My Scarlett O’Hara face is not exactly firm right now. There are moments of groaning and pulling covers over my head. Like when I read something like this:
President-elect Donald Trump on Monday told a group of about 25 television executives and anchors that he wants a “cordial” and “productive” relationship with the media, according to one source in the room, but he still aired some grievances during the off-the-record gathering in Trump Tower.
The source said the meeting started with a typical Trump complaint about the “dishonest media,” and that he specifically singled out CNN and NBC News for example as “the worst.”
He also complained about photos of himself that NBC used that he found unflattering, the source said.
Trump turned to NBC News President Deborah Turness at one point, the source said, and told her the network won’t run a nice picture of him, instead choosing “this picture of me,” as he made a face with a double chin. Turness replied that they had a “very nice” picture of him on their website at the moment.
An infant. A child. Holy shit.
I have a big staff meeting tomorrow and don’t really feel like writing anything other than my end-of-year self-evaluation. Also, I have to see what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches toward Bethlehem to be born.
Later!

And, still, an unabashed conman and grifter.
At some wifi pub on a dingy sidestreet of Valhalla the three revenants dressed in worn blue sitting in the corner booth pause over their whiskey as they overhear the Valkyries at the next table over – who have just opened their Æsirnet connection – swear and exclaim something about “…already working on becoming the most fucking corrupt presidential administration in American history”.
Bill Sherman guffaws and slaps the dusty little man sitting beside him as Phil Sheridan raises his glass to his friend. Ulysses Grant simply takes a long pull on his stogie and slouches back with a sour little knowing smirk that says everything you need to know about his opinion of the coming corruption of the 45th President of the United States.

It’s a funny world when the people who bleat the most about personal responsibility don’t want to talk about words or deeds, but only what’s in their heart. It’s their intent that matters.
Your intent, on the other hand, is irrelevant. You must take responsibility for your actions.

The normalization of white supremacists reminds me very much of the normalization of the religious right under Ronald Reagan. I remember getting into a heated argument with a leftist sociology prof in the ’80s who said the religious right had a valid claim that their way of life was being taken away from them and society was ignoring their concerns and not giving them a place at the table; I argued back that they want to take our way of life away from us rather than just peacefully coexist. This discussion took place after some lunatic pastor from the Indianapolis Baptist Temple had come to IU to give a lecture about homosexuality being a Chinese communist plot to depopulate the U.S. so they could take us over. By some sort of dark magic the Chinese were going to make everyone homosexual and weak and sissified and our armies would be powerless to fend off their troops because our troops would be too busy fornicating with each other to care. I was astounded that anyone peddling such silliness, much less hatred, would be given a podium at a university and treated the same as if he were a scholar.
Trump throwing tantrums because he doesn’t like his picture. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad. I hope those media execs and journalists came away from that meeting with a greater understanding of where that fool’s goat is tied and the resolve to untie it.

http://wane.com/2016/11/21/dealers-using-thc-laced-edibles-to-attract-young-people/
a (fairly poorly written) excerpt:
Several students at West Noble High School were caught trying to deal lollipops laced with THC. The small suckers could pack a big punch. Typically, edibles can contain anywhere between 70 and 100 percent of THC. Marijuana has just 17 to 30 percent.

Here’s what WaPo had to say on not pressing charges against Clinton: “Trump’s apparent decision, conveyed by campaign manager Kellyanne Conway in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” would be an extraordinary break with political and legal protocol, which holds that the attorney general and FBI make decisions on whether to conduct investigations and file charges, free of pressure from the president.”
I went to a Town Hall meeting with my state reps last night. We lost control of the house and sentate in MN, but our gov is Democratic. Our Dem reps stated that we can expect to see many of the same laws put forward in other states: vouchers in schools, religious freedom (actually bigotry) protections, and pro-pipeline actions. They will also likely try to dismantle efforts to promote solar power. Democrats tend to stay home in non-Presidential years, so GOTV will be critical in 2018, when we will elect a new governor. The current governor, Dayton, is not running again.
I also learned that my US House rep, Keith Ellison, worked hard to increase voter participation in my district; since 2004 he doubled it. There was a lot of support in the room for his taking the leadership of the DNC.

