I’m bugged by the negativity towards the new Ghostbusters movie. I saw last weekend and liked it. It had jokes, action-sequences, scary bits… everything you would want in an interesting movie.
I admit when I first heard that there was going to be a re-make of the movie I wasn’t interested. I’d seen the original and enjoyed it but I didn’t see any reason to re-make it. What new and interesting thing could they bring to it? What would make it worth seeing again? Well, woman ghostbusters! The minute I heard it would feature a female cast I thought this would be interesting. Because a women cast would have all-new jokes and gags, or at least there would be a new dimension to any of the old jokes. That would be reason enough to see it.
So I don’t understand the hostility of some males towards the movie. I can understand some kinds of hostility, like when Marvel charged The Mighty Thor into a woman after 50 years. Now they’re replacing Iron Man with a woman. If they want more women in their comics then create women characters. Just don’t piss on your fan. Movies differ from monthly comic books. Most are standalone properties or short serials. there’s no massive continuity to consider. If Iron Man had been a one-shot story then an Iron Woman story wouldn’t detract from that one-shot. A female Ghostbusters is hardly going to detract from another 30 year old movie. Thus the hostility towards the new movie is inexplicable only any grounds but raw misogyny, which is kind of sad. I wonder if this isn’t some blow-back from the Gamergate controversy where the complaint that video games are horrendously sexist lead to total-war against the woman making that complaint.
And the attacks on the black woman (Leslie Jones?)… In the original I thought the black guy had been shoehorned in for diversity but in the new movie “Patty” is well intergrated into the plot before she began a Ghostbuster and delivered some of the funniest lines in the movie. I can’t understand when men would be picking on her over the other actresses? Is it a race thing or a woman, I don’t get it.
I’ve read where rating on TV shows get dressed if it is perceived as a woman’s show. Apparently if men don’t like a show because it’s for girls they don’t just ignore it, they feel like they have to tear it down. God, I just don’t understand these people.
Anyway: Ghostbusters – a lot of fun. If you go see it sit through the credits to watch Chris Hemsford lead a mass of possessed soldiers through a Thriller like dance sequence.

Ben- we saw Ghostbusters last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s funny, the actors mesh well and it had some great effects. It was great hot summer night entertainment.
Tim Kaine is a good, solid, safe choice. I secretly hoped for Warren, but that was an emotional choice. Intellectually I know she is more effective in the Senate.
Market day looks lovely. We still have a few hot months to get through before those are fun events here.

Ghostbusters…When I saw it years ago on TV I thought it was just a silly children’s film. Over the years I have become amazed at the love that movie has garnered. From adults. I like adult theme movies and just blankly stared at Star Wars and Harry Potter and I flat-hated Avatar. I liked Star Trek on TV when reruns appeared in the early 1970s. The Star Trek movies …meh. Now I must say why I will mot watch the remake of Ghostbusters: I can’t stand Melissa McCarthy. She’s brash, but she just isn’t funny. I love women comedians like Rosie O’Donnell, Lisa Lampanelli, Sarah Silverman, Bridget Everett, Sandra Bernhart, Amy Schumer, Janeane Garafalo…many more. I just can’t stand Melissa McCarthy.
The host of a radio show I listen to daily is friends with Paul Feig and Paul invited that crew to witness a day of filming and production ; the remake was shot in New York using every trick in the book, green screens for every scene and they constructed a drop-dead replica of a NY subway station. It was quite overwhelming, we were told.
I meant to mention the last great movie TCM showed a few days ago: “A Soldier’s Ballad”. 1959, Russian, B&W…just 90 minutes long. It’s theme is antiwar, set on The Front , WWII, and on trains and fields as two young folks, one a Russian soldier on a well-earned 6-day leave, and a beautiful young woman who meet by happenstance, and the movie turns to a theme of unrequited true love and broken dreams and tragic endings to everything, thanks to war. It’s certaily not complicated and I thought after viewing it, I might find old reviews trashing it as simplistic mush , only to find it has become revered in Russia as a truly great Russian movie. The hero looks a lot like the young Sting, and the young woman looks like a goddess. Stunning movie, not dubbed, with sub-titles.
I read Geraldo Rivera and Chris Wallace are terribly upset about Ailes leaving. Were they hoping that one day they would catch his fancy, or have they already been caught?

