Rainbow connection.

City life: I took the dog for a walk close to 7 p.m., and even though it wasn’t raining here at all, there was a pretty grand rainbow in the east, which we enjoyed until it disappeared. For a while it was doubled. Very nice.

A while later Alan pulled into the driveway.

“See the rainbow?” I asked.

“Yes. And I think someone on I-94 saw it, because he’d run his car up the embankment and rolled back down. He was standing outside smoking a cigarette, and grocery bags full of his crap were all over.”

Just another Monday evening. An exhausting one, for me — slept badly and had a series of frustrating blah-blahs, but oh well. A couple squares of dark chocolate and a glass of wine should do it.

So, a little bloggage?

Your daily presidential embarrassment, via Haberman at the NYT:

In the span of 72 hours, President Trump described the email hacking that roiled the 2016 campaign as a Democratic “hoax” and as clear aggression by Russia that his predecessor, President Barack Obama, failed to address.

Other times, Mr. Trump has said the hacking might have been done by China.

Or, as he claimed during the first general election debate, the hacking could have been the work of a lone wolf weighing 400 pounds, sitting on his bed at home.

Then there was the time Mr. Trump blamed “some guy in his home in New Jersey.”

Or, as Mr. Trump has also suggested, there might not even have been hacking at all…

Twenty-two million more uninsured. MAGA, mofos.

I think I need to see “Wonder Woman” or something. Happy Tuesday to all.

Wonder Woman is good. You should see it.

In the meantime, I posted this on the end of the last thread, before I realized there was a new one. It’s a video of us receiving our award: https://goo.gl/photos/VGfTSN57D7xTzFwR7

It’s not Wonder Woman, but it’s not trump, either.

We’re becoming Sparta. It’s time for the old, the weak, the disabled, the ill, the infirm and, most of all, the poor to just fucking die and get out of the way. If McConnell and Ryan had their way, we’d all be left up on a mountain where nature would take its course.

I do have a question, though, particularly in light of how vehemently plutocrats like the Koch Brothers. Sheldon Adelson, the DeVos family, the Scaifes, etc. want to grind us under their heels. Who the fuck will buy their goods? Henry Ford paid his workers a staggering $5 per hour because he thought they might use that money to buy his cars. Why do so many of these capitalists want to see their market decimated by bankruptcy when medical costs rise so high? Who do they think is going to buy their shit when we’re all underwater financially? I truly don’t understand their logic. Or, perhaps, they’re just psychopaths? And my god, they have an entire political party that is almost their equal in cruelty. I despise the Republican Party. It is unAmerican.

Well, since I don’t understand anything about the award or what went into winning it, you could just as well be Wonder Woman, as far as I’m concerned. Swell video and congratulations, Sherri!

Also from previous thread: Grover freaking Norquist has an 8-year old that he hasn’t explained the horrors of the American tax system to, yet? Sad! But that’s not “how Republicans are born.” They’re born when goofuses like Grover freaking Norquist find women willing to procreate with them and they become Republicans only when the indoctrination into fact-averse orthodoxy by the right-wing bullshit-industrial-complex is spilled down onto another generation. Uh, IMHO.

Spent a long afternoon and evening here in east central Ohio trying to figure out how to deliver crisis services in SUD/MH settings with both the Medicaid managed care regime coming on-line in this state over the next few months, let alone what the AHCA will do to our efforts to respond to the opiate epidemic and to increased need for family therapy in general. Few answers are obvious, but we’re going to get more group processes and increased amounts of tele-medicine and therapeutic interventions. BH/MH systems in this state are looking at extensions of the coding deadlines to October or year’s end, but the funding and reimbursement is getting gamed to a frustrating and unproductive degree.

Danny, there were over 20 Turing laureates there. Some seriously impressive people in the room. There was a whole conference and celebration around 50 years of the Turing Award. Knuth is definitely first among equals, though.

The funniest thing, though, was watching all these distinguished and celebrated computer scientists be repeatedly flustered by, of all things, the elevator in the hotel. The elevators are of the new style where you type in your destination floor outside, insert your room key, and you are directed to the correct elevator, and inside there are no buttons for floors. This software-driven system was very confusing to our computer luminaries.