This article reads like a second-rate political satire
http://money.cnn.com/2016/11/22/media/trump-new-york-times-meeting/index.html?adkey=bn
an excerpt:
“Mr. Trump’s staff has told us that the President Elect’s meeting with The [New York] Times is on again,” Eileen Murphy, head of communications for the Times, said in a statement. “He will meet with our publisher off-the-record and that session will be followed by an on-the-record meeting with our journalists and editorial columnists.”
The back-and-forth showed Trump’s impulsive nature and his combative approach toward top news organizations.
and
Here’s what happened:
Trump originally asked for the meeting with Times executives, and also agreed to meet on the record with reporters and columnists. The Times announced the meeting on Monday.
But on Tuesday morning, Trump said on Twitter that the “terms and conditions” had changed at the last minute — a claim The Times denied, saying it was in fact Trump who had tried to alter the conditions.
“Not nice,” Trump said in an early morning tweet. He called the newspaper “failing,” a favorite insult. In a second tweet minutes later, the president-elect said: “Perhaps a new meeting will be set up with the @nytimes. In the meantime they continue to cover me inaccurately and with a nasty tone!”

Here he and an assistant manhandle the swans into barges to move them to their winter quarters. There is a prophecy about the swans of Hamburg (sort of like the ravens in the Tower) and that the city’s wellbeing depends on there always being swans on the Alster Lake. Swans are such big aggressive beasts, I admire the way he slings them around.

Thanks for asking, Jolene. I’m hanging in there. My Oncologist can’t believe me. She expected me to die back in 2014 but after three years, three surgeries and Lord knows how much chemotherapy, (more tomorrow), I’m still here. I had a period during October during which I was pretty sick but they adjusted my meds and I feel very good right now. My wonderful Ex, the lovely T, has been so good to me. She’s a life saver. When I got sick, she was the first one there.
Jeff B, forget the Canadian stuff when you go to Spain. They can spot an American a block away. You’ll see what I mean after a few days. Just be yourself. Spain is a great country. I’ve never felt threatened, concerned, worried or anything else but safe and happy and I’ve been all over Barcelona and Madrid and several other cities– and I’m a 72 year old man with cancer. Elevators are everywhere even Metro stations. Prices are reasonable, food and drink are excellent, the streets are full of life and people. Spain is a walking country. Strap on your walkers and hoof it. Or take the bus. I’ve learned to take the bus all over town. You can get multi ride tickets at any Metro station. The machines are all in Spanish and can be a bit confusing. I just stand there and look stupid (comes naturally for me) and someone always comes up to help. It’s that kind of place.
For money, stay away from the cambios and use the ATM. They’re all over the place and they have screens in English. If you have a problem or question, go inside the bank. They’ll be pleased to help you. Just remember to call your ATM and credit card providers to inform them that you will be in Spain and of the dates you’ll be there. Otherwise, they’ll lock your card the first time you try to use it.
Get several maps and guide books and look them over before you go. Some maps are good and some are crap. You’ll see. For major museums and tourist attractions have the hotel desk get you tickets in advance. You can get them on line before you go if you know dates, etc. Walk and take the bus. I don’t use the Metro because, while it’s clean and safe and on time (as is the bus), it’s underground and I can’t see a thing. The reason I’m there is to see stuff so it’s the bus for me. Also the taxi. They’re cheap. You can’t really get lost. If you misplace yourself or find yourself pooped, simply hail a cab and show the driver the hotel business card you picked up at the desk. He’ll take you home.
Smile, be polite, say “please” and “thank you”. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Spanish (I don’t to my shame). You’ll work things out. Open your mind, go with the flow and you’ll have the time of your life. I know you’ll love Spain. I do.

I mean, God put those things in your body so how dare some doctor say you didn’t need them?!? And why did he have to fill out paperwork for his insurance company about how his disability left him unable to work? Problem is, see, that those big city insurance claims people don’t understand what a farmer does because if they did, he wouldn’t have to fill out all this crap.

Last year, during the mayoral and city council elections here, I heard a lot of complaints that the part of town I lived in was not being represented and not being heard. That was risible, of course, because I live in the most politically active part of the city, and the mayor and half the city council live in this part of the city. What they meant was, they’re not privileging me as much I think I deserve, because I’ve lived here so long/paid so much for my house/whatever.
I hear the same complaint from rural America. Rural America has a disproportionate amount of power in our government, and gets a disproportionate amount of resources. I don’t deny they have problems that should be addressed, but the idea that rural America is somehow ignored is stupid.

Is anybody else beset by the notion that thanksgiving celebration is not unlike confederate flagwaving (nothing to do with racism/colonialism! it’s about gratitude! it’s about FAMILY, for Chissakes!)

