with, and I’m gettin’ to be an old guy. Still, horror stories like the ones from Lancaster PA and Colorado just take me off my pins. How do the police deal with being exposed to atrcities like these? How on earth do the parents deal with this?

Do you mean dirty foul mouthed “really stupid” or insulting and mean “really stupid or just flat-out stupid? ‘Cause that’s not fair.

The ones I’ve deleted fall into two categories:

    1) Someone who so totally misunderstands the original post that their comment is nonsensical, or reads motives into it that simply don’t exist and then attacks the hallucination they’ve conjured. This doesn’t happen often.

    2) Someone who just chaps my ass. Again, not often.

WordPress informs me my comment count is over 9,000. I’ve probably deleted 10 or 12 in that time. (This doesn’t include spam, obviously; my filter claims it’s caught 7,697 spam comments so far, which is pretty depressing.)

Oh, and Brian — sorry, can’t help you there. The reporter on Nightline broke down and cried giving his report last night, which seems to be the appropriate response. ADDED: Oh, and congratulations, too. How old is the new baby’s auntie?

    Brian, congratulations!

Nancy, isn’t there a chapstick product for chapped asses? or for skinny folks, half-assed chapstick?

the title ‘grandpa’ is indeed an honorable one; I beat all my brothers to it. (and of course, our young folks think it’s enormously cool that they’re all aunties and uncles now!)

Say – this article made me laugh out loud… and indeed – if not for good ol’ NN.c, it would have meant nothing at all to me

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15116396/

    an excerpt –

Coach Inc. has accused department store operator Target Corp. of selling a fake Coach purse, making the high-end handbag maker the latest luxury company to go to court alleging trademark infringement. In a lawsuit filed in federal court in New York, Coach alleges that a Target store in Largo, Florida, was selling a counterfeit Coach purse marked with the Coach logo and sporting Coach tags.

Oh, and congratulations, too. How old is the new baby’s auntie?

Auntie Chloe is 2 years old; Auntie Shelby is 8; and Uncle Grant is 11 (and dad has had his number retired, if you get my drift)

The aunts and the uncle and I spent a golden day at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo Sunday – the day could not have been more perfectly beautiful (mom was in Indianapolis, scrapbooking – but I digress!) – and the big kitties were all up and moving (we especially like the often-overlooked leopard back in the African Veldt; the Veldt itself is closing down for a major refurbishment, and won’t be open at all next year) – and even the bobcats were pacing around in their area. We returned home with many good pics of animals and aunties and so on and so forth

Thanks, Ellen. Definitely go with XM, then. Which one has Howard Stern, Sirius? I defend his right to be who he is, but I won’t pay to hear him.

I sound like a walking commercial for XM, but it was one of the best gifts I’ve received in recent years. My husband scoffed at first — pay? for radio? — but four months later we had to go out and get him a receiver, too.

The other night I caught by chance a Miles Copeland show featuring Arab pop music that was just fantastic.

I consider myself very lucky I have KCRW as my local NPR station. Good music and news programming, but they stopped carrying Terry Gross. I can catch her on one of the other NPR stations, though. Nancy, you should listen to Chocolate City on KCRW online. The DJ, Garth Trinidad, plays some very good stuff, old and new. So do Nic Harcourt and Gary Kalamar.

I got Sirius just before Stern went there, immediately blocked his two channels and haven’t listened to them… but having five country channels, Elvis, Stones and Who channels and the BBC is nice.