Did anyone see the Clinton/Kaine rally in Miami? I thought it was a terrific event–a huge contrast with how Trump introduced Pence. Kaine was warm and humorous, with a natural speaking style, but also obviously smart, knowledgeable, and serious.
He took several solid whacks at Trump without sounding mean or hostile. Lots of enthusiasm from the crowd.
Also important, she gave one of her better performances. It’s clear they like and respect each other, and their comfort in each other’s presence made her seem warmer, more relaxed, more open.
They will have many tougher days, but this was a good start.
OK, I was a Bernie guy, because I believe Hillary is more and more of the status quo…and you guys know the differences between potential Sanders v. Clinton platforms, so no need to go back there.
Trump is recruiting Sanders voters in what I see as a lame attempt. I can’t imagine but only deranged Sanders backers flipping to The Donald.
So now Hillary enrages Sanders backers by picking Kaine. Well, when she says Kaine can take over as President if need be, on Day One, she’s right…if you believe in Clinton and her agenda, because Kaine is just like her.
Deregulation of Banks, check … Trade Promotion Authority…check— Now surely he was against the awful invasion into Iraq, right? Oh. No, he was a big supporter of that goddam fiasco . One thing I learned a few hours ago, he is also a proponent of imminent domain on the issue of unrestricted wind farms. Just another thing on which I disagree with him .
So, qualified, yeah, if you wanted a smooth transition, Kaine could slip perfectly into Hillary Clinton’s presidential boots.
Hey, did she pick him to pick up Latino votes? He can speak espanol like he was reared speaking it. I was wondering because I thought Clinton didn’t need to focus on Latino votes , as Trump lost all their support with his hate-speech about rapists and criminals and The Barrier Wall.

I laugh at anyone who wanted Biden but is unhappy at Kaine; Kaine is a better Biden. The Bernie dead-enders will have to figure out that they aren’t the base of the Democratic Party; they can either join the coalition, or they can go sulk while the rest of us try to save the world from Trump, but they don’t get to drive the bus.

Dexter, I’ve trying to find information on Kaine regarding wind power infrastructure as it connects that renewable energy source to the power grid, which it isn’t really set up for. What a complicated issue. On the one hand you’ve got promoting power that doesn’t promulgate climate change, so how do you do that in a pragmatic way in our capitalistic society? I would encourage keeping an open mind about those issues, look at the big picture, it’s extremely complicated.

It’s a ways out there… go maybe ten miles off the interstate, seven miles up a mountain to the gate, keep going up four or five more, then walk the last half mile to the top.
The best part of Kaine is that he seemed to bring out the best in Hillary in the same way Obama did when they held their rally together. I know campaigns always send the candidates out separately to cover more ground, but they should put them together as much as they can.

Trying to read up on Kaine at 4am (mountain time in Santa Fe) was challenging. I’m trying not to take knee jerk liberal positions on everything I read. I tried getting informed on the TPP but it was boring and arcane (financial stuff seems arcane to me). From my limited understanding of the TPP is seems off to me, but I know that Obama is for it and I respect him tremendously so I would like to learn more about it. Krugmann, another person I respect tremendously is wary of the TPP, so I’m flummoxed. Sound bites are misleading, and I’ve found if you look at who’s against something tells you a lot.

The TPP is hard to read up on, because we don’t yet know all the particulars about it. I dislike what I know about the Intellectual Property aspects of it, because it would strengthen the DMCA, which I find problematic, and DRM, which I find self-defeating, and change fair use standards.

The aquaponics project you can see a few posts down on that FB page actually began in September as an Eagle service project by the oldest of the crew being recognized today, and three more Eagle projects were done out at the Land Lab (seating and teaching platforms, bridges and paths build & established, and a general access area and signage), for five Eagles in total this year helping Mr. Reding make the GSSP go. *Nine* young men from the Class of 2016 are getting their Eagles awarded this afternoon, something I’ve never seen before and expect never to see again, and they were completed across the last ten-plus months, but they’ve all waited to do their recognition together — because that’s how they got through the rank, the project, the Philmont trek (90+ miles in ten days), Boundary Waters (100+ miles & 8 portages), spring musicals (most all of them have had leads in one of the last six shows over the last two years), and their college applications & auditions.
They are doing one last thing together before they all disperse in a couple of weeks, and yes, I’m crying a bit just typing that. But what a way to close out high school!