Especially when you consider the way law enforcement is handling a peaceful protest at Standing Rock? Yeah, Thanksgiving is a little on the nose this year.

kathy t., I’ll take your bait. I completely disagree that Confederate flagwaving has nothing to do with racism. It is the symbol of a group of people who fought like hell to keep black people enslaved. I don’t think you can get more racist than that.
David C., you beat me to that news. Also, one of the Trump advisors is wanting to defund climate change research by NASA. I’m so angry with everybody who didn’t vote, voted for Trump, or voted third party right now. I’m showing a lot of restriant by not swearin’ up a storm.

Judybusy, I think you’ve got kathy t turned around. Or else I’m understanding her the other way.
To me it’s always been a celebration of the harvest. No pilgrim decorations in my house. Plus I harvested 4 pounds of carrots yesterday and will be forcing people to eat them, so happy times.

I know what you mean about being angry at anyone who didn’t vote, or in my case, cast a vanity vote. Yesterday, I was at the library and saw a Jill Stein bumper sticker on a car. I beat a hasty retreat because I was afraid I’d say something I’d regret (a bit). Not allowing NASA to do climate science is a disgrace. If the ocean swallows Mar-a-Lago and the rest of Florida, well tough shit.

The GOP already prevents research on gun death. Newt Gingrich got rid of the nonpartisan Office of Technology Assessment, which provided Congress with info on science and tech matters.
The only expertise the GOP cares about is the bought and paid for kind, from lobbyists. Trump’s going to extend the period before administration members can become lobbyists, so people will talk about “drain the swamp!” I’d bet hard cash money there will be an end-around that restriction, though, like a relaxing of the limits on what you can do before you have to register as a lobbyist.

Probably ten years ago, I told another board member on the schools foundation we were on at the time that I thought there was an intentional movement to destroy public education in this country. She thought I was exaggerating. Our kids are now out of public schools, and I don’t run into her that much, but I wonder what she thinks now?
That some Dems and liberals have cooperated in this process is both a disgrace and a warning about cooperation with Trump schemes.

Right, Judybusy, my last little bit was sarcasm or an attempt to draw a parallel between the justifications given for confederate flagwaving and thanksgiving rahrah. because it’s kind of the same process, although the confederacy is a little closer to the present day. probably did not make that clear in my attempt to be brief and to the point.

2016 xmas Carol (draft)
Oh Holy Shit
Oh holy shit! The rubes are greatly crapping,
on remains of our dear Nation’s soul.
Long will the world, in angst see us fapping,
‘Till we know that reason be our goal.
No thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
In America’s broken glorious days.
Fall on your knees, oh, hear the idiot voices!
Oh, Trump descends, oh, right, in Trumpian blaze
Oh, Trump descends, oh Trump descends.
Led by the light of gilt, serenely beaming,
With glowing rage by his hairpiece we stand.
Led by the light of an Orange truly scheming,
Here come the white men from racist land.
The Trump of Trump lay high in his lair;
In all his tweets, forever be our turd.
He knows our weakness; to our needs, not a care
Behold your Trump! Before him, lowly herd!
Behold your Trump! Before him, lowly herd!
Truly he taught us to hate our brother;
His law is greed and his truth is lies.
Chains shall he wave, we are slaves to one another;
And in his name, oppression shall reach new highs.
Savage hymns of scorn in hateful chorus we scream
Let all within us curse his wretched name.
Trump is our hell. O curse his name forever.
His power and office, going down in shame.
His power and office, going down in shame.

Trump seems to be filling his cabinet with the evilest people he can find. God, what a fucking disaster he is.

Today I was behind a car that had these three bumper stickers–1) a confederate flag 2) one that said something like “Keep working because you have to pay for the 10,000,000 illegals who are too lazy to work” 3) one that said “Welcome to such & such Covenant Christian Church!” And then some other stuff about Jesus.
So Blazing Saddles except it’s not satire.
And if you want a stomach churning experience, Google “illegal immigrant” bumper stickers.

Yes, I see so many Mexicans sleeping in the town square under their sombreros and serapes. Oh wait, no. I see them in restaurants, hotels, doing yard work, and generally doing back breaking work, likely paying taxes, and not eligible for most benefits we take for granted. I get those two mixed up.

I think it was Suzanne, maybe Susan who commented here about people she observed wanting life to be simple. After everything I’ve been reading lately about the election, I’m thinking you guys were dead on. again, I’ll comment about this more in the future. I think you guys recognized it way before me and my kind did in our bubble. I wished we’d have listened to you guys earlier, maybe we would have learned something. There seems to be a huge dichotomy between the two Americas, duh. I don’t even know how or where to talk about this. You guys who live in red America are way closer to it than I am. Please elaborate.