I very politely never laughed out loud at their struggles, not even (especially not!) my husband’s.

McConnell says his T4 program will work with greater efficiency than its predecessor, using market driven forces instead of Zyklon B.*

The “euthanasia” program required the cooperation of many German doctors, who reviewed the medical files of patients in institutions to determine which handicapped or mentally ill individuals should be killed. The doctors also supervised the actual killings. Doomed patients were transferred to six institutions in Germany and Austria, where they were killed in specially constructed gas chambers. Handicapped infants and small children were also killed by injection with a deadly dose of drugs or by starvation. The bodies of the victims were burned in large ovens called crematoria.

Despite public protests in 1941, the Nazi leadership continued this program in secret throughout the war. About 200,000 handicapped people were murdered between 1940 and 1945.

The T-4 program became the model for the mass murder of Jews, Roma (Gypsies), and others in camps equipped with gas chambers that the Nazis would open in 1941 and 1942. The program also served as a training ground for SS members who manned these camps.

*The Zyklon B will be reintroduced gradually. Like Eric Trump’s Fashy Haircut.

Seven minutes patient contact are allowed, in which they are to greet the patient in a gracious and welcoming manner, administer a five minute treatment, assist them to the bathroom and back, and inquire if they have any other needs. And hurry up, hurry up, hurry up. But patient surveys show they want you to not express you’re in a hurry, so make sure you’re very friendly and engage in conversation. See any problems with the math there?

She grabs a yogurt on the run and often doesn’t have time for even a bathroom break during her shift. Her stress level is off the charts, and her own health has deteriorated. You couldn’t pay me to check in there.

Dorothy, I’m glad the procedure went well!

I am pessimistic about the health care plan. They will get the votes, and Trump will sign off. Many people will die or live substandard lives. You’d think they’d want a healthy workforce. As it is, we’ll be facing worker shortages in some areas. Combined with immigration restriction, I think more companies will begin to look outside the US to get the work done. Did I read it here that Hawaii is looking into a Universal Basic Income? Or maybe it was on Pod Save the People.

My wife and I were so bored during Wonder Woman. Part of it was I’m just not that into comic-book stuff, but it was getting such great reviews, and with a strong female lead. Headed to the corner, and I’ll bring chocolate. Who’s on wine?

So excited for today–we’re going to see Lisa Fischer yet again. We’re sitting with another couple and a third will also be attending, but at a different table at the jazz club. But first, I gotta get through work and a borad meeting at Clare Housing. The ED, along with other leaders in the HIV world met with Ben Freakin’ Carson to explain to him why housing is so important. I’ll share details tomorrow. One very positive thing: our Republican reps, both state and national, are typically open to meeting with our ED and supporting our goals.

I will say this for Wonder Woman; unlike the vast majority of the other comic book movies, this one actually has a story, develops characters, and while having a degree of violence, doesn’t spend the entire movie blowing shit up and in particular, engaging in needless collateral damage. Most comic book movies destroy entire cities full of people just as s side effect of the epic battle between the good guy and the bad guy, who must, it seems, hold their ultimate battle somewhere where there are lots of innocent people to kill not because the evil guy is evil, but because that’s where they fight. The Marvel movies are basically a series of one-liners interspersed with explosions, and Wonder Woman was definitely not that. Was it the best movie I ever saw? No, but I gave up on comic book movies after The Avengers and seeing that Joss Whedon didn’t do anything more than follow the formula, albeit with wittier quips.

Sure, I’m grading on a curve, and obviously in this forum, I’m the one standing over in the corner, but that’s okay. To paraphrase Calvin Trillin’s daughter, it was better than a trump.

Yeah, it took me awhile, but I realized I’ve pretty much aged out of the comic book / space fantasy movie-going demographic. (Well, probably more than a decade ago, but I’m a little slow on the uptake…)

We used to see Spider-Man and Superman and Batman, but sheesh, how many “reboots” do there need to be, anyway? Haven’t been on board for the last several. And these days there are so many comic book heroes I’ve never even heard of that I couldn’t begin to keep up, even if I wanted to.