I don’t get the outrage over the DNC’s attitude about Sanders, when Sanders isn’t even a member of the party. Sanders complicated making it a slam dunk getting a Democrat elected, of course the DNC wouldn’t be crazy about that. Sanders stirred up a lot of hard feelings. Did he push Hillary into being more progressive? Hard to say, in my opinion.

Yes, imagine the DNC being annoyed about a campaign that filed a lawsuit against them! The grandstanding about wanting DWS to step down is ridiculous, too; her duties as chair are already basically over. Day to day operations were handed over to a Hillary person once she clinched the nomination, and a Hillary choice will likely be chosen after the election if Hillary wins, because the sitting President is the head of the party. If DWS was partial to Hillary, it was because Obama wanted Hillary; she wasn’t going to go against him.
Sanders real problem is with Obama, but that’s not news; Sanders called for a primary challenge to Obama in 2012 (though he wasn’t willing to put himself on the line.)

Just got home, heard Donna Brazile is being made interim head of the DNC. Between that and the Kaine pick, I think there’s no open path for Trump against Clinton. Relax and enjoy the convention, folks; DWS was walking dead anyhow, even before this oddly-released set of e-mails.
I just don’t think America will let IS/ISIS/ISIL/Daesh set the terms for the election. They’re gonna try to scare us into voting for a strong goober (as Putin is apparently also trying to do), but I just don’t think authoritarianism of any stripe has a 40+% future in this country.

The aquaponics project you can see a few posts down on that FB page actually began in September as an Eagle service project by the oldest of the crew being recognized today, and three more Eagle projects were done out at the Land Lab (seating and teaching platforms, bridges and paths build & established, and a general access area and signage), for five Eagles in total this year helping Mr. Reding make the GSSP go. *Nine* young men from the Class of 2016 are getting their Eagles awarded this afternoon, something I’ve never seen before and expect never to see again, and they were completed across the last ten-plus months, but they’ve all waited to do their recognition together — because that’s how they got through the rank, the project, the Philmont trek (90+ miles in ten days), Boundary Waters (100+ miles & 8 portages), spring musicals (most all of them have had leads in one of the last six shows over the last two years), and their college applications & auditions.
They are doing one last thing together before they all disperse in a couple of weeks, and yes, I’m crying a bit just typing that. But what a way to close out high school!

I don’t get the outrage over the DNC’s attitude about Sanders, when Sanders isn’t even a member of the party. Sanders complicated making it a slam dunk getting a Democrat elected, of course the DNC wouldn’t be crazy about that. Sanders stirred up a lot of hard feelings. Did he push Hillary into being more progressive? Hard to say, in my opinion.

Yes, imagine the DNC being annoyed about a campaign that filed a lawsuit against them! The grandstanding about wanting DWS to step down is ridiculous, too; her duties as chair are already basically over. Day to day operations were handed over to a Hillary person once she clinched the nomination, and a Hillary choice will likely be chosen after the election if Hillary wins, because the sitting President is the head of the party. If DWS was partial to Hillary, it was because Obama wanted Hillary; she wasn’t going to go against him.
Sanders real problem is with Obama, but that’s not news; Sanders called for a primary challenge to Obama in 2012 (though he wasn’t willing to put himself on the line.)

Just got home, heard Donna Brazile is being made interim head of the DNC. Between that and the Kaine pick, I think there’s no open path for Trump against Clinton. Relax and enjoy the convention, folks; DWS was walking dead anyhow, even before this oddly-released set of e-mails.
I just don’t think America will let IS/ISIS/ISIL/Daesh set the terms for the election. They’re gonna try to scare us into voting for a strong goober (as Putin is apparently also trying to do), but I just don’t think authoritarianism of any stripe has a 40+% future in this country.
