Elmore Leonard’s on “Detroit Today,” a local call-in show on WDET, promoting his new book, and jeeeeez, they just made him sit there while they replayed my essay about him.
(Pause. Razor poised over wrist.)
Hey, he said he liked it.
Well, now I’m awake. Back to work.

Cool, indeed! Put away the razor.
So, do I understand they played the whole thing and he had little else to say?
Is there a podcast so we can hear Leonard’s actual praise of nancy?

I dunno. It’s entirely possible he was just being polite. (Imagine any other reaction: “Boy, that really sucked.” Nah.) Amusing endnote: In giving my short-bio tagline, the announcer said I was a 2003 Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, which prompted the Man to ask, “When did she graduate again?” Evidently he now thinks I’m 25.

Let me just say as host of that program that Elmore Leonard LOVED your essay. He listened intently with a smile on his face. It was a great lead-in to the end of the interview.

Elmore loved it. Said you were a really good writer. He doesn’t say that unless he means it. I thought it was pretty great too.

Congratulations, Nancy.
Hey, can you do an essay on Steve Howe of Yes? I would like him to visit this blog so that I can stalk … er… chat with him.

Wow. Big gratz Nancy.
I can only imagine your embarassment when they played it… but it was a good essay. 🙂
Best.

Loved hearing you read your essay. You have a youthful voice… you sound like you’re 25 so I can understand Mr. Leonard’s confusion.

What Deborah said!
Detroit DOES sound like a great big wonderful town; I guess I’ll have to put a Leonard book into the on-deck circle

Hey, Brian, motorhead that you are –
If you want to add to your good time in Detroit, go August 1st – 5th, when the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club has its annual convention. OK, it’s actually headquartered in Pontiac, but close enough.
If you do, you’ll drown in some of the finest Italian automotive machinery, old and new. And, right in the birthplace of American automotive machinery. Incredible history, too. Without Alfa, there would be no Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati or Lamborghini.
I can’t make it this year, so I’ll live vicariously through you!

Good stuff! As it happens – looks like the week that works for the young folks and us to load up the family truckster and go someplace is at the end of June. We’re going to go to Harrisburg PA and visit Hershey and the Crayola factory…and Gettysburg (of course!)
But Big D remains very high on my list of Places We Shall Visit, for the Henry Ford stuff, and for the Underground Rail Road

Hershey. I have many fond memories of that place. They used to give tours of the chocolate factory (and probably still do) and I always liked the amusement park.

HA HA! Folks, if you haven’t, go over to Lance’s page and read his review of Nancy’s radio brush with greatness.
Very nicely done, Lance.