But I heard great stuff about “Guardians of the Galaxy,” so we gave that a shot when it showed up on TV. It was fun and was written with a nice tongue-in-cheek vibe, which we enjoyed, but, at the end of the day, it’s largely a bunch of CGI space-fighters flying around shooting each other, in a way that I had no idea what was going on. So, uh no GotG 2 for us, alas. Hey, I watched all the Star Wars and Star Trek movies, up until the last couple years, but was never a devotee of all the mythology and hero-worship, and the action sequences really start to get boring, as Julie notes.

So, if there’s room in the corner for a guy, I’ll join in. But I’m bringing beer! ; )

I didn’t think it was the massive feminist film some reviewers thought it was, but on second thought, a movie about a woman who is a well-developed character that emphasizes her abilities to live without men…hmmm, maybe that is pretty radical. And while Gal Gadot is gorgeous, there weren’t too many of the kind of gratuitous body shots we’ve come to expect. If anything the focus was on her athleticism.

I will be seeing the latest Wolverine movie, probably when it comes out on On Demand because part of it was filmed in Abiquiu, near where some of our friends live and we saw the set they built for it. Cowboys and Aliens was also filmed in Abiquiu, in a gorgeous locale called The White Place, or Plaza Blanca. It has tall white hoodoos that you can hike around, it’s magical on a full moonlit night. Anyway it wasn’t the kind of movie I’d normally see, but it was fun to see Abiquiu on film while we were in Chicago. Lots of other movies have been filmed in Abiquiu, mostly westerns for obvious reasons.

I’m still in Abiquiu and won’t be able to watch Sherri’s video until I’m back in Santa Fe because internet service doesn’t work well enough to get videos here. Oops, I posted this on the previous thread. I had a very upsetting experience today. I decided to go for a walk around 4 in a nature area near where I work. It’s right next to a creek. I was walking and I saw a sort of whirlpool or disturbance in the water–I thought maybe the town had put in some sort of aerating feature or something. I got closer and realized it was a struggling duck, wings flapping frantically, obviously stuck on something. There was no one around and I didn’t know what to do. I actually waded into the water to try to get it, but it was very sticky and mucky and my feet sank fast, so I wasn’t able to get out there. I’m afraid that made the duck even more frantic. I climbed back on to the riverbank to try to call the police but the duck went under. Who knows how long it had been struggling. I wish I could have saved it. I hate seeing animals in distress.

I worked at Lutheran for two years. Loved my job and the people I worked with. We were not in patient care. But morale hospital wide wasn’t so great. Employees got a little cynical knowing that Lutheran Health was worth more than all of CHS, and that they were, in effect, the cash cow. At one point, they were making MORE budget cuts. We were not allowed to make color copies. They pay less than Parkview (where I also worked for a time) and don’t treat their employees as well as Parkview. We got quarterly bonuses there.
Now I am working for another not for profit hospital, and love it. Well paid and appreciated staff are a good step in making sure there is quality patient care.

I don’t know about golddiggers so much, but I had a great aunt who, after she became a widow, was still driving around in a car that had seen better days. She was a favorite of my dad and dad’s brother, and my uncle told her she should just go and buy a new car. She had a million dollars altogether, she and my great uncle had lived frugally all their lives, frugal might be a kind way of putting it, but she decided to buy that car so she and my uncle went and bought a brand new Ford.

Oh, she had two daughters and a son, the son didn’t care so much but the daughters were so mad at their cousin, being my uncle. He was helping their mother spend the inheritance.

Today, the two daughters have that money split between them, the son is since deceased.

Is Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne still run by the Lutherans? Lutheran Hospital in Chicago isn’t, it’s part of the Advocate health conglomerate. They still keep the original names of all the hospitals they acquired because people still associate that with them. So for instance they call it Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. I thought the Lutherans pretty much divested themselves from stuff like that?

I designed new Hospital signage for the Advocate system before I retired. It ended up getting cheaped out though so it doesn’t look so good. And other people carried out getting it programmed and fabricated. Always a designers excuse.

No, Lutheran Hospital isn’t Lutheran any more. It was sold about 15 years ago, the proceeds of which fund grants given by the Lutheran Foundation. I think it’s on its second or third owner by now. I feel terrible for the employees. It must be hell to work there at this point.
